no, turtles are reptiles. amphibians include frogs, toads and salamanders. amphibians can breathe underwater where their skin acts like gills. turtles can't do this, they must surface for air.

This pond is one of our favorite plates to hang out - read a book on the picnic table nearby. Just down the street from my house... I guess I should volunteer for this too !!

Minor correction... I'm somewhat wrong about my definition of Amphibians above. Amphibians have a juvenile aquatic stage, like tadpoles, that have gills and live completely underwater, then mature into air breathers. While adult frogs may absorb some oxygen under water, they still need to breathe air.
And in fact, there's some oddball amazonian turtle that has gill-like structures being studied now which may allow it to absorb oxygen from the water, but they are still reptiles. |
