According to the TRib,Sturdisteel Company of Waco, Texas, will receive $204,500 to replace the current aging press box with a new prefabricated steel structure that will be wired for digital access. Mashan Inc. of Home, Indiana County, will handle related electrical work at a cost of $613,672.

Spending over 800 k on a press box is absurd in this economy. I am sure that alternatives building strategies among boosters, and the expertise of Eastern Westmoreland Career and Technology, along with the expertise of local contracts could do this job for much less Mr. Krinock !

Will existing structure be able to support this new facility? my understanding is they lost the blueprints to the stadium and have no idea of the ability to sustain more weight. This came from a guy who worked at Gibson Thomas.

The leadership (or lack thereof) of this school district and their decision-making, particularly when it comes to financial decisions, are questionable to say the very least. Scary stuff.

I heard that they would build the structure on the visitor Side since any work done on the home side would require a complete overhaul to the stands, due to current structure stability.

This building project should not be a priority in this austere time. Such scarce resources should be directed for instruction! It appears that the Board is hell bent on using the money left over from over- estimating the costs of rebuilding Grandview Elementary. Five million for a physical fitness facility despite the resounding no vote from a survey on building projects among taxpayers was not enough.

Kiski Area School District recently saved a great deal of money on a capital improvement having the area Career and Technology construct new covered bleachers for the football stadium in Vandergrift. Derry Area should consider using the talents of students that will provide a learning experience supervised by faculty with compensation. If civil, or architectural engineering is needed to deal with the geology, or the weight bearing capabilities of the stadium super structure, the Board should consider hiring interns from institutions of higher education with engineering curriculums.

For instance, Penn State engineering students designed the expansion of the north upper deck at Beaver Stadium years ago. There are ways to deal with insurance liabilities and ways to deal with the parameters of using dedicated bond money for these projects. A year ago The Board spent considerable money hiring a landscape firm. I was appalled! The school district has an award winning agriculture/ horticulture department that should have been considered to do the job, thus saving the taxpayers some money.

Unionized janitorial staff.

The architect they've used has moved away, but is a good ol boy.

Um, the 'conditioning' "ROOM" (which is what it REALLY IS) STILL doesn't have equipment in it...please.

You are right, now they have to deal with an uncertain geology riddled with coal mines. This is going to cost a fortune to prepare a foundation for a press box!

The District should be retiring debt from building projects, and saving for the pension crisis!

Bulding projects on major capital improvements such as the Press Box should be vetted by the PA Dept of Education. Especially in an moribund economy that we have now.

Yes in a survey of residents of the School District there was a resounding vote of "no" for these projects, but the Board with left- over money from the Grandview bond issue decided to build a field house and new pressbox in the middle of a deep recession.

They have no regard for the taxpayer!

Being a taxpayer I understand why everyone is up in arms but I also see other schools press boxes. They are beautiful. Derry's is so old and run down it's an embarrassment. That press box is used for more than just high school football games. There's midget football, track, cheerleading, graduation, etc. Unfortunatly it needs to be done. Derry used to have one of the beautiful complexes. Now it's one of the worst. Yes education is most important but it is also important for the extra curicular activites for the kids. First it keeps them off the streets, Secondly it gives them opportunities for scholarships and thirdly the kids love the sports. Are we to just shut everything down and not use the facility and cancel the sports, and hold graduation in the gym so people can be limited as to who goes. What other school district has no football or track program. To stop these programs would be absurd and to continue them would require upkeep and unfortunately the press box is one of the upkeeps and it is long over due. No I don't want to pay for it either but in my mind there is no other choice. The only thing I can't disagree with is using the students to build the press box rather than outside contractors but I don't know the in's and out's of that. As far as the physcial fitness facility. I heard there were grants that were awarded to Derry for that project.

A lot of high schools in the area including Latrobe added a second level to their press boxes and did it in house. Latrobe is one of them. Making a press box from steel plate is overkill unless you want to put it on a battleship.

The money for the equipment as grant funded, the building was taxpayer money!
