This name is an honor to the Indians who used to roam the area. However, I'm not sure if people would go for the name Whitemen for a school mascot. I guess I would be ok with it. It is not a derogatory name either way.

The same people that don't want names honoring Native Americans are the same ones who will cry that a name like 'Whiteman' is arrogant and elitist and therefore also not OK.

What is missing here is the how Native Americans feel about this. After all it is Native Americans that the Mascot name is referring to. Many of them find it racist. They have every right too. There are no teams called for example: The Nashville Negros or the New Jersey Jews, The Indiana Italians or The Georgia Germans. Because all of us would be outraged by such blatant racism. But because it's the quiet minority called Native Americans that it's happening too we white people think it's ok. Go Figure.

I for one, am tired of worring what does and what does not "offend" certain areas of the population. I suppose,if one dug deep enough just about any Mascot name would offend someone ,some where. It's NOT as if the mascot was called "The Savage Redmen".I guess the Saints football team should change thier name also,it just might "offend" the Ethiests,or the Vikings ( the Scandinavians might object to a less than perfect team with that name). I mean ,come on already, this is a stupid thing to waste peoples time with, get over it and move on.

I am so tired of these idiots who see discrimination and racism everywhere they look. Maybe they should look in the mirror and worry about themselves first! Native American mascots do nothing but honor that which they represent! Schools have pride in their mascot and thus have pride what they represent. While I have and will never be a NDSU fan. I have always appreciated the U's hockey rivalry with the Fighting Sioux. That logo does nothing but show pride in the Native American cheif represented. If they cave into pressure from the NCAA, they should be ashamed of themselves. Where are the first amendment attorneys and why are they not stepping forward to fight for the Fighting Sioux?!?! Is there another motivation here? Are all of these bleeding hearts really trying to erase every positive symbol of American Indians that exist. Are they really still guilty over things that were done so long ago that they had NOTHING TO DO WITH?!?! The sins of our fathers, wait, great, great grandfathers; no, not my fathers. the majority of my bloodlines came to America in the indudtrial age and after. They have nothing to be guilty for and neither do we. Take pride in your school and your school mascot. For it is only a matter of time before we will no longer be Golden Gophers as it will be found to be disrespectful to the little rodents. It is a good thing we can spend so much time and legislative time on these important matters. no need to balance budgets, look at healthcare, education..... Can we keep the native American logo's and get rid of the idiots who waste our time and our governments time on this redoric? Steve from Red Wing (I guess it is only a matter of time until I will be from Wing as the Red will have to be removed as it honors a Native American!!)

Everyone is a minority in some way or another. It's just that white Christian people are the only ones that can legally be discriminated against. Supposedly they don't fit into a minority group. That should be a minority group of its own. The remaing 12% of people who don't fit into one of the other minority groups.

It's a good thing the Dallas Cowboy's football team does not play against the Cleveland Indian's baseball team. Can you imagine the headlines. Having said that, I think that many years ago the Native Americans were proud to have teams honor them, Washington Redskins, Kansas City Chiefs, Atlanta Braves and the many college and high school names. Why were the Native Americans of the past happy to be honored and the current Native Americans feel offended? Perhaps the current Native Americans should consult with their grandparents to find out what they and their parents thought of it way back when.

The Fighting Irish is a team named used by a Catholic University, owned by the Catholic Church. Apples and oranges.

TopaazMoon, there might not be New Jersey Jews or Indiana Italians--but there are Notre Dame Fighting Irish, complete with a mascot of a red-nosed (and thus inebriated) Irishman/leprechaun. And no one seems to be complaining about that. The day they are required to change their mascot is the same day this school, or the "real" UND (North Dakota, not Notre Dame) should be required to change theirs. Sidebar: Speaking of school names--you gotta love the name of this school: GET High.:D

I don't honestly think it is all that big of a deal... It's just a school mascot. I mean, really, think about it, it's not meant to be a racist thing at all. And because the area has a positive past of American Indians, wouldn't that just mean that the school is honoring the heritage? Like I said before, each school has a mascot. It doesn't mean anything except that it is a fun thing for the school and a fun thing for the teams.

The school is taking on the likeness of the Indian warrior and man. They are honoring the mascot. They are honoring the Indians and their heritage. It is a beautiful thing.

If we can't honor our Native American heritage,do we need to start calling N.D. and S.D. just North and South?? Minnesota is another: "Minnesota is named after the Minnesota River. The river got its name from the Sioux Indian word "Minisota." That word comes from the words "minni," meaning "water," and "sotah," meaning "sky-tinted" or "cloudy." Therefore, Minnesota means "sky-tinted water" or "cloudy water." The Indians gave the river this name because of the blue clay that washed into it." Now what do we do,I don't know what is Polically Correct to say when someone asks "Where do you live?" I'm So confused..........
