"Creek County residents had a lot to say about health care, government spending and religion." religion really. thats so pathetic. maybe we should tax churches and we could afford to do a heck of alot more then just healthcare reform

Well, armadillos may be stupid enough to fall for the old marshmallow ploy, but even they aren’t dumb enough to believe that our current health care crisis will be solved by tax cuts.$5,700 credits for families to buy insurance? Are you freakin’ kidding me? Jesus, that playbook must be worn out by now!

Armadillos aside, I don’t think one can have a surgical procedure for less than $15,000- probably more like $25,000 & up, depending on if you have a hospital stay.
That alone is probably enough to bankrupt most families.
$2,300 for individuals per year is not enough- when you figure prescriptions. eye exams & glasses, preventative dental- plus if you need any actual dental work. That amount MAY cover a very healthy person with little or no medical issues– but throw in a spendy disease, like diabetes, you would not even come close to real costs.
Some insulins cost $300 for one month’s supply.
That’s $3600 for ONE prescription & that would not even cover syringes, test strips, doctor’s visits, opthalmologist eye exams, etc……
Without a public option, we are just like a trapped Aramdillo in a cage.
Hmmm! Maybe THAT is why all the clamor about gun access. U.S. Sen. Tom Coburn would like to shoot those who exceed the $2,300 annual tax credit medical expenses.
Just sayin

Fran, I don't think the tax credits are for actual medical expenses.. but rather to purchase insurance that will then pay for the actual expenses. Big difference.
I would like to know more details but it seems logical that creating competition among insurance companies could well result in lower rates, so these prices may not be too far-fetched..
All I know, is I don't want government controlled health care. Ask any Canadian. Ask anyone from England. It doesn't work! We have the best health care and people come from all over to partake in what we have.
The lawmakers themselves don't want what they have proposed for us... why would we want what they won't even accept?

I am on the email list of the Sojourner's organization. It is a moderate Christian outfit and really middle of the road.

Right-wing Republican Bible-thumpers/proof-texters call Jim Wallis, the ordained minister who founded the group, a left-wing liberal.

Jim Wallis wrote in an email I got from him today, "We are calling on people of faith to carry on the healing ministry of Jesus by making sure your political representatives understand that the faith community will be satisfied with nothing less than accessible, affordable health care for all Americans, built on a solid financial foundation."

Taking care of the needs of the ill is an important tenet of what Jesus taught his followers.

There a lots of people who are still Believers in Jesus; but, they won't go to any church for help because of the spiritual abuse (not even biblically supported) they endured in them.

Does anyone see anything substantive in this 'story' that is critical or offers an opposing view of Coburn's 'plan'?

Particularly vexing was the following:

"With much less fanfare than their Democratic counterparts, several Republicans unveiled their health care plan back in May."

I remember May. I remember the Republican "plans." I remember much fanfare. I remember little substance. And I don't remember any depth.

Not confronting the mechanics of how Coburn's plan will drive down health costs for the middle class is unacceptable. Not analyzing how people from Eastern Oklahoma might actually benefit from Coburn's plan, considering that, among all of the Congressional districts in the US, Eastern Oklahoma stands to benefit most from the public option, is also unacceptable.

Anyone else notice Coburn running next year? Let's hope the reporting improves, otherwise no one will really know what they are voting on. That would never happen in Oklahoma, would it?

The tax credit is to pay for your insurance! It is not so that you can pay your own medical expenses out of your own pocket!!! If that were the case I would have $1500 left over every year!

You don't seem to understand... Coburn's plan IS the alternative. It's the alternative to a government controlled healthcare system. Anyone who wants to have someone else run their lives for them is more than welcome to give me their money and also control of their time. I will gladly provide you with the shelter that you deserve, the expenses of which will be taken from your labor. I will keep the excess. As for myself, I want the government out of my business. That includes my healthcare. The federal government doesn't have the constitutional authority to provide a national healthcare system anyway. They are supposed to be regulating interstate commerce but instead they are trying to circumvent it!

And this is precisely why critical, analytical reporting is vital. I wish more people who write stories cared.

I don't know why people think that Obama's health care plan is going to be so affordable for us. The truth is we really can't afford it at all. Take Canadian health care... it's not really free. Maybe you don't have to pay when you go in.. but you have to pay around 50% of your income in taxes to the government so they can do a poor job of managing your health care. Oh, sure you can go to a private doctor if you don't have the 6 months to wait for an appt. or if you haven't been lucky enough to win one of the lotteries for a doctor of your own, but a simple checkup with a private doctor will cost around $900. No, I have to say, we have it pretty good right now. It's not broken.. let's not fix it. And just so you know.. I am self employed and uninsured so I understand the problem.. I also understand what's at stake.

The tax credits are socialized medecine and we dont want that. The insurance industry receives tax free benefits now, plus they can pick and choose who they will insure. Its the Nixon, plan and it never worked and was not designed to work. Coburn, I receive medicare and it works fine so leave it alone. Keep your repub. hands off medicare and I dont need amo or for that matter any guns.

"Mid life crisis"...explain. I must have missed something there.

I have attended a Coburn town hall meeting. If, as you say, they are only for dumbed-down audiences, I am proud to call myself dumbed down. If intelligence means wilfully submitting more and more of my life to government, I will proudly consider myself unintelligent.

Don't pay any attention to Tjaun. He's just a Democrat troll that hates all republicans and can't find a job to pay for his health care.
