Many schools are now requiring students to read "I Choose to be Happy" at missyjenkins.com in an effort to change their school cultures. Missy's story has saved lives and is one of the top newly released inspirational books out today.

One has to wonder what goes through the minds of kids that would even consider or start rumors of a suicide pact. I know there really wasn't a pact in this case, but there are in other cases.

What does it prove? What does it accomplish? It isn't a game. You can't come back from the grave to see if your friends did it, and how it was for them. You can't talk about it, laugh over it, or compare notes. Dead is dead. The Great Nothingness. The Black Void. Forever.

Not to mention what it does to the friends and family that are left behind. It is something that will haunt them for the rest of their lives.

It's scary to even think that kids would consider, or even start rumors of such a thing. It's as if they have no concept of what death really is.

Thanks for posting this Hammy. Missy is a great example of what Christian faith does when it's authentic. As secularzation continues to creep into our schools and culture we need to keep putting people like Missy before the kids.

You don't remember what it's like to be a kid do you?
KIDS DON'T THINK!!!
Their brains aren't fully developed yet.
Kids do stupid things, it's a fact of life.
As far as rumors of a suicide pact?
If you found any of the kids responsible and asked them why they did it, their response would be....(insert stupid teenage voice)....."I dunno".
As far as the families of the two victims?
My heart goes out to them.
You'll never know what it's like to deal with a friend or family member commiting suicide until it happens.
I hope it never does, that is pain I don't wish on anyone.

I just went to Missy's web site.
WOW!!!
She is an inspiration to all.

However.......I have a problem with your "secularization" comment.
Do you have any idea how many gay kids are killing themselves because of your so called "authentic" religion???
Keep the fundies out of the schools!!!

My son's bestfriend did it some years back, and no you will never understand the feelings until you experience it. For years after the fact it is still as real as it was then. I worried about my son because they were so close. He had so much anger and rage built up, blamed himself, it was horrible.(result of bulling)

My sincerest condolences.
One of my friends did it when she was 19.
She was molested when she was a child and never got over it.
Her family got her help and councelling but nothing worked.
Eventually she ended up using coke, heroin, started prostituting.
Not long after she hung herself in someone's back yard.
That was 17 years ago and it still haunts me....

No, I don't know how many gay kids kill themselves from fundamentalist Christian teaching, nor, I suspect do you. You applaud Missy's amazing character as long as she keeps her faith to herself, yet it is her faith that makes her extraordinary.

You really have no clue about how rumors typically start, do you? Most likely, there was never any intent to start a rumor--it just grew on its own. Typically, something like this starts with one person saying to another, "Two suicides, timed so closely together. I wonder if they were related." Later, the second person says to a third, "Jimmy and I were discussing those suicides, and wondering if they might be linked, like they had a pact or something. If there was, you have to wonder if that's the end of them, or if there are more coming."
Someone else overheard part of that, and told someone else, "I heard someone talking about those suicides, about there being a pact, and that the end is coming." Etc. etc. etc. And before you know it, you're in a situation like Black River Falls was in. Most likely, no one INTENTIONALLY started these rumors. They just grew through conversation and misunderstanding.

Death is the great nothingness. And you know that by... what?

Teenagers, or anyone for that matter, who kill themselves are suffering from great blackness here on this earth. Hopelessness. You have posited the greatest hopelessness of all. Nothing after death. It is your belief system that would propel a depressed individual to further hopelessness. Think about that before you write or speak on the topic.

Have you ever played "telephone"? That's how rumors start. A classmate could have said to a friend "I wonder if there was a suicide pact or something" after the second boy commited suicide, and very quickly it turned into this big elaborate story. As for death, I don't think it's a black void or nothingness. But I won't get off topic here. It's a proven fact that kids/teenagers act on impulse. They don't think about their actions, which is why they all do stupid stuff. I'm sure we can all look back and remember a time we did something REALLY dumb.

It is her will that makes her extraordinary.
I could care less if Missy or the fundies go around preaching, just STAY THE HELL away from us!!!
DON'T go into schools saying, "God loves you but hates your sin".
I went to Catholic grade school and high school.
Yes I'm gay.
It's the "God loves you bs" that drives so many gay kids to an early grave.
Gay kids need role models, not you people and your book of lies.
I had no role models when I was growing up.
All I had was the typical Christian hate, hate, hate.
I'm so happy for gay kids nowadays, things will only get better for them as time goes on.
As for Missy, I admire her will and her passion.
Her religious views do not concern me.
Oh and FYI!!!
Here is a good link for youth suicide.
Gay suicide in particular.

Why is that off topic? It seems to me that it would be completely on topic. Too many people in this are left with secular designs of hope. Self-actualization and gratification. For a creature looking for greater meaning and purpose in life the world's answers leave the soul empty. Go talk to someone depressed and ask why would you want to go into nothingness. Talk about a terrible answer for their horrendous pain.

Daily Horoscope for December 22

Virgo

Be careful you don't wind up doing someone else's work today, Virgo. There are all sorts of little tricks to persuade you to take pity on them, from pretending to be ill to making such a hash of everything that you can't bear to watch for a moment longer. Then you are likely to be asked to put in some overtime, at the expense of your social life. Grr.
