Surely the state differentiates between for-profit and not-for-profit organizations in many contexts. Why not here? The legal line is clear.

As for Deen protecting our rivers, getting people to appreciate them is important to that. Getting people out in human- and wind-powered boats is part of that, just as the fishing trips Deen guides are. So I'd assume the suggestion that the river might be "protected" from rowers is from the reporter, and not from Deen?

Whit I couldn't agree more with your statement. People who use and enjoy our rivers are the ones who have the most interest in keeping them clean, accessible and healthy. This is not unlike the majority of hunters who buy licences and follow the laws to ensure that the deer herds and their habitat remain healthy.

so a public recreation area is taken over by business people who lure in smog machines (SUV's & pickups) from miles around so they can make money and people think it's a sin to chase them off ?

The government should work to shut down more circus's held on public property that draw large crowds and are commericalised events full of vendors trying to make money off parades, fairs and the rest of the garbage that attracts herds of smog machines from miles around.

joe, it is because of people like you that this state relies so much on taxing the middle class. Chasing a business opportunity out of this community is ridiculous, especially in this economy. If you think it is worth while to chase 300 people out of this state who would be staying at local hotels and eating at local restaurants, just because they are not driving a prius, you should check your priorities. I won't loose any sleep over a few dead polar bears.

Joe is no fan of the Prius. He typically champions the capitalist over the environmentally conscious. This time he just feels that he can disagree with more people by taking the side he has.

Most times he would join you in disparaging the polar bears.

The obvious solution is to put motors on those rowboats. Internal combustion made this country grate, not a bunch of ivy league backwards-canoe paddlers. Motor boaters rule!!! I'll be glad to swamp those preppies with my Evinrude!

GFNB, you are very funny when you attempt to be the redneck you think everyone else is.

It is about the only time that you don't 'grate' on my nerves.

PS, you forgot to include semi-automatic weapons in your caricature.

explain how society benfits sending money to OPEC for oil ?

Business that creates wealth is different than business that wastes wealth. A lot of business goes on in ghetto's, drug business, booze stores, bars and everyone has a grand old time but doesn't create any wealth, just wastes it having fun.

Hotels & resturants create garbage jobs that pay chump change and you look at it as a good thing because the state gets a few tax dollars while spending how much to support those low paid service industry workers and their children ?

if the theory of running a entertainment state really worked, vermont would be wealthy instead of a welfare state. Florida samething, the money flows in and the people don't make out too well in the service industry job market. Running a hotdog stand to feed tourists isn't a business that produces wealth, it's a McJob.

A massive six flags amusement park doesn't make for a wealthy community when everyone else is taxed to provide government aid to the low paid workers in service industry jobs. Vermont has just chased jobs out of the state catering to the tourist industry by supplying it with cheap labor and taxing other business out of the state trying to provide government aid to the McWorkers in service industry jobs.

the racket is good for people with money because they run the toursit traps, it doesn't lift people up who have no money as they work the McJobs created, they remain in poverty. They aren't getting ahead at all working for the labor racketeers who moved into the state to exploit the tourist trade and block all development to keep the tourists coming

the vermont tourist trap business model has failed the population 1/3rd of the children get free lunch at school and the state is losing the best & brightest of it's young people because there is nothing here for them besides McJob's.

Seeing the bigger picture is require to get it, going on emotions will never cut it. When IBM was big in the state the wealth created was spread around the community where they where located, I live in the middle of ski country and see poverty amoung the locals because the industry creates garbage jobs besides for a few fat cats who already had money, they get even richer exploiting the tourist trade and middle class people get taxed to support their service industry labor force so get poorer while the rich guy gets richer.

You people in Vermont keep voting overwhelmly liberal in support of special interest group stuff. And this is the ramifications of your desire to "be one" with the environment. Now these ultra environmentalist have snookered you and this is the end result.
Something wonderful and representative of your area traditions and community gets lost in the wonderful world of stupidity. And you did this, keep voting Democrat and more wonderful rulings will come your way again, and again, and again.

Go back and read the article, Junior - priority is given to motorized boats because the state agency's budget is paid for from a fuel tax. That means the greenies didn't get their way, and we need to vote in some more Democrats to rectify the situation.

Hold on ther Nellie, don't up and get you panties all in a twist. I am a "greenie" and a Republican, and I don't see any need in further compromising this state by electing any more Democrats. For all of our sakes, le't hope that good folk like Tommy Salmon runs for Governor.
