2 I agree 100% with you. There is no reason for a teacher to have a cell phone on the desk and it should be turned off and left in a purse or coat pocket. If an emergency is serious enough to get a cell phone call, it is serious enough to call school and let a secretary or administrator get in touch with the teacher, as they would with a student. And while we're on it, why have a dress code for students and not for teachers who violate the code in the same manner as the kids? I know with age comes some privilege but it also comes with some responsibility. |

I have thought that about the dress code too. Some of the teachers look less professional than McDonald's employees.
I can't agree about the cell phones. There is such an emergency that lives may be saved if there is a way to reach the police. Columbine, Paducah for example. Before anyone says "not here" know that there was a student about 2 or 3 years ago threatening to shoot his senior class mates on graduation day. He was even telling the underclasses to say to good-bye to their older siblings. The threat was taken seriously and the boy was removed. Had he not boasted??? I am impatient with todays young people, 30 and under, who think they have to run to the cell phone every time it rings or a text message come in, though. Remember when we had to drive aroung a find a pay phone? HOW DID WE SURVIVE? |

WE were not debating kids having phones, it is reality these days! The topic was about, teachers having them on their desks during class and/or picking them up during a class. You talk about Columbine, so in case of an emergency for teachers or CHILDREN they all should have that rite. As far as the dress code, really it should be about learning not what they are wearing. If someone wants to pay for my childs clothes, then they can tell me how they can dress. My children happen to be dressed very well and very good students. Your dress attire does not define who you are as a person. If that was the case, then everyone that is walking around wearing camofladge would be considered a REDNECK. The saying should be do as I do, and dont judge, but the teachers do differently and judge kids by their clothes everyday.

1 Back to my comment on dress codes. I have no objection to clothing if it isn't a distraction to others. But if a teacher or adult in the building is dressed similarly as some of these kids, it could certainly be a distraction to some. I would hope I don't need to clarify what type of clothing I am referring to. |

The dress code is about distractions in the classroom.
Years ago there were some t-shirts, I can't remember the name of them, that the high school boys were wearing. They were somehow sports related like "tennis players have fuzzy balls" and they were the first ones I remember the school banning. The boys tried wearing flannel shirts over them and then the girls started wearing more revealing shirts and spaghetti strapped shirts and wearing flannels over them. That is my recollection of why the dress code began to be seriously inforced. BTW my daughter tried and was busted. I was a single mom with three kids, one in each school, and was happy that they busted her. She set out to break the rules and got punished. It is their job to judge the sincerity of the student. Good students respect their teachers lead. My daughter was in more trouble with me for sneaking than she got at school. Some of the students have reported and it's been proven that the teachers were texting, checking their e-mail and answering their messages during class time. Lots of adults have attitudes like juvenile delinquents and some of them are choosing to teach. Would we be o.k. with the male teachers wearing the earlier mentioned t-shirts? Are we o.k. with them playing on their cell phones on our kids learning time? As long as we're being real aren't the cell phones technical toys? |

the school would be a better place if it was governed by something big. Like space. space is scary. no one messes around with space. and cake.

Black moth super rainbow - What?!
Anyways, I think it's ok for both teachers and students to carry cell phones. In the classroom, ALL phones should be silenced and put away so there's no temptation to text or respond to messages. I don't think there's a problem with students/teachers talking,texting or checking messages in between classes or during lunch or their own personal time. |

I agree with you Essex mom. I had a situation today at the high school level, where my child text me to let me know a sport was having practice, we were on a TBA wait. She was told to hand the phone to the teacher, I have always told my children you can hand over the phone if you get caught, but remove the sim card and battery. It is not up for discussion, they (the school) can take the phone, but they DO NOT have a rite to search through my childs personal contacts or text messages.
As far as the clothes some are to reveling, but didn't our parents say the same thing about 'our' style of dress, or music, or hair cuts? Really i think the teachers should worry about teaching and not about the latest jean style with holes in them. |

