I lived there for fifteen years and could never figure that one out.
Just answer me this; Are Bostonians rude because they are incompetent or incompetent because they are rude?

I lived in Boston for 4 years - regrettably. I left because of the constant rudeness. I love the way the locals just stare you down with those little beady eyes of theirs. I think they are just very angry due to the lousy drivers and the weather personally. I always said that New England is too good for the locals. I just laugh now... Oh, and the insurance I pay now is like 70% less... not worth living there. Trust me! Run away from those people!

They're rude, for sure. They've just started to figure out being rude is bad for business, took them quite a while for that, they have politeness training, which doesn't always work, hard to break a lifetime habit of being a sphincter.

and rudeness has nothing to do with being tough, I find the numerous social amenities out here makes people soft, people from the south, or the midwest are really far tougher, mentally and physically.

Don't you know that generalizations unless your talking science with proven results are generally inferior to real truth.
You unhappy people commenting here who believe this are probably projecting your own sadness in not being able to relate to people in meaningful ways. Try being non judgemental about others due to your inadequate personalities. Try not to let your ignorance dominate your intellectual capacity.
Maybe you can begin by looking in the mirror and corecting your own problems first.

Bostonians have kind of a superiority complex in beleif that Boston in is the center of the universe and because of Hahhvad and MIT we think we are wicked smahht and betta then any one else cause non Bostonians are retahhdid. Thus we have pride in our rudeness.

I have always lived in Boston. Unlike nearly every American city, it was settled before the fancy pants with silly wigs crashed the party.

So, I think it wouldn't take much time after class to connect the dots between Paul Revere's exposed head of melanin and today's Boston. To help you see the picture clearly, I'm not going to distort the claim that Bostonians may seem rude to outsiders. The reactions in this forum are right-on, but they're clearly facile and reflexive, so I'm grading what I've seen so far with a big red Incomplete.

I feel that the people of my hometown may be better characterized as reluctant to disguise a terse participation in social business & discourse with facades of endemic politeness and tourist appeal. Rather than doing what's commonplace, the commonwealth hosts what many consider the nation's most liberal and inclusive newspaper. The Boston Globe is a daily collection of opinions put front-upright-and-center so that, without much hesitation before the pitch, it's hard to miss the bull's eyes peering out from the state that falls right behind Japan, China and Singapore on standardized math tests. So it's evident that these Improper Bostonians do not just shine at HAHVAHD and MIT. There's a tough Yankee attitude that won't soon leave, so however I went to public school with outdated textbooks and 18-wheelers for classrooms, I also worked every year since I legally could to pay for college. Clearly this is an industrial place with an awfully high cost-of-living, so please excuse us if we forget a few pleasantries when you cross the border from Connecticut. So in all, you're very welcome for our wherewithal through the years very well in advance. Now stop whining.

Also, please take a moment to reflect on those fancy pants in silly wigs who, in a modern semblance, maintain class oppression in our societies, so my casual observation turns to wonder over why previous writers didn't begin to compare Boston with what the rest of the country is doing. Have you read the Patriot Act lately? Nice shooting, Tex! Or should I congratulate Dicky? I'm not really sure because they're both suspect.

Is any of this really news to you? I would guess not, but if the Aussie Murdoch (AKA Doctor Claw) has his way with our Boston Globe, I might want to disqualify similar assumptions and surrender other Yankees into dancing the Fox trot with the rest of the third world. We have a problem with that Houston, so whether you like or it not, what makes Boston rude is not changing. So get more used to it and please learn to love it... you may find a little more Brahmin in you than expected.

Really? When I visit Boston for Anime Boston, no one is rude. People I see are pretty nice. Sure there are some snide comments made to my fellow Anime Fans, but we ignore it.
