Teen mom kicked off school bus for feeding infant

Bus drivers are in charge of enforcing the rules, but when 16 year old Shelby Rayburn brought out a bottle to feed her crying seven month old son Gavin, she was told that was against the rules.

Assine-typical non=thinking knee-jerk reaction by the bus driver. I would imagine that a child with special health needs would be at greater risk if not fed properly than a minimal risk of choking while taking a bottle. There just has to be an intelligent plan for this child. and Kudos to mom for continuing her education, esp. while facing necessary and needles barriers.

this is rediculous; a baby does not have the timing of an adult or older child. If a child is hungry feed him any where, or anytime. What are we becoming? no morals what so ever. How do you have the nerve to tell someone, you can not feed your baby. It is not a safety issue it is a stupid issue.

This story is two weeks old and has been told to you sensationalized. The teen was given a choice by the driver that they would pull over and she could feed the child or she could be taken back to the school. She chose to go back to school. Additionally, this is a free service to the student, as well as the free day care she receives. For the details, check out the story on WWSB. They reported she had a choice. This program has been available for 10 years. It is cost prohibitive to run a bus for each mother. This one complainer is going to ruin it for those who may need it in the future. The Girls parents should have been parenting before they became grand parents. In the face of future Budget cuts caused by the passing of the property tax amendment I will support any school board that wants to
cut any of these non-required services. Such as free child care and free bus service with baby seats. Ask the mothers there. I bet they fed their kids before they left on a trip and special needs children they made arrangements
to accomadate and care for their Children. The Schools arent the problem. People believing they are owed something are the problem.

You have got to kidding me, but the sad part is I know you are not. Grats to the mom for standing up for her kids and his needs, as well as continuing her education as said above. Sounds like some rules need to change and that driver should be suspended for poor judgment at the least. That is a long ride to expect a baby with special needs to sit through.
It's not like her feeding her child was affecting anyone else on the bus. Another reason public schools in Florida suck! Homeschool all the way!

This is sad. I agree Kudo's to the Mom for finishing her education!!

Any mom knows that trying to feed your child prior to going some where does not always work! And still if it takes a while for her to get dropped off at her home that does not mean her son is going to stay satisfied till she gets home!

Kudos again to the mom for Actually Trying To take care of her Baby. We need more people now a days to actually Take care of the babies in the world and not just let them be-that is why they are babies because they are dependant on their Parents to Take care of them!!

Ashamed for the bus driver that even had the nerve to say no to a baby!!

What would you do if your baby was crying...you would do anything to please him...and say the baby keeps crying, dont you think the bus driver and other students might get a little mad?

hello i think that was wrong what the bus driver did. why i say that is because you can not make a baby eat if they dont want to eat. So when they are ready then you feed them. Plus if the girl would have let her baby cry the whole ride home the driver would have said she need to shut her baby up so i think he should have let her feed her baby and chill out and drive the bus.

If the bus had a wreck while the mother was feeding the baby and the baby was hurt or God forbid the mother had the baby out of the car seat holding it while feeding and the baby flew through the air, the bus driver would have been fired and the school district sued. The bus driver followed the rules and did the right thing. A baby can wait to be fed. Th
There are rational reasons for not changing or feeding a baby while the bus is moving! If she truly cared about her baby she would put it up for adoption so that it is raised in a stable home instead of daycare 8 hours a day by an unwed teenage mother.

God forbid that people exercise good judgement on rules. Just obey them, regardless of how stupid or inappropriate they are.

Its a real shame when adults trade in common sense for a degree. There are exceptions to every rule. If we make an exception for her we will have to make.......sound familiar. Case by case basis, remember the human factor and show some compassion, that would really be a lesson by example for our young people.

Who in the hell are you to say that she should place that baby for adoption!? She is doing what is best for the child which is stay with the mother. She obviously cares about the child and is doing her best which is a lot more than even some adoptive parents do for the children that they have.

I was a very young mother like this girl. I rode a county funded bus to and from a school for pregnant teens. We were allowed to feed our babies on the bus. If we needed to change or burp them we either waited or the bus driver would pull over and give us 5 minutes. It's hard enough to have a baby at any age, let alone being a teen trying to get an education AND be a parent.

Shame on you for saying she should give the baby up. Maybe your mother should have given you up!!!!

Shame on that busdriver!!!!!!!!!!Amazing what people will decide when given a bit of authority. School board needs to rethink this issue big time. As if the teen mom does not have enought to deal with, now she has an ignorant bus driver telling her when she can feed her baby.

You should really listen to the issue at hand. The baby was hungry. It's not like she took him out of the car seat and started to breast feed him. This, of course would have endangered her and the baby had the bus driver had an accident. It's a dang bottle. I, too am a teen parent and take offense to your comment about her parents. They didn't stand over her during the act to tell her to keep her legs closed just like you don't watch your children 24/7. I can't believe you never did ANYTHING your parents would disapprove of. As far as the "program" they've been around longer than 10 years. My son is now 17 and about to graduate. Yes, the bus and day care were "free" to me, but my parents pay taxes to provide this as I do now. There is no rational reason why a student should have to be on a bus for almost 3 hours, let alone a baby, so therefore, at least drinks should be allowed. I personally don't believe they "owed" me anything except an education. The "extras" just allowed me to finish with my class.
