One wonders with the detailed sampling of the reactor coolant...they knew through the trace detection of metals what was happening.

One of the less-reported stories involves an accident the occurred during the outage, where a worker fell into the San Onofre Reactor 2 reactor pool on January 27th. David Lochbaum, who worked in nuclear plants for 17 years before joining the nonprofit Union of Concerned Scientists, said he believes small particles of uranium fuel —- sometimes called “fuel fleas” or “hot particles”—- could have been in the San Onofre Reactor 2 reactor pool when the worker fell in.

After looking at a set of reactor operation statistics published on the NRC’s website, Lochbaum said the radiation levels in the plant’s cooling system doubled from January to February 2011 and continued to climb through the end of the year. He shared his findings that increasing levels of radiation in the water that cools the reactor probably indicates that the metal tubes — called cladding — that contain its fuel pellets are cracking.

Those cracks, he said, could have released particles into the reactor pool when uranium fuel was removed from the reactor core during refueling, well before the worker’s fall.

“The chart shows that San Onofre Unit 2 had operated for several months with degrading fuel cladding,” Lochbaum said.“The opening in the fuel cladding that allowed radioactivity to escape into the water at ever-increasing rates could have also been a pathway for fuel fleas —- small particles of fuel pellets —- to escape.”

That is highly suspicious having elevated rad levels and worries of cladding integrity...and SG tube damage.

Cladding damage can come from:

1) poor chemistry coming to IGSSC or intergranular stress corrosion cracking

2)overpowering a pin

3)debris circulating in coolant and sandblasting the cladding away...

Japan-Made Reactor Unit Had Cracks Before Delivery to U.S.

By Kyodo News International

WASHINGTON, Feb. 28 (Kyodo)— Cracks and damage were found in a Japan-made steam generator for a nuclear reactor in Southern California in 2009 before its delivery to the plant, U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission documents showed Tuesday.

The steam generator, produced by Mitsubishi Heavy Industries Ltd., was installed at the unit 3 reactor at the San Onofre nuclear power plant in California, which suffered a minor radiation leak in late January.

It remains unclear whether the cracks and the radiation leak were related.

At the nuclear plant, operated by Southern California Edison, abnormal attrition was also found earlier this month in the tubes of another Mitsubishi-made steam generator installed at the unit 2 reactor.

Mitsubishi Heavy and Southern California Edison both declined to comment, saying they are under investigation.

Edwin Ryman, a nuclear expert at the Union of Concerned Scientists, said the problems could be attributed to either defects in the part or inappropriate operation.

A steam generator, composed of fine tubes, is a critical part of a pressurized water reactor.

According to the NRC documents, cracks and damage were found in the steam generator of the unit 3 reactor during checks by Mitsubishi Heavy in March 2009.

A follow-up probe found heat treatment prior to welding caused the problem and the NRC informed the utility and others concerned.

I was listening to a libtard sheeple radio show (Thom Hartman) and some caller living near San Onofre said it is coming uo for renewal soon, but I google it and it seems it has 10 years more yet b 4 relicensing?

If you weren't such an idiot, you would know that a plant can apply up to 20 years in advance, such as Seabrook.

Ethicists Argue Killing Newborn Babies Should Be Allowed
Shocking reminder that eugenicist beliefs underpin medical establishment
http://www.infowars.com/ethicists-argue-killi...
A paper published in the Journal of Medical Ethics argues that abortion should be extended to make the killing of newborn babies permissible, even if the baby is perfectly healthy, in a shocking example of how the medical establishment is still dominated by a eugenicist mindset.

The paper is authored by Alberto Giubilini of Monash University in Melbourne and Francesca Minerva at the Centre for Applied Philosophy and Public Ethics at the University of Melbourne.
The authors argue that “both fetuses and newborns do not have the same moral status as actual persons,” and that because abortion is allowed even when there is no problem with the fetus’ health,“killing a newborn should be permissible in all the cases where abortion is, including cases where the newborn is not disabled.”

the radio show caller said the nuke was "coming up for renewal soon"
How silly of me to assume soon means soon.
But in Nuketard understanding "soon" means 10 1/2 years from now.
So by the same nuketard logic, all that deadly nuke fuel waste will 'soon' lose its radioactivity and be 'safe'*

San Onofre Nuclear Plant Reports More Test Failures

By CASSANDRA SWEET
More failed pressure tests of critical equipment at a Southern California nuclear-power plant raised new concerns about safety and possible electricity shortages this summer.

Edison utility said Friday four steam tubes, or metal pipes, that carry radioactive water failed pressure tests. Three other tubes ruptured during testing earlier in the week, prompting the Nuclear Regulatory Commission to send a team to investigate.

SoCal Edison said it was taking the ruptures seriously, and was looking for alternative power sources to serve customers. The utility said it would continue testing more than 120 similar tubes before making a decision as to how or when it might restart the plant.

The utility was considering voluntary conservation measures, beefing up existing transmission lines to be able to ship more power from other areas, upgrading existing power plants to generate more electricity, and even rolling blackouts if the plant was still shut this summer, said Jennifer Manfre, a SoCal Edison spokeswoman

NRC TO SEND AUGMENTED INSPECTION TEAM TO
SAN ONOFRE NUCLEAR GENERATING STATION

The Nuclear Regulatory Commission will send an Augmented Inspection Team (AIT) to
the San Onofre Nuclear Generating Station to review the circumstances that led to three tubes failing a pressure test at Unit 3 yesterday.
Operators of the plant, located near San Clemente, Calif., shutdown Unit 3 on Jan. 31, after a tube leak in one steam generator was identified. Resident inspectors responded to the control room to monitor site activities during the incident. The unit has remained safely shutdown and NRC has had a steam generator expert and additional inspectors at the site inspecting the licensee’s activities and tests of the steam generator tubes.

Seriously do you have a clue what you’re talking about? Yes CR-3 has containment issues, from an improperly executed de tensioning process. Not from faulty material, the unit is defueled and sitting idle, so with that in mind who cares if it’s cracked.
As for DB there was no cracking in the concrete, a worker thought he had spotted a crack. Experts were flown in and analyzed the situation. Nothing was there; FENOC did the right thing in this case.
SONGS does have generator issue but nothing to the degree of panic you’re posting about. Things are still in the very early stages of inspection, hell the unit at this point hasn’t even fully cooled. This will not be solved in days, or even weeks. I wouldn’t look for unit 3 to be on line for several months.
As for the most resent SONGS news, a worker fell in the Containment pool. Yeah it happened; the guy was an idiot, no way around that. The difference is he’s an employee; a contractor would have been fired on the spot and escorted out the gate. It was even covered up/ pushed under the rug at SCE. The incident was labeled a “Near Miss”, near miss my ass. He fully fell in the pool. The fact that SCE made such a joke about, prompted an enterprising local to make a shirt about it “Contaminated, Swim at own risk”.
Don’t believe the SCE hype, retaliation is alive and well at SONGS. Any worker who had any sort of issue or injury on the previous project, or spoke aloud about problems. Was individually excluded from employment on this project. So yes retaliation is very much alive at SONGS
