2 I would support a campaign to force this guy to sell and pay reparations. |

1 I loved the place, but always thought that things could have been better. Hopefully things work out for the old place and someone with a ton of cash would put the love into it the brookdale deserves! |

I knew when this guy bought the hotel it was the beginning of the end.

This guy is a piece of feces and he had it coming to him. I knew the person who died there last month and there is no reason that should have happened. There was not even a "no trespassing" sign up in that area (that should have been securely boarded up in an establishment that serves alcohol). Bravo to this arrest!

1 Good concept. I would like to add that every homeowner who picks up an illegal for day work, risks having there house burglarized soon after. If you pick up a day-worker on the weekend, don't give them any personal information, like where you work or your work hours, as they will pass the information on to their associates who do the weekday burglaries. If they know you are only home on the weekends, they know you're not home on weekdays. |

Mexicans are not the only folks robbin' in this wacked town... Go drive by the homeless shelter near Costco and check out the tweekers/crackheads&methhe ads with their $700 bikes. Santa Cruz is in need of some serious help and fast. And it isn't coming from the same ol' families that have been in city gov't over the past 25-40 years. Change is needed and fast. People complain non-stop on these comments pages... But that is all they do, talk....

I wanted to believe some of the first criticisms of Sanjiv Kakkar were off-base, or that a relatively young guy had made a few missteps. But in hindsight, it appears he's got a long track record of playing things fast and loose, and cutting whatever corners he can get away with.
Bet he's over-leveraged and things are catching up to him. |

This guy didn't have the capital to afford running or restoring the aging resort,he was hamstrung from the start. The RE bubble burst at the very same time that he purchased the lodge, and like so many immigrant hotelier families they were cutting corners that would not be a serious crime in their home countries. His constant violations of common sense and his blinding ambition to improve the place with low cost, handiman help instead of ponying up to get the work done right, got him where he is today!!

1 At least workers would get paid on time and the fires at the lodge would end. |

My guess if he had membership with any of the local chambers or calchamber. He'd be a little more cozy with the DA's office. In which case the legal consequences would be much more lighter, if any,and no media attention.

Arrested??! For not having Workers' Compensation insurance?!?! Good heavens. No wonder our jails are overflowing. The things mentioned in this article are all CIVIL OFFENSES; not CRIMES! Wrong? Yes. Crimes?? NO! They all enjoy civil remedies and that's where it belongs.
What a waste of police power. Total waste. But, having said that, Brookdale is a death trap. I tripped and fell over a big tree root and about broke my neck. |

You are correct. We have to vote for change. Nothing will change if WE don't make it happen! Let your voice be heard at the polls! Start with getting rid of Madrigal."What a maroon" as Bugs Bunny would say. |

You are an idiot.....The working people have rights. I have seen this coming for some time. I knew several workers at this place and they were not all illegals. Some very nice white office and bar people. Never got paid. The guy is a bad person and was never friendly to local folks....wrong thing to do...locals keep his business going in the winter. Keeping people from getting their belongings after the fire is in-humane. I hope he gets shut out/shut down with all this and see how it feels. He is a loser from another country that came here and thinks that he can do what he wants. Totally disrespecful to our country. As far as the fire...I bet he thought it would get fixed for free with insurance. When tobacco, arms and fire comes and investigates it is usually for something big. Think about it. Fish and game has been up his butt since the fish died and I bet the employee was told to dispose of that chemical in the river.Folks from another country don't care about this. It is only food. That is why I don't donate to supplying food to other countries. We need food and jobs here. This guy is not helping. As far as the guy dieing, he was a local. I hope they sue for the whole place. Now blast me if you will feel better. |

1 I will blast you for this: "nice white office and bar people." um-hmmm. |

Yes....folks left over from the Gilberts and got let go later for nothing. He only wants family or illegals working there. I guess he thought they would work for free. |
