I honestly think Ms. Raye Dawn Smith is as more fault than Mr. Porter only because she was her damn mother. How could she allow something to happen like that to her baby girl. And to abuse her as well. Guilty AS CHARGED.
These two people deserve everything they get!!

Raye Dawn Smith, hmm, I never saw any pictures of bruises on her guess she didn't care since it wasn;t her pain. I never heard any thing so shameful they all waited too long those child abuse charges should have been filed in Jan.before this child died. but who knew? They were all negligent in my opinion.

I cant believe any mother would do this to their own child. I hope and pray raye dawn smith faces so many charges and gets locked up for a very long time .. as well as Mr. Porter.

This breaks my heart. How could a mother allow this to happen to her CHILD. My god I hope she and her husband get what they deserve, to be raped, beaten, and killed in jail like the animals they are. Shame on these people. A mother is here to protect their child and if ANYONE would do anything to my girls, I would be in jail, unlike this woman, it would be for the murder of the person that hurt my child. I cannot recall a time I have been so sad and yet so furious at the same time. Bless that baby and I hope God shows no mercy on these peoples soul for what they did to this child. An eye for an eye.

If more people would post and show the world,just how inept the childrens services are in this country,i think that there would have to be a change...i worked many years in the ER and seen so many cases just like Kelseys,but nothing ever would get done other then in the ER,we would call CPS but they would do not a damn thing,,,,Keep Kelsey alive and when ever we see or hear anything such as this we all need to step up and post it about every state that needs changed.

It was this womans resposibility, assigned by God, to care for this child. Ultimately, her guilt will outlast Kelsey's death and her own. I hope she rots.

I believe that as a mother you would know if your child is being abused. How can you not? If you know then leave, if you stay you are GUILTY!!!!!!
Raye does not deserve to get out and I pray that no one helps her. Kelsey and God knows the truth and it will prevail!
I do pray for Lance and the Briggs family and I also pray for Grandmother Smith, I pray that she comes to her senses and see's her daugther is at fault too! I know it is hard but this should of never happened in the first place.

I hope this lady endures so much torture in prison. She got off too easy. We should beat her with a brush, spit on her, starve her, and hang her by her fingers. Worthless piece of crap. Hope her family reads this!!!!!! I am sorry to sound so harsh but this pisses me off. I am a mother of two and I dare a man to put thier hands on my kids. This story is one of the saddest I have ever heard. I have so many questions. Why was Kelsey returned to the maternal grandmother instead of being returned back to the Briggs grandparents, where she went the first time? Who was with her when her legs were broken? When her collar bone was broken whos care had she been in? What did they say caused it? Did anyone ask about the bruises? Did anyone ask Kelsey? I understand she was only two. But a two year old can say mommy, daddy, or point a finger. What about the step sister I heard about who elbowed Kelsey in the eye and nose. Did she show signs of child abuse? Why didn't the Briggs family and the mothers parents say something? Do something? This just blows my mind, how so many people had contact with this child and no one seemed to do anything!! When Social Services saw the bruises, broken legs, how do you give a child back saying that the abuse is unknown? So what it happened and until the mother or stepfather or grandparents, or the cause is known, then the child does not go back to the place where the accident happened! I have three children of my own, and a grand child. I know that when my children were small I would have to have an explaination for any mark on there body. If I had seen broken bones, They wouldn't go back to place where it happened. This story makes no sense to me. I have stayed up nights trying to make some sense of it. The judge??? What? Why? How?? How do you place a child back in torture?? What did he mean when he says he never heard about the broken legs, never saw pictures of the facial bruises. Who was the prosecutor. Why weren't these pictures in the judges hands??? Families you show the pictures now, why didn't you make sure you handed over all the evidence you had to try and keep Kelsey out of her mothers home??? I do hope that Michael Porter, and Kelseys mother stay in jail for the resst of thier lives, I want them to get what they gave by the other inmates in prison. I do not understand how a mothe rcould allow this to happened. There were so many pictures of Kelsey you would be led to believe at one time her mother did love her, to have had so many pictures taken of her. Did this man Michael Porter change her, or was it in her all along?? Did she also engage in the beatings? Didn't anyone ask Kelsey? I would love to know the entire story one day so that I can bring closer of it in my mind.

this story is so sad I can not believe that the mother let all this happen to her daughter because she wanted a man..I wouldve left him the first time he layed a hand on my child..she knew her daughter was being abused thats just common sense..I think the whole family are a bunch of quacks..i think michael porter,kathie briggs,raye dawn,were all involved in hurting this child during her life..and kelseyd father didnt care that all this was happening to his daughter..how could this child be hated so much??..it is bullshit i hope that raye dawn and michael porter rot in hell and never get out of prison..

ANYONE who abuses a child in any manner deserves what he or she gets in prison. Child molesters and abusers are dealt with in all kinds of painful manners in prison. Maybe Ms Smith will endure some torture on her own body. Wonder then if she'll get a glimpse of what she allowed her little girl to endure?
It just makes me sick to think about what all Kelsey went through. A little girl in Spirit Lake, IA went through it too. Two little girls. How many others out there are suffering too? How many state systems are aiding in allowing this to happen because of the "red tape" involved?

It also did not sit right with me that the Raye Dawn's family was selectively dunning folks for money for an appeal. So, I took the time to research via the web and read the articles. I do not know the people involved in this case. I do not know what actually happened. I do know a child died and the only family around the child for the last 4 short months of her life were Raye Dawn's and Mike Porter's. This was stated in court and no one disputes this.
I came across a link to the Presentencing Investigation report (PSI) on another newspaper's website. It was developed by independent court professionls, was signed on August 14, 2007 ans submitted (filed) on August 23, 2007 (the original sentencing date for Raye Dawn Smith).
On pages 14 and 15 there is a summary and recommondation. Here is the actual text. Drawn you own opinions from this - the court professional have:
“RECOMMENDATION: Based upon the background information compiled during this investigation, it is respectfully recommended that the Defendant, Raye Dawn Smith, be sentenced to a term of incarceration as recommended by the jury.”
Summary Basis:
“Smith denies culpability in this offense. Smith denies she allowed Kelsey to be abused. Instead, Smith attempts to diminish her responsibility for the abuse of her daughter and projects blame to others who were the only individuals who took actions to protect Kelsey. Because of Smith’s denial of responsibility, it is unlikely that Smith will display a willingness to change her behavior. Through her actions and omissions, Smith has shown she poses a serious threat to any children or minors in which she has been entrusted for their care.
Given the length of time that Kelsey was abused and allowed to be abused, it appears the Instant Offense was not situational but rather a persistent pattern of behavior that ultimately resulted in her death.”
