Positive changes in Nottoway County

A large majority of the posts I have read on this sight are extremely negative. Let's start a positive dialogue. What is good about Nottoway County? Stop whining and complaining about all that is bad and take steps to make it better. It can start with YOU. Come up with positive ideas for change and then act upon them. Be realistic; there is not going to be a multiplex theater or a big mall or a theme park or a big YMCA in Nottoway County. We don't have the population to support it. But we can start with baby steps. Blackstone is sprucing up downtown to make it more attractive to potential business owners as well as shoppers. We have the wonderful new coffee house and the Herb Cottage is explanding its facilities. Hopefully, Lucky's Sports Bar will be opening soon. Good things are happening. But progress comes with positive action, not griping and complaining.

Nottoway County is having its first Relay For Life on June 13, 2009. It makes no difference where it is held as long as it is done. Thanks to all the people who have donated items for Relay and especially WSVS who graciously donated their time to announce. Find a team and join us because we are celebrating the lives of cancer survivors.
It took twenty years to get it here but finally that dream came true. Others can too if you keep at it.

Downtown Revitalization, The new Medical Center and so on. Blackstone has a lot going right now and the negativity and controversy needs to stop.

I am glad about the new medical center. St. Francis Hospital has beautiful facilities and their cancer treatment center is a positive place to go.

the buildings are being refurbished that is nothing new. Okay and Blackstone family practice is leaving a perfectly good building empty to take up new space with a new name great planning. Another coffee shop another swap meet. That only employees a few great job nottoway. I am trying to be positive. I am positive it is going in the ground. And it is great a change has taken place it is a shame it took 20 years. But go Nottoway. I hope all goes well with this but wait to see my new blog.

You know it has only been a number of decades when this place was actually called white stone, but some thought this to be racism and they changed the name to blackstone. Well I think it time for a better change. We can call it ritirementville,trashville,cor ruptville, drugville, hookersville or my personal favorites boredom and deathville. What do you think go Blackstone. Our voices will be heard and it don't stop here. We will get new people in this county to change will come. God bless and prayers with all.

By the way Blackstone girl trying to make improvements in the community is not whining nor is it found to be extremely negative. But your intake on all of it is very negative because of what ever reason. You need to quit whining an get with it. Your so called changes above really what good are they really bringing just to be shut down just like every other little stores that have tried to make it. Although I hope for them to succeed But so many have tried. And due to the fact of no growth they haven't succeeded. Not that it is impossible because with growth they may excell 100%. But you seem unable to except constructive criticizm and maybe you are the one really whining. Good luck with your little endeavor to try and cover all the bad that has been but you can't cover it up no more than 1 person can change it. But if we worked together for the greater good than maybe we could all prosper.

Huh???? Sorry Big Daddy, get your history straight. The Town of Blackstone was NEVER and I repeat NEVER, called Whitestone. This community grew out of a crossroads in Colonial times know as Blacks and Whites. The name Blacks and White came from two rival taverns at the crossroads where farmerss would stop for the night on their way to take their crops to market: White Tavern and Schwartz Tavern. The word schwartz is German for black. In the latter part of the 19th century, the town was incorporated and Dr. J. M. Hurt proposed the name of Blackstone for the town.

I apologize I was mis informed but I appreciate the history lesson. I am not quite that old. I have talked to several seniors and maybe they weren't sure of their history. But I sure am glad to know that. Now I can pass that boredomville was once known as Blacks and white. Thank you again. But just the same changes have been made. We have color TV now. Cell phones and internet. Where will it end?

