Oak Island is OK - I

Yea, Its a great place to take your kids so the locals can call them names and treat you like second class citizens. Yea, Oak Island is ok. If you are deaf and can not hear the names the staff at the ice cream shop and the local diner calls you.After visiting oak island for the past 30+ yrs, we will not be returning next yr for our annual 2 month vacation. we have rented a nice beach front house at carolina beach where the locals seem to be thrilled that people are spending their vacation money there and it is keeping them in jobs. They need to teach the staff at the businesses at oak island that if it wasnt for vistors, they wouldnt have a job.

I totally agree. I am tired of people putting us down as a whole, just for a few bad seeds, which every community has. Maybe people are rude to visitors who are rude to them! Oak Island is a wonderful place. I wouldn't want to live any place else!!!!!!!!

Wow I hope you do not meet any rude people in Carolina Beach. Those of us old timers have made lots of friends from old time visitors.Have you let the owner of this establishment know what happened. We do depend on your dollars I and always try to say thank you as I collect them. Good Luck.

Hi,

This is Joe who made the original post and I felt compelled to sign up and register since I am now a "very" proud home owner on OI.

I find it funny to see that the OI pundit is happy with Carolina Beach. When we searched beach property, we considered CB. However, once we saw and experienced the scene, it was frightening and we were not prepared to consider a tattoo parlor or game room as the highlight of our weekend.

Needless to say, we are happy as new "part-time" residents on OI and we will make sure others discover the benefits and make OI a destination. The locals have gone out of their way to make us feel welcome and help us beyond any expectations.

You were offended??? GOOD!!!!!!!!!! Then you know how we felt being referred to as terroist then dont you. You know how we felt when we were left waiting forever for food at the sea food place while we watched others come in, call the staff by name, order the same thing as we did and get their food before we did and finish eating and gone before ours was even served. It wasnt you who left a 8.00 tip for the waitress at another place we ate at and over heard her refer to me as a tight ass as I walked over to pay our 10.95 tab. AND YOU WERE OFFENEDED!!!!!!!!! Try walking in our shoes for a little bit MISS OFFENDED. And guess what! We already booked and paid for our 3 week vacation next yr at CAROLINA BEACH where the locals are happy for our business that is keeping them in a job. OFFENDED??? Damn right we were and I bet you would be too if you were treated this way!

Yes were did mention this to the manager of one place and was informed that the waitress who we had issues with was his niece. She referred to me as tight ass AFTER I left her a 8.00 tip. I hear her as I went to pay our 10.95 bill. Nice tip for her doing nothing except pouring our drinks and she was very rude and ungrateful for that!

May i ask what restaraunt you were at? There are always restaraunts in a town that people don't like. Just because it's in a beach city doesn't mean the enter city sucks.

I agree. If Carolynn was so upset over the restaurant, then why not name it. Every community has places you should stay away from. Maybe in the future, you should visit EVERY restaurant in the area, and then make a comment on that particular area as a whole, and not base your opinion on one incident. Did you ever think that some restaurants have call ahead sit down orders. I have done that several times since the wait can be long in the summer. I'd like to see your post after you have been to Carolina beach. I am sure you will find something wrong there too.

I am the leader of our MYF group at church. We always bring our 4-6 graders to oak island for a week in the summer. This past summer will be our last visit to oak island. Our children do not need to hear the "F" word coming out of the mouths of teenagers who work at the dairy queen. We went there 3 times and all 3 times we heard the same thing. Our group this year had 5 handicapped children . These same teen agers at the dairy queen made fun of them the last time we were there. There is no call for this and it is unacceptable! I just wonder what their parents would think if they heard them talking, using the f word all the time and making fun of these children.
we have found another area to go next year. I hate to change after coming to oak island for the past yrs but this was the worst trip we have ever taken.

Actually Im pretty shocked you had a bad time there. You have definitely proven how rude you can be with your posts.

The Fish House has an extremely LONG wait during the summer. People line up about an hour before the restaurant even opens. Several people call in a reservation.
&& unfortunately you were probably told so many great things about the Fish House... when indeed it's not one of the best places to eat.
If you ever decide to come back, Im would be glad (and Im sure others in this forum) to tell you about some of the best restaurants in this area.
