Seems the only thing important anymore at our schools is ball?

At this year's Internationl Science and Engineering Fair, a 15 year old winner developed a new method to detect pancreatic cancer! That didn't make the news. But if some kid can throw a ball or whatever, he's a hero! They put his face on the news, give him scholarships, popularity.... Welcome to our world.

You are exactly right....seems like we play school and teach ball.

FYI...that 15 yr old also competes on his schools white water rafting team. Kids can be both smart and athletic. Idk which school you are referring to, but you can't say Booneville doesn't put education first. We are a top academic school every year. Plus, we have good sports teams. Clearly, anyone who complains about Booneville just doesn't like sports.

There is nothing wrong with sports, and nobody said there was!
The point is that sports are blown way out of proportion.
And no school is being singled out, not by me anyway.
Take our local universities. A LOT of their money comes from sporting events, especially football. It's not all ticket sales, but, in some way connected to sports.
The result? More money is spent ON sports. And if you ask people around the college town about the college, you'll hear "Go Rebels!" or "Go Dawgs!" or whatever. Never mind the MANY very successful academic graduates.
It just seems like we should be saying, "Have you heard about John Smith? That dude's gonna win a Nobel prize someday! And he's a great ball player too!"
Instead, we're focusing on the sports and anything else is incidental.
Here's a tidbit for you: Tim Tebow's Wikipedia page is very lengthy, particularly his college years. What's missing? HIS MAJOR! He received his bachelor's degree in Family, Youth and Community Sciences in 2009. Wikipedia doesn't even mention that.
Again, let me say this: There's nothing wrong with sports. I just think our priorities are a little misplaced.

Prentiss county should have 3 schools Booneville city school then either a prentiss north and prentiss south or east and west. Maybe we could get to two schools the city school and a county school. It would be far better for the kids. More money for academics and more for the "sports" How about a black school and a white school?

Not taking away at all from the academic side of things that yes school is to learn a great education from. But when you get down to it thinking ball has took over the schools in a way yes I have to agree but my reasoning is that ball is to many the only reason they come to school. To some it's the only thing that they haven't dropped out. To be a part of something cause in some of the schools some of the children don't have a home life and sports is their life. Some it gives a purpose for. And with the requirements of having academically to be able to play in sports they have to do school work to play! But no doubt education many times isn't the spotlight of the news in things but maybe sports is once again by saying that to some sports is the only reason they are still in school and to make the paper that is a highlight of them actually being recognized for something!

I agree it has taken over. But without sports some kids wouldn't go to school. It also teaches discipline and teamwork. However the education should not be compromised to acomplish a successful sports team. If a student can't learn education then I don't think they should learn sports.
