The 99 and 00 teams were the same. All juniors in 99. A very impressive team.

1994-First district baseball title in over 20 years
-Neil Terry, Brandon Lynch, Dewey Peters, Ron Campbell, and a slew of other great seniors.
-96 & 97-back to back district titles, undefeated in regular and post season play in district.
-96 were beat out in the region by the eventual champions and dominate team for the next 4 years; Fleming-Neon.
-96 had Mike Allen, Larry Turner, Shane Bishop, Chris Shouse, Randy Osborne and all the 97 team on the roster.
-97 were a serious contender for the region and were beat out by Breathitt by 1 run in an extra innings heart breaker in the semi-finals at Knott County Central.
-Defeated Powell, Lee, Buckhorn, Breathitt, Leslie in season just to name a few.
-Best overall record in Owsley baseball or basketball history,(Dough correct me if I am wrong, 26-6-1)
-Built the team from the ground up through youth league and community support. Put lights on the field and an electronic scoreboard with the help of the Bobrowskis' and through community support of the team.
-Big thanks to Mill Hardy, he was always there working hard and making it happen behind the scenes; mowing grass, raking the infield, organizing summer and fall leagues, working hard in all areas to make sure we had a place and a time to showcase our hard work and talent.
Neil Taylor, Travis Spencer, Chris Hardy, Brent Lynch, Micah & Nathan Stallard, Greg Frost, Robbie Bishop, Bo Gabbard, Travis McIntosh and a ton of talented back up players; Stephen Phillips, Jason Mays, David Price, Jeremy Moore, just to name a few.
Top to bottom, always working hard, always striving and never, ever giving up! The greatest sports team of Owsley sports history.

I had a pretty big role in that 1994 team!!!! That team was stacked with talent. I remember the region game that year at Knott Co against Hazard. Several players showed up high on acid. Blew it for all of us. The baseball teams from 94-97 will never be matched. I'd put them up against any of those recent Lee Co teams.

You are correct in all areas and I sill blame the late call of the Breathitt game to bring in another pitcher! We should have won that game, still cant get it out of my head to the day.

#1. Boys' Basketball 1983 (29-5) Regional Runner-Up, Mike Turner, Caleb Dean, Phillip Dooley, Joe Spencer, Gary Bowling, Mike Moore, Rickey Wilson, Greg Combs.
#2. Girls' Basketball 1988 (23 Wins) Regional Runner-Up, Susan Stepp, Amber Spencer, Vanessa Marshall, Vicki Marshall, Tracy Marshall, Dawn Burch, Fancis Holliday, Kim Little.
#3. Boys' Basketball 1990 (25 Wins) Class A State Runner-Up.
#4. Boys' Basketball 2000 (24 Wins) Class A State Semi-Finalists.
#5. Baseball 1997.
#6. Baseball 1980 Regional Runner-Up to eventual State Runner-Up Hazard. Upset Cumberland in the regional semi-finals. Jimmy Brandenburg, Matthew Oliver, Kirk Shoemaker....?
#7. 1982- Boys' Basketball -(22 Wins) lost in the regional semi-finals in O.T. to M.C. Napier. Roy Neeley and Greg Gabbard were the seniors on this team (see '83 above).
#8. 1992 - Boys' Basketball -(19 Wins) lost on a last second shot to Dilce Combs in the regional semi-finals.
#9. 1988- Boys' Basketball -(23 Wins) lost to Buckhorn in semi-finals. Buddy Cornwell, Tim Marshall, Spot Bowling, Jeff Moore, Harold Creech, Teddy Johnson.
#10. 1962- Boys' Basketball - First Owls team to advance to regional semi-finals. Paul Smith's senior year.
#11. 1985- Boys' Basketball -(20 Wins) upset M.C. Napier in the regional semi-finals before losing to Breathitt Co. in the finals. Joe Spencer, Joey Dunn, Tim Bobrowski, Buddy Cornwell, Dan Marshall, Tim Marshall.
***1994 Baseball team - loaded with talent, 14th region baseball was probably at it's peak from the late '80s to about 1999.
***1991 Boys' Basketball team was 14-2 when Brandon Noe went down with a knee injury in a game against Letcher. This was the most "talented" team in the history of the school, in my opinion. They lost to Jenkins in O.T. in the class a region, were district runner-up, and lost on a last second shot in the regional semi-finals to Breathitt Co. Had Noe not got hurt this team would have probably won the all a, district, and region. Scott Wilson, Craig Marshall, Paul Green, Jason Wilson, Neil Terry, Jason Cope, Jason Roberts.
*1989 & 1992 Baseball Teams reached the regional semi-finals.'89 team lost 8-7 to Breathitt Co. & the '92 team lost 13-9 to Buckhorn.

