Sallee makes one-of-a-kind creations using Barbie dolls

Full story: Vallejo Times-Herald

Call it divine intervention or just a fluke, artist LaVonne Sallee's discovery of downtown Vallejo as a place to live and bring her over-the-top Barbies was certainly by chance.

I was visiting the other day and happened by this "gallery." Her stuff is gross. As plagued/beleagured as Vallejo downtown is, it does not need this type of "stuff" on display. I don't care if she has won awards. This type of "art" will not help rehabilitate Vallejo one bit.

That's too bad that you can't see art for what it is. Art. Did you actually go into the gallery or just see the pieces in the window. Some of the pieces are pretty amazing. It may not be what your used to, but different is good. At this point, Vallejo needs the business.

The crap she has in her window borders on pornographic. I thought that
street turned a corner with the new restaurants. Who wants to explain a chain up barbie with a horse head in a sexual pose to a 8 year old child. What's to bad is she didn't move to Washington state. Do you think you would see this abomination in down town Napa, Benicia, Petaluma, or Sonoma. No you wouldn't. These city's have successful vibrant downtowns. Where is the city's leadership, do we even have an economic development department in place.

Well I hope her patrons in the gay community give her more support then they gave the Empress. Other wise she too will be closing shop soon.

I was trying to be gentle in the previous post. Well to heck with that. Her "images" are pornographic and occultish. I will not be bringing or referring anyone I know to her place or any business near it. I am sure there are many who appreciate her "art." And from other comments, there are others thinking as I do. Then again there are others who believe her "art" is welcome and a good thing. Well, Vallejo, just keep putting all your nastiness forward. You are just getting deeper into your grave. Sounds like some of you just do not get it.

Vallejo Visitor, you sound awfully prudish, lol. I think you would be happier in the Bible belt...

BTW, most any artist is better than a gangsta thug, anyday. Try to have a little vision--if you can manage it.

Barbie Dolls have always creeped me out. Something about those eyes. The gallery sounds like fun so I think I'll check it out. Here's an interesting link for all you Barbie lovers.

You come across as very clueless when it comes to appreciating art. Let me guess, you're one of those prudes who only applauds figurative or impressionistic works by the 'greats'? Anything else, with an ounce of creativite and ingenuity, is wrong. One thing you need to learn - no artist gives a damn about your opinion - we are selfish, and we create art for our own happiness. But, of course, you are always entitled to your opinion; regardless of how very invalid it may be. Oh, and if you find her work disturbing, then I believe you have been incredibly sheltered in life.

On another note, I'm surprised Vallejo would encompass a gallery that could entice such outgoing patrons. If only I lived closer, I would love to show them my portfolio.

this is the type of denegrated culture that is taking root in our town, compatible with grow shops, smoke shops, liquor shops on every corner dang near, whiskey bottle memorials, "high-end" graffiti spray paint, pit bull clinics, war zone high schools, no jobs, no hope, etc., still lookin' for a trader joe's.

Stick to your construction or cubicle job - you're not fit to serve in the art world; it takes a hell of a lot of bravery and courage to try and make it as an 'artist' in the real world. Few successfully prevail, and even fewer are noted in our history books.

If it walks like a duck and quacks like a duck, then it is a duck. And a spade is a spade. Her "art work" IS pornographic and occultish. Some of you can excuse away, but it is what it is.

So you are saying you are willing to settle? Obviously you are more tunnel-visioned than YOU realize. And by stating "most any artist" is actually a putdown for the very "artist" you are attempting to defend.

Daily Horoscope for June 2

Aquarius

You won't like it if you feel your wings are being clipped today. You want to do something in particular, only to discover that someone is objecting to your plans or that circumstances beyond your control are standing in your way. Although your instincts tell you to throw a tantrum to get your point across, you must ask yourself what this will achieve, and whether it will actually be self-defeating.
