Hey boss, I work for you from 8 to 5. You pay me to do a service during these hours. And when I leave your office, MY TIME IS MY OWN AND I'LL DO AS I PLEASE. I DO NOT WORK FOR YOU AFTER 5, I DO NOT REPRESENT YOUR COMPANY EITHER. I'M ON MY TIME NOW. MINE!!!! You wan't to pay me over a 24 hour period, then I'll consider your BS. I have a real problem with companies that think they own you and can tell you what you can and cannot do on Your Own Time!!!!
I just wanted to give you something to think about. Say for example one of your children's teachers or the principal at their school, was arrested for having Child Porn on their home computer. Do you think YOU should just say, "Hey, he is doing that on his own time and not when he/she is at work. It's none of our business what he/she does on their own time."
Don't you think you would be concerned? Don't you think you would want to know?

What I'm trying to say is even though you are not at work, you are still representing them (the company or business).
What you say, can be used against you.
What you say and do on the Internet can also be used against you.

Of course it is protected speech in priniple. Posting your speech on the internet does not give it any special characteristic that diffirentiates it from any other medium. What matters is the content and context of the speech. Hyperbol, no matter what the content is, is protected. But if the content causes others damaged in a specific context, then it is not free speech

I know a young girl that got fired from her job working with the elderly for what she said on her Facebook. She said she was getting tired of the patients hitting her and that some of the RN's were lazy. They actually told her she was being fired for what she said on Facebook.
what she did was a HIPAA violation. her employer is compelled to fire her under federal law, or face fines up to $250K per "incident". Expressing personal information about your job, your coworkers, particularly in a medical setting is just stupid on her part. Then talking about patients in a derogatory manner is complete employment suicide. If she needs to "vent" about work, she should get a diary....where no one reads it except her....
unless she has a snoopy friend or mother, it harms no one....
what she did was malign/libel her employer and the other co-workers. Talking about patients is a complete breach of confidentiality....NOTHING is to be spoken about a patient, their family, etc.
she got what she deserved. lesson learned...
keep your mouht shut when it comes to patients and families and other co workers....duh!
think it through...
if it had been your grandmother whom this person was jabbering about in a derogatory way on facebook for all to read, would you be okay with that?
maybe your grandma has alzheimer's, and doesn't know she's slugging her care givers....how would you feel knowing that she was talking about a family member this way? or, what if one of the RN's was your sister or brother, and she declared they were lazy?
What if many other people in your circle/town know where she works and knows your sister works there....are they going to draw a conclusion about your sister from her postings?
what if your sister decides to apply for a job somewhere else, and is denied, because this "friend" instigated a reputation about your sister via her facebook account...
NOW DO YOU GET HOW GOSSIP IS SO HURTFUL???

Why do you feel the need to be so unpleasant to Foxy? She was commenting on-topic, gave an example of an incident she knew about. She is not party to the incident, she did not gossip or post anything on Facebook relating to this issue. Your comments would be welcomed as interesting and helpful if you could control your malicious attitude.
And no, I do not know Foxylady away from Topix, but feel it is my responsibility to comment when I see you abusing her, Orphanannie.

well, free...where was i unpleasant? i am merely stating reality of why her "friend" was fired... i didn't say it was her, my last line was in reference to gossip in general...as in , "now do you see how gossip is so hurtful...etc."
seems to me you are taking it to a personal level, when there was no personal level given...
but if you want to take it personal, I'd be happy to oblige you...
what exactly are you adding to the conversation here, hmmmm?

i never once pointed a finger at foxy...and if you can READ, the post clearly says HER, as in HER friend...not HER as in FOXY...

Well, there you go....you were doing great, until your last line. Sheesh, what is it with you? I always said, you are a very intelligent person, and you know we agree on many things. But on this, we disagree.
I do have an opinion to add to the conversation....but every time I type it out, I delete it. Same goes for the immigration forum. I dunno, lately, I just don't feel like my old self, guess I'd rather read than post.

someday you may learn that you get what you give. you engaged me, remember? you attacked me with "why are you always so mean to foxy bullshit" and how it's YOUR RESPONSIBILITY to do something about it...
well, honey, if you're going to come at me with your personal daggers out and set in attack mode, take your lumps...
there was nothing in my post attacking foxy at all, and you decided to take it to a personal level and hammer me with it...
it's on you. if you don't like being a bitch, then stop being one.

I engaged you, I didn't attack you. Is it impossible for you to discuss without attacking? That was my point! No one is hammering you....really, try to take a more positive outlook, not everyone is out to get you.

FYI, my friend said nothing derogatory about the patients or the nurses. She was being hit by some of the patients and a nurse or two were lazy. She didn't name names, so just exactly WHO was being hurt by her comments? She gave NO "personal information" about anyone. She did NOTHING wrong. Do you really expect anyone to believe that professional caregivers don't bitch about the rigors of their job?

Thanks Free, but I expect nothing less from OA. She just has a nasty disposition unless, of course, when it's a poster who pats her on the back for every nasty post she makes to another poster.
Thanks again for speaking up...:)

Plain and simple ORPHANANNIE it was the TONE of your post that gave your true intent away. I also got the impression that you thought the "friend" was actually ME and therefore your comments WERE being AIMED at me. If Free sensed the same thing I feel my impressions were correct. There was NO "conversation" going on OA you were definitely reading me the riot act! And now, just because Free expressed her opinion you're offering to take her on now? Sheeeesh.....

FL, the fact that she did her bitching ON LINE on a venue that can be accessed by just about anyone with saavy, is the problem.
calling nurses lazy, even if it's true, is considered unprofessional in the ranks, and is cause for discipline. comments about patients hitting, etc, is a breach of confidentiality, eventhough she didn't name names, or divulge her place of employment. it is not only a reflection on her workplace, but on the profession she represents...and THAT is why she was fired.
most medical facilities now take these sorts of things VERY SERIOUSLY. So seriously, in fact, that usually on day one of employment, the expectation is spelled out in black and white and shown to you in MEMO form, and you are required to sign an "confidentiality" agreement stating that you understand HIPAA guidelines. even if she never signed such a document, the rule applies if they recieve medicare dollars....it's the law...and she breached it by posting a rant about her employer, the clients, and her coworkers ON LINE...it was a stupid mistake...and one, she hopefully will learn from.
like I said, if she needs to vent, she should get a diary. she should keep her friendships separate from her working relationships, and watch how she says things...
FACEBOOK isn't the place to vent about patients' behavior, or co-workers....
