Set designer for Midlands arts groups
With his gray hair and neatly trimmed beard, Carl Copeland Jr. looked the part of an artist and a sailor -- and he was both.
He died Sunday at 67.
Copeland for a time lived on his boat on Lake Murray. He later turned a huge chicken barn near Lexington into a home and studio.
'He went sailing last week --had on his pirate cap and everything,' said Olaf Wenger,who had worked with Copeland on various projects for seven years.
Copeland designed sets for local theaters, dance and opera companies, did work on several movies and painted murals. He could design for just about anything. Read more
