Pride Group Settles Discrimination Lawsuit Against Birmingham Mayor

Full story: lezgetreal.com

The City of Birmingham, Alabama and a local gay pride group have reached a settlement in a federal lawsuit brought by the group after that city's mayor attempted to withhold a parade permit and refused issue an official proclamation, or to install parade banners on city property for a gay pride event last year. Central Alabama Pride Inc. filed a federal lawsuit last year against Birmingham Mayor Larry Langford, saying he discriminated against the group when he refused to allow city workers to hang Gay Pride Week banners. At the time Langford said, “The bottom line is I don’t condone the lifestyle and what they were asking me to do in my official capacity as mayor was to issue a proclamation which in essence endorsed the gay lifestyle… If I had issued such a proclamation, I would in essence be saying that God’s position is wrong and I wouldn’t dare take a position against God. So as opposed to suing me, they need to be suing God, and the last time I checked, he can defend himself. End of story. On a side note… The FBI arrested Langford last winter on a 101-count indictment alleging conspiracy, bribery, fraud, money laundering, and filing false tax returns in connection with a long-running bribery and kickback scheme involving a municipal sewer system construction project, that according to prosecutors, netted Langford $235,000 and has nearly bankrupted Alabama’s most-populous county.

So the mayor of Birmingham is a Bigot? This isn't surprising news. My question is, if he was arrested why is he still mayor?

..and to top this off even more-so- this Mayor is a Black man....using his religion as a basis of his bigoted decision....a religion that was once used to discriminate against him! Pathetic!

Always watch out for those protesting their piety. They invariably have the most to hide.

I love the image of Langford telling St. Peter: "Yes, I did steal money from the county and nearly bankrupt it. But I stopped the gay pride parade!"

Ever hear of "proven guilt"? Arrested and charged isn't that. Do you honestly believe that anyone who's been arrested should automatically be fired?

Just saying.

Gee, perhaps asking Blogovich might help answer that question. Enough evidence to warrant an actual arrest should actually be enough to suspend an elected officials duties when dealing with corruption/bribery/kickback issues like this and people turning a blind eye and allowing such things to continue(giving them the opportunity to bribe or threaten jurors, judges, and other such people)is what allows such corruption to proliferate. There comes a time when those elected to office do need to be held accountabe to a higher standard.

We don't SEE the evidence until the trial. Sorry man but firing arrested people is contrary to our entire legal system. Moving employed people who are arrested for issues such as child molestation to other positions makes sense but firing for arrest is counter to our system of justice period.

It's always nice to see moralistic people are at the forefront of committing as many Ten Commandments as possible while pointing out the "sins" of others which never made it to the Top Ten. btw, they didn't sue God because God wouldn't have settled.

Innocent till proven guilty is correct. But remember, many in the public field must adhere to higher standards. This is why police are put on paid leave for allegations against them, etc. While I agree that he does not necessarily needs to be fired, his ability to perform his job is at the least compromised and any decisions from his office during this time could be called into question IF he is convicted.

And while we have not seen the evidence nor has guilt been proven, the fact that the indictment contains 101 items is telling. It is plausible that some is innocent of a crime they are indited for (happens all the time), but if the FBI has enough evidence that they can get 101 different charges placed, then even the most objective person would have to agree that that does not bode well for this mayor.

So Mayor Langford believes the homosexuality is wrong because the Bible says so but clearly has no problem violating the Biblical injunctions on stealing and lying. Nice.

Once the integrity of an elected office is compromised as in the manner currently being discussed, the entire system of justice is called into question, allowing an individual who is arrested for child molestation to continue working with children should they be able to get out of jail is sheer stupidity, the same with this case. the public interest is best served to have a REPLACEMENT put in the position until the person is either convicted or cleared. THAT is justice.

That's your opinion, not a well founded one given the number of times counts are tossed out and arrests dropped but you're still entitled.

I am not saying this man is guilty and I am not saying this man is not guilty.... What I will say is all of the other co-conspirators charged in this case along with Langford have plead guilty and are now testifying for the government.

So in the meantime let's just allow him to mess up as much as he possibly can, continue bankrupting the City, after all we can't replace him, he's "innocent" right now..........

The ten commandments do not say "Thou Shalt Not Be Gay." The do say "Thou Shalt Not Steal."

These hypocrites always have their filthy hands in the till. He deserves a Muslim punishment - chop off his right hand...

...then let him bleed to death.

That's right, just punish them before they're found guilty in a court of law.

That's the American way according to the internet blog.
