Uh, we have a slight? problem here.
The New York Association for Pupil Transportation is NOT, I repeat NOT an authorized law enforcement agency. They do NOT have the right or authority to apprehend drivers who pass school buses illegally. To the best of my knowledge, ONLY duly authorized agents or agencies (AKA police / police) have the right AND authority to apprehend drivers who illegally pass school buses. |

I think you are missing the point. not stopping for a bus you break a law. by putting these devices on the bus will not allow them to apprehend you but to send you a ticket for disobeying a traffic signal. so good for them and I hope to see that here. I would not like to see my kids killed. because of someone being stupid.

We also have the problem of the buses. They can be confusing. Yellow lights...proceed with caution. Red Stop. Sounds simple doesn't it. How many buses put on the red flashing lights as they pull up to the house (many times before coming to a complete stop). The kid isn't ready and while the bus driver accomadates these kids the traffic is building up behind the bus. After awhile the bus driver will switch to the yellow lights allowing traffic to proceed THEN the kid appears and runs to the bus and the bus driver switches to red lights. I can't tell you how many times I've seen drivers (including myself) in the process of passing the bus with the yellow flashers as the bus switches to the red. I believe that more bus drivers need to be retrained, tolerant of the conditions around them and then if the kid is not ready leave. I also believe that the parents should have to get off their butts and make sure they're ready when that bus arrives. I belive the kids should walk to school anyway and then I think if these parents are that irrsponsible and lazy to get their kids on the bus (in front of the house) what makes me think these parents will get their kids to school. Can't parents take responsiblity for anything? But, back to the bus drivers. I think many of them need to be re-trained.

When someone passes a school bus with its lights flashing, even in the bus loop at school, the driver or anybody else can take down the plate number and report it to the bus garage. Once this is done a warning is issued to the offender, assuming it is a first offense, and then a ticket can be issued for a subsequent offense.

There are those "lawbreakers" no doubt. But, I would also hate to see my kids killed because the bus driver switches from red to yellow and then back to red. In my comment I stated that many cars are in the process of passing the bus with the yellow flashing lights and the bus driver will SUDDENLY switches back to red when the tardy child appears from the house. |
