I am a little surprised that common sense doesn't tell us this. What goes in is what comes out. The other thing this points to is the fact the reason organic fed cattle have shit with higher mineral content is because organic feed has higher mineral content.

Why do people oppose large dairies? They are efficient and use less energy to produce nutrient rich milk to a growing population. There are fewer cows to produce more. I don't understand that people think the same amount of cows spread out into smaller dairies are better for the environment. Same amount of cows same air. Dairymen are the first stewards of the land. They protect the land so the land can be passed on to their children and grandchildren and so-on.

Have you ever been to an industrial dairy farm. Most of the cows pretty much live in the stalls where they are forced fed corn to fatten them, not their natural diet and forced to produce more milk so they can be milked more often than is natural. They wind up sick from the lack of fresh air and exercise and natural pasture diet, hence the antibiotic use. When they are all used up after a couple years it's off to the slaughter house. Mass consumption, mass production and greed make people justify some of the most awful things. |

Yes I have been on large dairies.I grew up on one. Seven days a week. I worked along side my father, mother, and brother. Cows are fed a variety of foods, among them is corn, alfalfa, oats, and minerals. For the most part cows only lie down to sleep in their stalls and are free to walk around, greet each other, and eat. Dairy families have been farmers for generations where grandparents teach their grandchildren their love of the land and farming and dairying. Did you know that their are tons of parasites in pasture grass along with noxious weeds, and other things that can kill animals. Cows that are producing milk are not allowed antibiotics. This is mandated by the federal government. That is due to allergic reactions to antibiotics. Their milk is tested everyday. Yes cows are used for milk and meat to feed our large and hungry population nutrient rich foods. Though for some reason I can't figure out the greed part of it. I don't know any dairy family that is making any money right now. And by the way, you cannot force feed a cow. |

It's gotta be cheaper than thrusting a half dozen men into space for less than nothing.

Think about the space program's carbon footprint both here on earth and in space. People in California blame the cow's burping and farting for global warming. When 30 years ago there were four times the amount of cows. Give me a barn full of warm burping cows instead of a barn full of belching busses. Pollution and global warming comes from chemicals and petroleum. But then Californians want their food to be cheap and from China or South America instead of locally grown and raised and therefore keep the dollars locally. Hummmm, more pollution for transportation.

That’s all very interesting but there’s no such thing as global warming. |

I agree but there are those who are pushing that agenda to get more regulations on the books.

Well there’s always something. In a hundred years none of it will matter. |

Not to us but laws and regulations live on forever.

What a hoot -- they should start with congress -- it's been full of milch cash cows since the time of Reagan at least. And they have been spreading the manure pretty thick, viz. Iraq...
http://news.yahoo.com/s/ap/20090503/ap_on_go_... And on the "rebranding" of the GOP -- they just have to get away from those peaky white hoods with eyes and the swastika armbands favored by their faithful |

If a cow is only allowed to eat what is available then that is what it is forced to eat. I have the utmost respect for dairy farms such as Strauss Family Farms and Organic Valley Family Farms. |

If a cow only has grass in a pasture to eat isn't that force feeding the cow? Grass is the only thing available to eat. I am sure that Strauss Family Farms and Organic Valley Family Farms supplement their cows diet with organic feed and minerals. It would be hard to feed a cow totally on pasture during a drought or if the ground is frozen. Even cows in Europe and in are housed in barns during the winter months as are the cows here. They don't have access to pasture during that time.

Okay, I'm really not trying to have an argument, but if you recall, what I said was that cows are force fed corn, which is not a normal diet for cows. In other words forced to eat corn. I never suggested that Organic Valley or Strauss don't supplement their pasture diet. As a matter of fact I have toured their farms and I happen to know that they do. |

So do I, as I was raised on a dairy. Corn is fed as a mixed ration along with cotton seed, barley, oats, minerals, vitamins, and a variety of other grains. Cows, to do their best, need a variety of foods to eat. Cows love corn. To them it tastes like candy. I don't know of any dairy farmer that feeds straight corn to a cow. Corn does not have all the nutrients that a cow needs but corn does provide energy. Corn by itself would not provide the roughage needed to to chew cud. Cows usually are also fed silage (ie. grass) or alfalfa for the roughage. By would you profess to know what a normal diet is for a cow? I have worked with cows on a daily basis. They are wonderful creatures but they are not pets. From the beginning of civilization cows have been domesticated to provide milk and meat for mankind.

Teresa L- You're lying when you said there were 4 times the amount of cows in CA 30 years ago. You're also lying when you say that Californians are the ones benefiting from the milk production in their state. A lot of the milk produced in CA is exported oversees to Japan and China. Don't try to sugar coat the dairy business. The corporate families in CA do it for the money, not because they're patriot or altruistic. The lobby the CA govt hard to get tax breaks and get favorable environment laws passed. They're not saints, just capitalists. Which is not a popular thing right now. |

What is a corporate family? Tell me what dairy in California is not owned by a family? My dairy is owned by my family. Family to me means grandparents, children and grandchildren. Corporate means selling shares over the market. So which dairy does that. We are all FAMILY owned. All we, as dairy families, want to make a living in the business we love. Less than 10% is being exported to China. I, as a dairy person, like to make a living providing a wholesome food for my state. Our price is set by the state. That is something I am not ashamed of.
