We recently moved here from a larger afb.
Just driving threw clovis , I could tell this area was poverty.
People ask so much from the base, and wants the base to support the towns like clovis and portales, wheres the help for the military familys?
Why is it so hard to find employment?
Why is the housing so high for such run down places?
I hope they close this base, then people will relize just how great they had it and will make changes.
Do you think the new mission will stay here after they see how run down everything is?
The school system is far behind.
I am encouraging everyone I come in contact with not to support the towns, buy online.
Take away the military money flow and watch the towns cripple more.
The days of getting over on military familys, and milking them out of money are coming to a end.
I bet with in 5 years the base will be back on the brack.

We have orders to report this spring. Any advice? We have small children and dogs. Do we stay on or off base? Are there private schools?

I did four years at Cannon 02-06, I loved my house in Chaves west, but could'nt stand the wind, cow crap, flys, and horrible food.
If you do go there you have to get a house in Chavez west there a diamond in the rough.

I really wish that the negative comments about Clovis were not on here. Every place has its ups and downs. You need to remember, we the people should have open minds for our military and the communities. If you do not like this place, then move away, or quit judging. If you want something done, then don't just sit and complain, go to the city councel meetings. If we all have a voice, there will be change. Our military and our local businesses want to improve, come on out and help. We can all make the difference.

Clovis and Portales are a dump! Live in base housing because the cost of off-base housing is outragous. The choice of restaurants suck, local food is terrible. ENMU is a crappy school. I've been to better community colleges compared to ENMU. This place sucks the life out of you. God I can't wait for orders out of this s**thole.

Clovis is what you make of it. I found that if you are a negative person no matter where you live; you will have negative vibes all around you. Stop pointing the finger at Clovis and look in the mirror and that's where you will see crap.

Sorry Tee Tee, but I've been all over the world and this area reminds me of a third world country. I'm not a negative person, I just call it as I see it. So don't be too quick to judge.

Here is an update of my observations of this craphole.

The majority are working poor.
The roads are the worst I've ever seen.
There are no trees.
Need I say "sanctuary" city
Drunk drivers
Gangs
Drugs
Flies (I feel like I'm in Ethiopia)
High crime rate
Nowhere decent to shop
Nowhere good to eat
It smells like cow s**t
It smells of rotten beer from refineries
Everyone drives like they have nowhere to go (ironic cause there isn't anywhere to go)
Poor education for k-12
No Starbucks (there is one in Roswell, which is 2 hours away)

With all of the shady people here, I have now applied for a conceal/carry permit for my handgun.

Oh, Buchanon. Double that rent if you wanted to live in this dump nowadays.

Before relocating to Clovis NM you should check out -::- Welcome to CriminalCheck.com -::-. The zip code for Clovis is 88101.
I have lived in Clovis for over a year now and I can honestly say that the horror stories are true. The only people that will say different are the local realtors and that’s because they are trying to push their extremely overpriced homes.
Using the population number provided by clairz of 32,000 and divided by the number of registered sex offenders in Clovis you get 1 in 450.
1 out of 450 is a registered sex offender.
Don’t believe what you read or don’t read. I’ve seen posed in other blogs, a recommendation for newcomers to check out the police blotter in the online Clovis paper. Although, there is such a posted publication it comes with a disclaimer. The posted blotter is only a sampling of reports and not a full disclosure of all happenings.
Most military members with family are moving just across the border in TX.
The only people that will say Clovis is great are either illegal or part of the scum that feed off the military.
Still want to say that Clovis is a great place to live--- then check out the house made out of hay just outside the base gate at US60/84. The entire town is trash. The base considers ¾ of the town not suitable for military residence and it may increase. They have not decide yet where to draw the crap line at 21st or Lano Estacado. The effected areas are homes along those roads and south.
I also recommend getting a conceal carry license because the Clovis crime rate is on par with cities with populations of millions.
When you in process you will see a briefing on recommendations for safety. One of the safety items is a recommendation for females not to use gas stations or wal mart during hours of darkness.

Clovis is rough in many parts, just like parts of Florida and Virginia are. It is certainly butt ugly along the main streets, for sure, especially Mabry. The south side of town is becoming gang-infested, although they just busted five of them today, thank God.

However, there are alternatives. Texico and Farwell are not much to look at, but a reasonable commute to the base. Portales is the same drive time to Cannon as parts of Clovis are, and the south gate drive is a lot prettier. Portales is also somewhat more cultured, with the big university in town, and relatively safer and more kid-friendly (no gangs).

Then there are the boonie towns. Melrose, Ranchvale, Dora, etc. Great schools but bring a lot of books, unless you like horses.