Yea,'Coach' Bobrowski didn't not make the best decisions, none of the time, haha. Breahtitt was tough but didn't have the heart we did, just got the best of us at the most important time :) I have trouble sleeping at night when I think back on it.

BTW, Class A tournaments aren't as important as the real deal, if we would had class A baseball, we would had probably won the STATE title or came damn close!

The region was stacked in 1997; Leslie, PCC, Hazard, Whitesburg, Buckhorn, Breathitt, Fleming-Neon and us were all tough and had great pitching staffs with tough offenses.

All of the team got along and had the hard work, hustle and determination that has yet to be matched.

Dakota, Travis, Jeremy, Adam and the rest of the very talented basketball team of the late 90's worked hard and were a great team; big win against that very very talented and proven Corbin win put em on the map, along with their success in the Class A.

Mike Turner, Phillip Dooley and that bunch were great or so I hear, but dunking in a game doesn't make em' the greatest or even a region final.

1997 won 2 district titles, matched only by Dakota and Travis' team.

Moose, Bryan, Harold and the others were great as well.

Would like to tell ya alittle more about the 1983 Owls since some of may not remember us...the summer of 1982 we were invited to the Leslie Co. Inv. Tournament...coming off the 1981-82 season as 56th district champs we proceeded to sweep the Leslie Co. Tournament against teams who were later in the 1983 Div.#1 state tournament when there was only one state tournament and no 3-point line. Then we attended Transylvania basket ball camp with 10 varsity players. They split us into 2 teams for both conferences...When we left on Friday both teams had won conference champs. First time one school had won both against the best talent in Kentucky. We followed with a 29 win season with most wins by a 10-15 point margin...very few close games....dominating the District and at Regionals till the final game where the referees literally took the game out of our hands and haneded it to Breathitt...Yes we could dunk anywhere...but what made us special was every varsity player was a starter quality player...I have friends throughout the District and Region in high school sports and after 25 years they still remember us and say(their words not mine)..."Owsley County will never see another team like that one...we knew when the OCHS-Maroon & White rolled into town we were beat, we just hoped it wasn't too bad." Everyone will always have their favorite team, but honestly there will never be another 1983 Owls Basketball team.By the way Mike Turner won the Billy Jay Hearne award twice against some very good players and was voted #1st team all-state...yes, he was THAT good. I had to practice against him every day...thanks for all the memories post on the forum...really enjoyed reading it.

Yea, those refs, always taking the games from Owsley, haha. Why can't we all admit that when you lose, you lose?

Great team I am sure, but I am soooo sick and tired of hearing how everytime Owsley loses, the refs took the game, it's so discouraging. And yes, it's impossible to have another ANY team. It's sad that Mike didn't have the humility to use his athletic talent to get a quality college education and really make his self an example to truly lead by. Otherwise, it's just another sad story about a once promising talent, going to waste.

Let's make it happen again with a great youth program that promotes values such as; hard work, dedication, honesty, humility, etc. Not letting the selfish and negative attitudes to get in the way of progress and success on and OFF the court.

I was at that game and yes the ref's took it from Owsley that night. I'm sure that was not the only game that was decided by the ref's. It happens all the time.

And for the record, summer leagues mean nothing.

I am taking away from the Greatness of that team, God knows I have heard stories and lores from way back about the great athletic Mike Turner, Caleb Dean and Phillip Dooley dominate presence in the paint, Joe Spencer's youth and talent and an all around great team with a hard nosed Charlie Turner as coach.

I want to see it happen AGAIN! Why do Knott, Breathitt and Perry most of the time have good teams? Because they want it more than anything. They organize and train their young to win! They don't use excuses and if they do, they lose.

