Southland towns to get broadband access The state of Illinois and Cook County are spending $16 million to lay 70 miles of underground fiber optic cable to bring high-speed Internet access to six Southland communities. The project is expected to create at least 150 permanent and temporary jobs for engineers, electricians, laborers, construction workers and network technicians. Schools, hospitals, and libraries in Calumet Park, Harvey, Robbins, Dixmoor, Riverdale and Markham will benefit from the improvements. The state’s $6.1 million investment is through its Illinois Jobs Now! capital construction program and is being combined with Cook County’s $10 million to fund the project. Homewood Mayor Richard Hofeld, president of the South Suburban Mayors and Managers Association, said the project will give high-speed access to towns “that would probably not have it otherwise.” “This project provides another critical step forward in the southern suburbs’ efforts to strengthen our economy and create jobs,” Hofeld said. County board President Toni Preckwinkle said South Cook County has high unemployment, and “some of the highest concentrations of poverty and the lowest levels of technology adoption and access (in the Chicago area). Broadband will be critical to reversing these trends.” Mayor Peloquin is so busy running for Congress he fails to get Broadband for Blue Island. He has really lost all interest in being the Mayor. This is sad for the residents.

There are grants available for free wifi for municipalities. Blue Island City Hall could and should have persued such a grant. However that would take time and energy away from the priority fill my pockets program.
