I don't know the guy that got shot, Pierce, I believe was his last name. I feel for his family. From a law enforcement point of view, however, I can see how the officer felt that his life may have been in danger. IF what they said happened, actually happened.

First off, 90mhp is WAY to fast. Anybody would agree with that. So, you initiate a stop, typical. The guy winds up running from you (10-80), and you wind up chasing this vehicle thru traffic and low light conditions for 20 MILES. He wrecks.

As an officer, you would have to wonder, just why this guy is trying to get away from you. Usually, it's because someone has a warrant, they have drugs, they have a suspended license, USUALLY NOT BECAUSE THEY HAVE POSSIBLY HAD TOO MUCH TO DRINK. So, Keep that in mind.

As you get out of your patrol car and approach the vehicle, you give the driver verbal commands to put your hands where they can be seen. THIS IS FOR OFFICER SAFETY. THE MOST IMPORTANT PART OF ANY OFFICER'S DAILY DUTIES. So, after giving verbal commands, in vain so it seems, your suspect begins digging through his clove compartment?!

This is where it gets very intense. I wasn't there, and thankfully I haven't been in that situation, YET. But think about it. AS AN OFFICER, WOULD YOU WAIT TO SEE WHAT HE'S DIGGING FOR? If you wait, and it turns out to be his driver's license, THAT'S GREAT. HOWEVER, if it turns out to be a PISTOL, and by the time you wait to see that pistol, it's pointed at YOU, and it's too late.

Now here's the PRICELESS question...Is YOUR LIFE worth waiting to see what he's going to pull out of that console?? Not only YOUR LIFE, but YOUR FAMILY.

I'm not saying that I would have shot the man, but I'm not saying that I wouldn't have either. It's really hard to criticize the officer because we weren't there, YOU and ME WEREN'T PUT IN THAT POSITION. After the fact we may all have done it differently, or we may have all done exactly what he did.

BUT IT'S NOT FAIR TO CHASTISE THAT OFFICER FOR HIS ACTIONS.

The family of the victim and officer, his family, and his agency are in my thoughts.

As an officer, he did what ALL OFFICERS hope and try to do every day, MAKE IT HOME ALIVE.

To the Ga Officer who wrote in. How dare you! Police officers along with all law enforcement are trained for this type situation, and yes you are to wait!! You as an officer of the law have to know all the facts before making the decision to take a life. Yes, we as citizens expect you to wait to see if your life is actually in danger. What if this had been two civilians?!! The person who fired the fatal shots would be in jail, and so should this officer. No matter what, at the end of the day this officer shot and killed and unarmed man. This no matter how you want to justify it is murder. No one should be allowed to get away with this type of crime especially not the people who are suppose to uphold the laws of our land. All law enforcement should be held to the highest of standards. I do feel for the officer, I don't think he intitially killed this man, but the facts are the facts and he/she needs to own up and take responsibility. If all law enforcement in Georgia thinks like you..God help us all.

Chad and the police officer knew each other since high schoool, and there had been bad blood between them. Chad's hometown was Edison. What if this officer told Chad that he would kill him if he came back to Edison for what ever reason. Could that have been the motive for the officer shooting Chad? Chad must have felt that his life was in danger from this individual, who already had it out for him. Sounds like Chad was running from this officer because he knew this guy was going to kill him and use the badge to hide behind. The officers could have used a spotlight to blind the victim and then surround him and get him out of the vehicle. With redneck rambo officers like this no one is safe when driving through these small towns.

i don't bagree with a driver, driving at that rate of speed, but at the same tokin,i think that if that officer was close enough to the driver of the white truck and could clearly see the driver reach for the console (or) the glovement, he would have lotiable time to make some adjustment, and may-be shoot the guy in the arm(or) some other part of the body and not take his life.from what i have read in the news colum, personally i think the office over reacted... he must be a rookie...