I know what it takes to win and I know why you lose. It's not the refs, they have little or nothing to do with any of it. I know some games are miscalled but if that is our one shinning moment, that we were sooo close and had it taken from us? What does that say? It says, you get up and do it AGAIN, no excuses. And it's a shame they couldn't had walked across the floor at Rupp.

When the 2000 boys basketball team were beat by a lesser Knott Central in the Semi-finals, even though they were rated #1 in the mountains; 13th, 14th and 15th regions by the local AP press, did they make excuses? No.

When the 97' baseball team were beaten in a heart breaker extra innings battle with the deep talented Breathitt baseball team (that included the great football talent of Tim Barnett and Phillip Watts that won back to back state championships) did they make excuses..... no.
They packed up the equipment, whipping the blood and tears off their faces and congraulated each other on the bus ride home that night. That's how you lose, with humility. And it's the same way you win.

If we want another great team, work hard and long and never give up. Sick of excuses and reasons why we didn't win, I want to hear HOW WE WON.

You can't take away from that team, as much as you apparently want to ...The benchmark has been set. And I do believe we showed great humility by packing our gear and riding that long ride home, not tearing down the gym or calling for heads to roll, we had half a state doing that for us... and if it were a "few" missed calls we could have easily overcame those...but we kept playing knowing what was coming and still only loss by a few points. You can't understand...you are hearing the stories and lore for a reason...and it extends far beyond Owsley County. I wish you the best in your attempt to get another winning team at OCHS...

I am NOT taking away from that team, if you can't fill in the typos, then I don't know what to say. Do you understand that you said 'they took it from us' in your last post. My attempt? As though it's impossible to replicate that season. I am SICK of hearing about how we were sooooo close and blah blah blah. And ever since I have heard about how it was took. You just said it yourself for God's sake, please. No wonder the rest of the region considers Owsley a joke in sports, because even our 'best' team has an excuse story of how those nasty, dirty refs took it from us, even in front of Joe B. Hall in Fairce C. Woods coliseum.

And what sorta heads are you going to get to roll? When a game is over, it's over. I watched a stacked Breathitt Co. get a game 'took' from them from a much less talented team in 2003 at Powell County by Powell and then a very very talented PCC team for the region. Point is, when you get a game 'took', it means that they may had put the ole' 5-2 zone on you but you still lost. I am sick of hearing about the story of how Owsley was robbed of their glory. If you want to talk about how great that team was, then do so, but don't bring up an excuse, it's weak and shows no humility my friend.

I would have loved 2 hae saw that..... I have not one bit of doubt that they were great cause I heard the stories. It made me wanna play! It mad me wanna dive on the fresh sealed court! I wouldn't think for one second that I wouldn't scarifice my head or anyhting to go after a loose ball. I thank BUDDY CORNWELL and TIM BOB! For everything they had taught me. Thanks for memories and I wish that we could get thimgs back up and running again. In every sport. Owsley players in any sport wanted it all and that was great just 2 have a few players and the size of school we had.
Thanks, Travis Spencer

The 1983 boys' basketball team would have more than likely beaten any OCHS team prior or since.
Turner is arguably the best athlete ever produced at OCHS. It was nothing to see him go up in traffic and dunk with two hands, and he played good hard defense and was more concerned about rebounding than scoring. Bowling did a good job at the point and could score when needed. Dean was 6'3'1/2 but had the wing span of someone 6'7'. He shut down Ginnan from Lee Co. in the district finals that year - he also had a nice dunk in that game off the baseline. Dooley played hard defense, got rebounds, and would get a few garbage baskets every game off of off. rebounds. Spencer was only a soph. but he could shoot the rock, and as a sr. led a team not expected to do much to the regional finals. Combs, Moore, Wilson, and Strong were all seniors on this team and would have started on a lot of teams in the 14th region in 1983. It was a good time to be a fan / student at OCHS, gym was always packed and the outcome was usually in favor of the home team. An unselfish group that played good defense...what more could you ask for?I think Pulaski County was the only team to come to Owsley Co. and win that season. They were led by Arthur Hanson (Reggie's older brother).
