My brother John and I both grew up in Farmington, CT. We both caddied at The Country Club predominantly on weekends. I graduated from Farmington High School in 1960. I used to play golf pretty well; in fact, I had unrealistic aspiration of joining the PGA Tour, but now my handicap is my swing!
While the weather in San Diego is definitely addictive, I still miss the rocks and rills and temple hills of CT and especially the knowledgeable breadth and depth of the people in CT and the rest of New England. What I don't miss are the cold weather, the sultry humid summers & mosquitoes.
Farmington High School
We were all truly blessed to have such dedicated and inspirational teachers at Framington High School who helped all of us to be the best that we could possibly be. All of us who benefitted from their knowledge, dedication, love and support should be eternally grateful.
University Experience
I had the distinct privilege of attending and graduating from the Johns Hopkins University. One of my fellow classmates is, Mike Bloomberg, now "Mayor Mike," Mayor of NYC!
At Hopkins I got to meet some very interesting and prominent people: Norman Thomas, who was a perennial Socialist Presidential candidate, Richard Nixon, definitely brilliant, and definitely also introverted and paranoid especially in groups but very personable one-on-one, George Wallace, the infamous former Governor of Alabama, Joan Baez, an attractive and very popular vocalist of the 60's, and last, but certainly not least, Jayne Mansfield, who was so pretty in person and who had those "bodacious headlights" that turned every virile young man crazy when she walked!
I also met some notable sports figures: Mickey Mantle and Whitey Ford at Sweeney's, a popular Tavern that was frequented by professional baseball and football players after their games in Baltimore's Memorial Stadium. On other occasions, I met and had genial conversations with Hank Bauer, Harvey Haddix, and Tony Conigliaro before Tony got beaned!
Dr. Milton Eisenhower, the brother of Ike, was the President of Hopkins during my matriculation. I always enjoyed going to his residence on campus. It would be four o'clock and he'd say, "Let's see, it must be five o'clock somewhere, it's time for a martini!" Later at an alumni function I said to Dr. Eisenhower, "Gee, you look great!" He paused and smiled and said, "Fred, there are three stages in a person's life: Youth, middle age, and gee you look great!"
The Hopkins Homewood campus was close to Memorial Stadium where the Orioles and the Colts played baseball and football. The one thing that is seared in my memory was that segregation was still prevalent in Baltimore during the early 60's. For example, at "Hooper's," a prominent restaurant next to Sweeney's, a black person e.g., could work as a waiter, but he or she couldn't be served as a patron. Fortunately, for our entire country, we've come a long way socially since then!
Parenthetically, I used to fly predominantly on Pan Am in business or first Class when they were still in business. On one memorable flight I sat next to Charlton Heston after Wimbledom. He was such a very genteel person and so down-to-earth. It's tragic that he suffered from Alzheimer's. I was supposed to be on the ill-fated Pan Am flight over Lockerbee, but fortunately my firm was forewarned that “something was up,” and it just wasn't my time yet to check out from this planet.

Daily Horoscope for June 2

Sagittarius

You're feeling ultra optimistic today, which is great for summoning up the necessary energy to do what has to be done. But don't let it go to your head and convince you that you're capable of performing miracles. If you aren't behaving in this way you'll have to cope with someone who has a swollen head and thinks they're the cat's whiskers.
