In an Open Letter from Martha Vaughan, in a tribute to her son Stevie Ray Vaughan, Stevie's mother wrote poignantly about her son's life, his mercurical success, his painful addiction to alcohol and drugs, and his deliverance from them through turning to Jesus Christ as his Savior, healer and deliverer.

She included a snip from Stevie Ray's private journal that included part of this deliverance experience;

.........."God...I pray that I be cleansed/washed in the blood of Jesus Christ. Born again. I pray that I may be of use to you as you see fit. Help me that I may do my part. Amen." .........."God has been very good to me. He is good to all life. The willingness to try to work on my health is another and I am grateful for this opportunity." .........."Altho I can get confused about life and it's lessons, I can say that I am trying very hard to learn. I can see that I am learning how to care for others and for myself. Slowly sometimes, but surely nevertheless. I can play beautiful music. This is a gift that God has given me and a gift that I do my best to use for good and give it all I have. I am loved by many of God's children for this, and because it does show that I am trying to grow in this life. God saved me among so many and I must accept that he has a purpose for me. If I am good enough for God, I should be good enough for me. Thank you, God!"

and lastly, I quote the words from one of his concerts during the song, "Life Without You."

"You know, right now, the most important thing in my life is to make sure you understand that first of all, I thank God I'm alive today. And I mean that. You see, I spent too many years of my life thinking that the big party was the whole thing. It took me quite a while to realize that the real deal is to be able to be enough of a person on your own to know when somebody loves you and cares about you. You see, we are here, as far as I can tell, to help each other. Our brothers, our sisters, our friends, our enemies. That's to help each other, not hurt each other...and sometimes, to help them, we have to help ourself...so that we'll know that they're around in the first place.

You see, it's a big world out there...there's enough pain and misery in it without me going around and helpin' it out by hurting myself, and consequently, those that care about me. What I'm trying to get across to you is: Please take care of yourself and those that you love...because that's what we are here for, that's all we've got, and that is what we can take with us."

The world won't see it this way. All they will remember is Stevie Ray's musical genius. But, his overcoming, deliverance and spiritual birth into Jesus Christ will ultimately be the defining feature of his existance on this planet in the eternal realm of the Spirit.

The ROCK for Stevie Ray, and Stevie Ray for the ROCK.

Rock on forever Stevie Ray.

This is good to know. I love his music and his style, and the fact he was a drug addict is bad. But it shows God can help, all you have to do is put your faith in Jesus Christ.

Grace, grace, God's grace. How sweet the sound. All glory is His and Stevie was a recipient of His grace and he knew it and shared it. Beautiful

Read this years ago am sent an email that was posted for Martha Vaughan. To my surprise, she replied. Her main reason for the email? To make certain I was a believer and follower of Christ.:-)

I met a good friend of SRV once. He told me how Stevie would carry around a Bible wherever he went and it was not uncommon to hear him quote scripture. God bless him!

We have a saying in Texas "you have to kill your own snakes" What this means is no one can make you change or change for you. I believe that Stevie Ray Vaughan acknowledging that he had an addiction and beating them is just as awesome as the music that he played. In my oppinion Stevie Ray Vaughan "killed his own snakes" and he made peace with the Lord how awesome is that?

Hello!
My wife Cloie & I travelled from IL to AZ in May 2010.(We relocated.) Our journey led us through territory south of Drumright (I-44?). Because I'm a drummer, I remembered the name, he he! I subscribe to another Topix forum, and was aware that most towns have their own forums. Out of curiosity, I Googled Drumright, and learned about Stevie Ray Vaughan's adoption into the only family that matters. As a writer, and as a Christian, I could wax eloquent about this wonderful discovery. Suffice it to say "Praise the Lord"; we are so grateful for this news. In a world of ever-increasing darkness, it is stirring to see the occasional light.
I lament over gifted folks like Layne Staley (AIC) and others who preferred to be "Down in a Hole, losing my soul..."
God is good, and there are so very many testimonies to this truth. How Cloie & I met is a story worthy of the miracles of the Book of Acts (which we are living in, really). The Christian reader understands, right? God bless you all mightily.
Drumming right,
Steve & Cloie, AZ
PS: It is good to see no negative comments here. You would not believe the meanness of a good number of folks who "poison-pen" anything good on threads like this in other communities. Makes you want to violate your Christianity and assault with words (something I have been known to do as well as my drumming, he he!) Is Drumright like a slice of Heaven, we wonder? May God's best be yours now & throughout eternity, good people of Drumright.

well I don't agree with stevie on all of that but he has the right principles and that's the main thing, caring for everyone is the main thing. He was the best and it sucks we won't ever see him again
