Disabled vet parking rules cause much confusion

I think it is imperative that people understand that disabled veterans with "DV" plates are permited to park in spaces designated for the disabled. The following information is quoted from the Texas Department of Transportation: PARKING PRIVILEGES for Veterans with Disabilities.
Vehicles displaying disabled plates, disabled veteran plates or permits are the only vehicles allowed to park in spaces clearly marked for the disabled. In some parking lots, the disabled spaces are colored red and others are marked in the traditional blue color. People who have a blue disabled parking permit or disabled veteran license plates can park in either the red or blue spaces. Those with a red disabled permit are only to park in the red spaces. If the parking lot ONLY has blue-colored spaces, then it is permissible for those with red permits to park in those spaces.(Information provided by the Texas Department of Transportation.) Can't imagine how this can be confusing. It (the rule) does not stipulate that you must have someting else in addition to your plate.

Here's the simple solution to this problem, when in doubt display the mirrow tag as well. How hard can that be.

The number of people who golf pulling their golf bags and working out at gyms or other heavy activity should really consider not taking spaces that those who are not as mobile need. Especially in El Paso where the number of DV plates far exceed available handicap parking places.

Also the number of spouses who believe that the car allows them to park in handicap slots are also as bad as the family members who borrow the handicap placard to use at WalMart or the like.

If questioned "disability" hang postcard on mirror;)
then authority figure maybe liable for harrassment,)
else write your Congressman and/or Senators.

Let's just paint every single parking space, in every single parking lot blue and give blue handicap parking decals/plates to every freaking el pasoan (you young fooos with the nice cars who have these tags know who i am talking about) that way there will be no more confusion

There is nothing confusing about the rule. It is cleary defind at this web site.

They should be but they are not.

I have the disabled sign hanging from my mirror. At the elementary school, every lazy as* parks there and we have to move the wheel chair around them.
COntacted TX DOT about signs and such and was told they "are not a law enforcement ageny", but placed signs. SO I politely asked when we could expect signs they backed up with it was a local El Paso PD problem.

I hae a dav liscense plate for two years. I have parken in handicap parking in new mexico and texas for the whole period of time with no troubles.
there was a city policeman issuing citations to vehicles with a dav tag but no disabled card displayed on the rear view mirror inside the vehicle.
has the rules changed,r amI still able to park ina handicap paking space only(without a card hanging on my rear-view mirror)

I park in these spots all the time when Im running late nobody ever tells me anything. Besides the only people I see using them are Fat slobs With their W stickers.

We have our fare share of DV plates here. The VA Hospital do not recognize the veterans with DV plates to park in a designated VA handicapped parking area. Is that ok?

I disagree that every DV plate qualifies for handicap parking. If you are truely "disabled" then get a placard or DV plates with the symbol. Anyone injured in the military can get a DV plate but not every injury qualifies as "disabled". If you lost a hand in the military, this would give you a DV plate but a missing hand does not qualify for "disabled parking". There are some that need it more than others and so it should be enforced better.

Not "everyone" injured in the military can get DV plates - you have to submit proof you are at least 50% disabled. I just applied to renew my DV plates -and the new ones give you the option of having the wheelchair emblem on the plate or not - and they let you ask for up to two placards (they do ask if they should be blue or red).

All military vets with Disabled Vet plates use the DV plates for their own personal preferences; however, under the law they have that right and yes we can be judgemental and say a person who we see literally in a wheelchair is disabled or a person with no legs is disabled; neverthess, some people do have handicaps that really consider them disabled...LIKE BROKEN RIBs..for an example..You can't see that my ribs are broke or that I am wrapped up in bandages under my clothes, nor that I take pain killers by the hand fulls to ease the pain and that it makes the pain just that more unbearable to walk a half a mile to the store to get my meds. We are all vets and we all have our different circumstances. Stop complaining and be grateful that you see a Veteran that did not lose his/her life. We can't judge everyone with a plate so stop trying to and take responsiblity for you own self-actualization. If you know that you don't need to park there then don't but, judge people who do because this is what's wrong with the world today, we have no sense of TOGETHERNESS!!!

Yes and it is against the law according my husband who is a police to have the placards or anything for that matter hanging from your mirror. Typically cops don't mention it unless they are being mean but, you never want to take that chance so, I always just take it down when I am driving:O)

I have a question, Have a COP ever questioned your Disability? I am a younger veteran and I passed by a cop and the MESQUITE movie theater and I parked there and hung my placard. The cop flashed his lights on me and asked who in this car is Disable. I told him that I was. He then asked for my Driver's Liscense and flashed the light in my car to compare the license with the placard. He then asked me "WHAT IS MY DISABILITY"...I told him that I was a Disabled Vet who was injured while serving. It's a shame that some people use their power to harass innocent people who served their country but, just curious to see if anyone else encountered the same experience.