I'm possible one of the unfortunate individuals that will be forced to move from Hurlburt to Clovis. I know a base is what you make of it but I also know when you have as many complaints as I have read and heard from people who have been stationed there it has to be some truth. They all are saying the same thing matter-of-fact had a good friend just got back from out there and he confirmed it is all true and the place is a shit hole. I believe someone got paid off to keep the place open. If 3/4 of the housing is not up to military standards what the fuck do they think the newly assigned GI's are going to do for housing. I will not give up my money to live in a crack house and as for the housing market it seems all they did was look at the housing prices in florida and applied it to the housing market there. News flash!!! those prices are for FLORIDA!!!! a place with a more to offer!!!! like a beach you stupid fucks who do you think is going to pay that type of money to live in a shit hole!!!!! Shifty 50 has been breathing in to much horse, pig, cow, shit!!!!!!

I can't speak for the base conditions but the town isn't that bad. Most people are very friendly and the pace is slow, which is good or bad depending on your personality. There is a halfway decent mall with a Dillards, for good Mexian food, Leal's mexican restaurant(awesome!), there is Casel Land where they have mini golf, go carts, batting cages, etc. The town recently built a small skate park. There is also a small zoo. There are run down areas of town but I don't know if there is a town or city that doesn't. The real estate prices are higher than they should be but not too outrageous. I recently moved from Clovis to another comparably sized southeastern NM town and believe me, not a day goes by that I don't miss Clovis. There are worse towns than Clovis with even less to do. I sympathize with the air force personnel because I know there are so many nicer places you could get stationed but as far as New Mexico, home of MANY small towns in the middle of nowhere there are worse towns than Clovis.

Realize that most of this talk is hyped fear of having to leave the coastal zone and other spectaculr areas for the windy, remote, cowboy country of Eastern New Mexico. The people in Clovis never had much to look at and really don't understand how to build a city. Thus the general appearance of rural blight, when in fact its really not that dangerous or poor (except the south half of Clovis). If you drive around you will see trailers and big beautiful homes, crappy signs and nice buildings, all the conflicting signs of a growing cow town. While there are a few homeless and scumballs in Clovis, they don't exist much in any other towns within a quick commute of the base. We have been shopping in Portales for a year and have not seen one homeless person. Then, there is Oasis State Park, Lubbock for the big box stores, urban scene and night life, and ENMU in Portales for culture, sports and the best daycare in the state of New Mexico. Did I forget, most of this area outside of the snake peddler zones of Clovis have great brick homes for cheap (compared to FL, NV. AZ, or CA)?

If you get into gardening and take off on weekends, its hard to beat for rural inland lving, and after a few months you stop jonsing for Target and accept that you hav one or two of nearly everything you need for day-to-day living. Ten you save up for vacations and shopping trips to the big city, which becomea bigger deal, thats all.

In fact, if you like small towns, parts of Clovis and most of Portales are pretty darn OK for kids, safety, education, civility, etc. Happening night life - not a chance. College scene in Portales?- yes. Kelly's? Yecch but passable as long as military outnumber

Anyone that post about this town being a quiet, rural, down home, ever growing town is full of it. An organization runs this entire town (the shifty 50), they regualte whether or not a chilis can come into town for 5 years. Talk about growth huh? Local business owners monopolize everything and cut off corporate growth at the knees. The town itself stinks, run down housing, horrid living conditions, and god awful prices for rent (because if your mil, they know what your making). Everything is a monopoly...even the local radio station. Where 2 fools play the same late 80's early 90's music on repeat 24/7. They also own the other 2 radio stations in town and do commercials for everyone. Education system (in the low 5% of the united states)...graduation rate (45%), teen pregnancy rate (65%). Drug running from texas to nevada and california...perfect place for gangs because small town cops dont have the resources and dont want to deal with it. And the mall is called "the hall" because once you walk in from anyside and you can see every store in plain sight. If Cannon closed down...this town would go under...the base has a higher enrollment rate in all the local schools and all the stores get the base pops income. And after hours probably 1/3 employees in a local store are from base or spouses.

You guys who complain so much about Clovis would literally die of boredom in Hobbs unless you like to play the slots. The mall here makes the one in Clovis look amazing. Point being: There are always worse places. Spend as much time in Lubbock and Amarillo as you can and then transfer out as quickly as possible is all I can tell you. On the flip side of that there are a lot of people who do grow to enjoy the town and actually stay. I guess it depends a lot on your personality. I do understand though, don't get me wrong. I hate where I live too.

Daily Horoscope for December 27

Taurus

Make a big effort to spend time with people you didn't see on Christmas Day, especially if they're older than you or are having a bad time at the moment. You're brimming over with compassion and empathy, which will be really appreciated by anyone who's on the receiving end of them. You're also in the mood to make allowances for people, and that will help enormously.
