Bring on the big boxes - Humboldt Beacon

Full story: Humboldt Beacon

On Saturday June 6, as I walked through the crowded streets of Fortuna, observing the people that came from miles around to shop at the city wide "yard sale", it dawned on me that people would be willing to drive to Fortuna if only there was a reason to.

I 100% agree! I've worked for a box store before and they don't cater to everyone's needs. While Walgreens offers a drive thru which I love, I still go to Green's because of the customer service. Yes, the smaller stores will have to re-think their methods a little but there is enough to go around. We need the tax dollars, the jobs and box stores put money back into the community with donations. Wake up Fortuna you can really do great things for the city.

this is so true,i lived in humboldt county all my life, my sons were born in fortuna. We transferred to Redding for better opportunies.Everytime we go home to visit,we see more and more closed business's and no jobs.I have worked for 15 yrs at a major "BIG BOX",DC..I make very good wages and great benefits and never would make this kind of earnings in fortuna, yes my friends come over to redding to shop all the time, Wake-up friends, look out pass your rose-colored shades and realize you could have better choices and a better life.

I agree too. What an opportunity for Fortuna to fill that void. I moved to Humboldt County 5 years ago and it's hard for me to understand the attitude of most people in this area that somehow cheaper prices and jobs are a bad thing. We better wake up! It's going to be rough sledding, economically, for a long time. This is truly a beautiful place but if people can't make a living they can't afford to live here and that in turn continues to lower the property values. The Danco projects, while providing low cost housing, do not contribute to the tax base and only provide short term employment for a few (not necessarily local). I know I need a job

The clowns in office and the uniformed public do not realize the amount of internet shopping humbolt people are doing. Why pay for overpriced limited selection products when you can buy online, shipped free,no tax, lower price.
We purchase the majority of our stuff online. Since moving here we have noticed that everything is 20-50% higher in cost and the supermarkets are over the top. A Walmart supercenter would bring prices down in the area, slow down internet sales and provide much tax revenue. Every time you see a fedex or ups truck; they contain lost tax revenue.

Wal*Mart tried to come to either McKinleyville or Fortuna, I forget which, some years ago, and was shot down by the locals. So they put it 80 some miles north, in Crescent City.

Go back to where you came from if you want a big box so bad. Fortuna is much better off retaining it's rural small town atmosphere. A big box would literally RUIN our town.

Daily Horoscope for December 27

Libra

You're full of empathy and affection today, so it would be a shame not to spread it around. It's a marvellous day for a low-key get-together with some of the people you haven't seen during the past few days, because you'll enjoy having a good chat about what's been happening. Once your social duties are out of the way you'll love curling up on the sofa with a good book or a favourite film.