Old guy, You are always on here complaining about everything in education. The reason kids cannot have cell phones in class....see the following: 1. Constant interruption of class when cell phones are buzzing 2. Constantly text messaging friends. Kids have been caught text messaging test answers and also texting to meet a friend at a certain point in the school. This could be bad. They could be meeting for drugs, which is a HUGE problem. 3. Not paying attention, having them on their laps and not following the lessons and hearing vital parts to instruction. 4. The rule is they CAN have them on their person but NOT on...in case of an emergency.(read the handbook people) I read my child's handbook and also asked. The administration was very nice and said, "yes. They can have them, but just not turned on for the above reasons. TEACHERS WITH PHONES- Same rules apply. I haven't EVER heard of ANY teacher talking on a phone during class. What a fabrication that is. The kids are given more freedoms than most schools and they should feel lucky. As for teachers dressing poorly? Who are these teachers? Because when I go into the school I am treated with nothing but the upmost professionalism from everyone. I think the teachers dress great. Some of the teachers do teach shop and have to wear less fancier clothing. Wow. You people have a great school and a great staff. Why are you always complaining? Can't you ever be thankful for what you have old guy? Do you even have kids in school? Or are you an angry person that is mad because those teachers are great and make decent money? What IS your beef with constantly complaining about RC? My kids love it there. There are a few kids who are always in trouble with the law, etc., and those kids are always complaining and blaming their ills on someone else. So, get your facts correct like I have stated above. Teachers are protecting MY children and YOUR children every day and have their best interests at heart. The supposed phone on a teacher's desk is probably there in case something happens and they need help quickly. Braidwood residents pay the ultimate lowest property tax in this entire area, yet you seem to endlessly complain. Go north, where the teachers make 20 - 30 thousand dollars more a year and you will have a way, way higher property tax. quit complaining and start thanking. I think it's about time before we start to loose many of these fantastic teachers to schools up north. Many have already left. |
||||
If any of these "fantastic teachers" want to go...LET THEM TRY!!!! They will soon find out they are not quite the hot commodity they think they are. The truly excellent teachers will stay because they do have the best interest of our kids at heart. Those great ones will stay and will continue the fine traditon of education the R-C has known. |
||||
Wow. They ARE all of our GREATEST commodity! It's sad that you think that. The great ones have stayed and do have the best interests at heart. That's why they stayed. And then they have to put up with people like yourself who are always complaining and don't have your facts correct - like the cell phone facts. Do you have kids in school? You never answered that question. You should go to the school and be an aid, help out, talk to the kids about your job, interests hobbies. They love stuff like that. That's how you can contribute -But you aren't contributing on here with your misinformation and spreading wrong facts. Please do your research before you start posting untruths. I would suggest going and picking up a handbook, getting involved in the school, attending PAL meeting etc. That's what I did and it makes a difference. I love and support RCHS and the good they do for our kids. |

children don't need them.
|

I love and support RCHS as well. I have spent inordinate amounts of time supporting all my children, as well as many students at RCHS. I am fotunate that all my children graduated with honors, participated in many extra-curriculars and were pretty good kids as well. I have not posted any untruths, as you say. RCHS has many excellent teachers who do want the kids to succeed, but as with any organization, there are some who do not fit that description. Let me also suggest that some have stayed simply because of the outstanding pay, the amazing facilities, the great kids, the ongoing parental support, and up until this year, the 2 hours a day off. For some, the best interest of out students is not high on the list, although it may be there in some degree. |
||||
Sorry, I guess this really doesn't have to do with cell phones. I guess I got off topic a bit. |

They should have better grades now there is a new of cheating.

The whole policy needs to be adapted for the times. I think a cell phone is OK on the person (student or teacher) if it is powered down during class. Abusing the privelige, such as texting in class, should be subject to disciplinary measures. That goes for teachers as well as students - don't tell me teachers don't text during class time as I know better. In case of an emergency I WANT my child to have a phone. The office administrators have said to me, on the occasions when I have called to get a message to my child, they would do their best, but it really depends on the teacher reading e-mail. The school no longer uses the PA system to reach the teachers for certain things. So yes, my child does have a cell phone, powered down, with instructions to check it after school in case there are any changes for afternoon plans. This is all for my child's safety, my comfort level, and not to bother the office staff with any last minute issues.
