I am one of the Board Directors and would be willing to sit with you and discuss your concerns and bring them to the security Committe to fix .

I agree with Ex Bx. Its the people who make the community. And someone needs to tell that Frank Belcher dude to shut the F*#k up with all his complaining about nonsense. There are REAL problems in co op that need to be adressed and it has nothing to do with ex felons or mold. Co op City is nothing but a glorified over-priced housing project now. I moved in 2 years ago and I cannot WAIT to get out! I made the mistake of not looking though my papers and I thought my proprietary lease was 3 years. It was 2 and Riverbay automatically renewed me. Well thats not happening this time, I am OUT of this dump in 3 years.

I pretty much was born and raised in Co-op City Section #5. Lived there from 1970-1980. While i can honestly say that these were the best years of my life, i must say it was kind of rough even back then.
The intercoms were always broken. The back windows to the lobby were usually broken. The staircases and elevators were pissy with graffiti and they had gangs even back then. My cousins lived in the PJ's in Harlem and to be honest with you, there really wasn't much of a difference except that our apt was bigger and the buildings had terraces.
Not to mention, we lived across the hall from the incinerator so we had a never ending bout with roaches. Once i moved away, i would come back to visit and would hear about all the gunplay between cats from 5 and the Valley.
I don't know how it is now but it definitely had its issues back then. When i came back to visit in the 80"s at least they had fixed the intercoms and cleaned up all of the graffiti. I still call Section 5 home but it was definitely kinda rough.

EXBx: Co-op City was not build as a safe haven for working class white families in NY Looking to escape the Planet of the Apes. Co-op City was always mixed race, religion, creed, etc. It wasn't for white families. It was for NY's working middle class. Don't be such a jerk. Mine was a white family growing up in Co-op...my mom still lives there and is perfectly happy even when she can afford to live elsewhere and has plenty of offers to move towards her kids. Co-op remains a solid place to live, convenient to Manhattan, the suburbs, all of the Bronx. Look at your racism, which is disgusting and does not reflect the good solid people who've come from Co-op and many many hard working people who live there now.

I grew up in Co-op, in section 5. I still live in Co-op but not in 5. I visit my parents and have to admit that Section 5 sometimes looks absolutely crazy. I called Security one afternoon because there was a huge dog chained to the fence at PS 160. This dog was not a pit. It was larger, probably a Cane Corso. Google an image. I was told by the dispatcher that because the dog was on that side of the street, they would not respond. She kept asking me what building did I see the dog come out of. So, if someone was hurt on the city's side of the sidewalk, they wouldn't respond? I've seen that dog more than once and that dog isn't a pet. I can jump to the conclusion that dog belongs to a drug dealer. Then there are the hundreds of toy and teacup dogs that permeate Co-op. It just isn't fair. Not all of these dogs are 'therapy' dogs. Mgmt would rather spend money (and look stupid in the process) to go after someone who has proven that their animal is a service animal than go after all these ppl with these chi-chi dogs with bows and sweaters. Too many residents who disrespect the homes we live in with garbage, piss, spit and just being plain noisy 24hrs a day. The only way to get things done with Riverbay is to either know someone, like a Manager, or Board member, or to threaten a violation or threaten to sue. One too many times I've had to ask for personal help or threaten a violation. I was told they had no more flooring to replace a floor that was damaged because water from a rainstorm came through the exterior brick.(no the window wasn't open. this was after new windows were put in, and after Proto Const. came and "renovated" the brick). After I called 311 and told Riverbay I had a complaint # did they all of a sudden have flooring available. My floor was done twice. The issue with the shoddy brick work was never addressed but I was told by Mr. Cooper's office that they were going to review each building and put a plan in place. I think it's been a year since I was told that tale. New washing machine that don't have water. I think you need more than a cup of water to wash a load of laundry. I used the machines on two occasions in 2 different buildings. My clothes came out smudged with who knows what, and certainly not clean. I don't think I should wash the same load twice. Now I use the large capacity washers to ensure my clothes are clean. And the new washers leave the clothes smelly. The washers are new, so I can't imagine what my clothes would smell like after the machines are 5 yrs old. I'm angry and frustrated because I know Riverbay can do better, because it HAS done better. Perhaps its because Marion Scott Realty has impressed upon employees that Co-op is nothing but a project and residents should be treated as such. Maybe it's because morale is so low that employees just don't care anymore. Once upon a time it was a rule, and not the exception, to hear a friendly voice when I called any department.(Now the phone#s are a secret and u are forced to a phone tree). I had a new stove delivered on a Thursday. I was told they do stove pick ups only on Tuesdays. My response was "so i have to have 2 stoves in my 1 bedroom apartment?" They came and got it that day. I can't imagine the number of ppl that had to sit with 2 stoves in their apartment because they were threatened with a community complaint if the stove was left in the hallway. And yes, she did threaten a community complaint against me if I left the stove in the hallway. I've typed all this and it makes me wonder why I still live here. The landscaping is pretty. The grounds are swept, usually. Storm cleanup is an issue, though. It's rare to see guys shoveling earlier than 9am. They wait for the pick up with the plow. I guess I love to hate this place, and hate to love it. But, save your money and don't move here. It's like a guilded cage.

I used to live there but since moved long ago. I lived in 5 and the last straw was when a naked man with pantyhose on his head got on the elevator with me. He didn't bother me or say a word but it scared the hell out of me!

I thought this was where I wanted to be.
I have lived in a house my entire life; finally I have a family of my own and moved to co-op city. The decision was two years in the making. The price seemed reasonable for the area with so much access to so many things. Transportation surrounds the units also. We were so happy when we moved in. After six months, due to bank error, we were three days late on the rent payment. This was the first time this happened. The bank stopped all transaction payments due to negative activity in the account. Our rent payment was returned to us and they requested the entire amount of the unit,$28,000. We kept receiving letters after that with the process of housing court. During this process, I found out that if a shareholder moves out, they are required to still pay the carrying charges for three months after they leave! How much sense does that make and who can afford to live someplace else and still pay them? If they take you to court or have issues with you and they seek their attorney, you will be paying the fee of $200. We tried to work it out with the bookkeeping manager, Mr. Salegna, and he was the most unprofessional, disrespectful, racially guided individual I have ever had to speak to; he did not help or wanted to help with a situation we were totally new to. My lawyer called and spoke to him and received the same feedback. Riverbay Corp. was one of my biggest disappointments and I will NEVER advise anyone to move there. By the way, maintenance fees increase every year also.

It depends. if you're bulletproof, by all means, live in co-op city. and if you're really dark skin and are into drugs and gang activity, move to co-op. The rent is so cheap that you might as well be in a different neighborhood with section 8. Also, get a cheap phone. Don't walk around with an iphone or you will get attacked by 10-12 people. Also, gang members target teenagers to shoot or rob. Please don't move here. it's so scary. Unless you're Eminem and you're "Not Afraid" Don't use the free parking either because your car will get stolen. AND I REPEAT, DO NOT USE THE WASHING MACHINES AND DRYERS IN THE BUILDING. Your clothes will either be stolen, or somebody will pour kool-aid or grape soda into your washer and damage all of your clothes. That is all.
