I'm a veteran who spent 18 months at Fort Slocum in the early 60's. I'm trying to find anyone in New Rochelle that has some names of people that worked or lived there in the 1960's. Another vet recently contacted me to find out how we could find someone that remembered names of either military or civilians that were there between 1960 and 1965, when it closed.

I went to school at Blessed Sacrament with the Castellanos,(Col) LaRocca(Major). They would take the ferry and the bus up to school. If you go on Ancestry.com you can look up names on the Census.
My cousin married a GI stationed there in the 50's.

Hey Coleen
I remember Cynthia but can't remember the first name of the other girl - I think she had blonde hair.

My sister, Pat Teague Harrell, worked at Fort Slocum. She met her husband, Bill Harrell, there.

My Dad was stationed there in the late 40's, met my mother in New Rochelle, and they were married in the Chapel on the island.
There are a few gentlemen working on the records from Fort Slocum, and if you google it, their sites will come up. You can also contact Barbara Davis, and the New Rochelle Library to find more information and get contact emails.

My dad was an MP there in the late 40's and transported the Military criminals during that time. I will try to put you in touch with some of those that are coordinating Fort Slocum history.

Donna LaRocca & I shared an apartment at one time. Her father was such a gentleman. Anyone know what happened to them?

I was there during the time that Col. Nealon and family were there.(1961-63) He was Deputy Post Commander.
I was in the Headquarters Co. 1207 Garrison, where all the cooks, MP's, boat crew, medics, and other personnel were.
I am in contact with others from the Information School as well.

I have found a DVD copy of the movie about the schools at Fort Slocum on Amazon.com taken by the Army Pictorial Service in early 1961 or '62.
Please contact me for more information.

If anybody is interested, there is a new (2008) DVD copy of a 30 minute movie made by the Army in the early 1960's, about Fort Slocum, available from Amazon.com for $14.95 plus postage.
If you live in the New Rochelle area, call Barbara Davis at the Library next week and you can probably look at her copy, which I donated recently.

We have a Facebook website called "Fort Slocum Friends" with photos from the earlier days and the 2007 and '08 visits.
FYI, Don Nealon, son of Lt. Col. Nealon died at age 60 on July 1, 2009. He was a teenager in the early 1960's.

There is talk of a ceremony on Nov. 11, 2009 at Glen Island to honor the veterans that were at Fort Slocum. I will add details when they become available.

Daily Horoscope for December 23

Aries

Don't get embroiled in a bad-tempered skirmish today, for it might turn into more than that if you aren't careful. Everyone seems to be ratty and argumentative, but once you let the first spat take place it's effectively declaring open season. Even though things seem out-of-joint, keep your lines of communication open.