Blackstone girl the so called whining you were talking about I have noticed that you didn't respond to my last blog and maybe it is because you are know what is being said is true. And if bigger businesses was to come to the community than our population would grow to. People have to see something in the area to want to be apart of it. And that is all I have been saying. I guess it is a Catch 22; you say people won't come to Nottoway County unless we have big business BUT big business won't come to Nottoway County unless we have the population to support it and people with the skills to work there. I am Blackstone born and Blackstone bred but I can assure you it was never my intention to spend my entire life in Nottoway County. I love the City and all it has to offer. However, I married a Southside Virginia boy who hates the City and everything about it, so I ended up spending most of my life here. When I meet newcomers to the community, I always ask why? what made you come to Blackstone? Sometimes it is because their job brought them here - Ft. Pickett, etc.- but more often than not, it is because they wanted to get out of the City and love the slower pace and quiet life that a rural community has to offer. So you see, what you find so objectionable about rural living is quite attractive to others. Some of you bloggers have cited Dunc Quicke as someone who should run for public office - well Dunc is one of the incumbents you have been complaining about!! He has been serving on the Blackstone Town Council for a number of years. I agree he IS a good man. If you have constructive ideas about change in Blackstone, talk with him about your ideas and what you think this community needs. Take affirmative action instead of just griping. And by the way, I know what the job market is in Nottoway County - I commute 80 miles round trip every day to have a job with decent pay and good benefits!

By the way Guest 2, it was not the Town of Blackstone who wanted to abandon the current Blackstone Family Practice Center building. Bon Secours who owns the practice said that they were not going to renew their lease because the building was outdated and instead were going lease a small office in the shopping center and have one doctor there - a doc-in-a box, if you will. The Town did what they felt they had to do to provide quality medical care with a sufficient number of doctors for the citizens of Blackstone.

There is a Whitestone, Virginia which is on the eastern shore. The old building become obsolete because it did not have enough of the right equipment. I think the new medical center will greatly improve the town. Who says that the old building has to go, perhaps it could still be useful to whoever wants to rent office space.

Well No one ever said all of the officials need to be replaced. Just a good majority of them. Hell I even like Mr. Coleburn. But there are quite a few that need to be removed and I assure you that I am not the only one who feels this way. I will say that while going out lately I have seen that more people are trying to give the kids something to do. I think that is good there is alot of signs of festivals but we need something more steady. Thanks. I am already seeing some positive changes. But again I also got an email that Nottoway and Dinwiddie would be getting new cops hopefully that will start some new too.

Well I probably agree with you on some of the ones that need to vacate the office. I say that because I firmly believe in term limits. They have served their terms. Just give us some time on some things and we will be able to make the events this year become bigger.

You know I have seen this over and over on here where there seems to be some real good points being made but it also seems that there are some people on here who are just covering with all kinds of sweetness and patience has a term limit too. I have ran out of patience and believe it is time for major changes in the community.

And there is a building that will be vacant soon The old Blackstone family practice and Yes I am going to try and get a grant and turn that into my titty bar. The one I been waiting so long for. Thanks for all yalls help. But I am sure and I am positive that our fine town officials won't see it happen even if I bought the building and got the grant. Even if I got off my ass and did the leg work it is the same county officials that will stop me an my Titty bar. But with yalls help we might be able to get it through. See with the petition that is being spoken of. The wonderful town committee might see the tax dollars it could bring. Wow that is a no brainer. So say yes to titties and weiners ladies and gents of the county. I believe I have summed up the argument about the grants and the petitions hope we all see the humor in this roflmao. Just so you know Blackstone Girl I have given alot of thought about your response here to Big Daddy well the more I thought the more it came to me. You know I followed your advice about checking history and facts. Well here are a few facts for you . The web page that is set up for Blackstone and Nottoway says they are always trying to improve and grow. The Blackstone one also says exactly what you said about Blackstones history. But here are some facts these sights that are on here are made up by our county supervisors and are all put together by the same ones who have tried to cover Nottoways dirt for years. So On that being said I can make a webpage to look as pretty as a picture if I chose to. This doesn't mean that what is on that webpage is Truly factual does it? So You see where before I thought maybe you had wisdom I now see you are still trying just as those in office ,it is truly sad just as they try and cover up things scounging official papers they can easily do the same to try and make Nottoway look good but quick news flash it only looked good to retirees. And I know know that certain ones have the keys to the court house and can doctor records as they please and when they see fit. So nice try and try again if you may
