I'm all for getting drunk drivers off the road. But why do the powers that be make a huge announcement about exactly when they are going to "crackdown"? Why not crackdown, then report about it after the crackdown has occurred? If someone is robbing a house the police do not call the suspect first and warn them they are coming, why tip off potential drunk drivers to the fact that the police will be actively seeking them out? People that would drive drunk will not change their behavior permanently, they will just change it for the weekend.

Why planned? I'm sorry about the officer who was injured by the drunk. The drunk beat a system that's beatable and innocent people always pay for the carelessness of others. What about the countless others before him? The crack dwon should begin in the parking lots of the f ing bars, at the beach exits and at every school, Why does law enforcement wait until a tragedy like this happens to PLAN something.

quote....."The Nassau Police Department plans to put extra officers on duty for an intensive crackdown on drunken drivers during the Memorial Day weekend, county officials said Thursday."
isn't this something they should be doing EVERYDAY, not just holiday weekends......the drunks never need a special reason to drink, everyday is a holiday to them.

Advice for cops
|
when you pull over these marauding drunken potential murderers, just turn off your dashboard cams and proceed to beat the bejesus out of them before you take them in. The sober and law-abiding driving public will understand when you say their injuries were caused when they tripped and fell down because they were so drunk. We won't question your word - promise!

If as you say, someone is just over the limit then they are doing something illegal, they are driving drunk. Since you are obviously too stupid to be allowed to continue living and god forbid reproducing please start drinking now so that we can read about your horrific one car accident next week.

Why does it take a holiday weekend, to enforce current laws?

And how exactly does the DA prevent a drunk driver from hitting the road at 5 in the morning? Do you expect her to jump out of bed and patrol the roadways with a flashlight? Dennis Dillon would've let Martin Heidgen plea down to vehicular assault and serve a few years. Instead he's in jail for murder after killing two people. I think DA Rice deserves a little credit. SHE CANT HIT THE ROADWAYS WITH HER FLASHLIGHT AT 5:00AM BECAUSE SHE IS DRIVING DRUNK AND GETTING LET GO BY SUFFOLK COUNTY HIGHWAY PATROL DURING THAT HOUR..

Stagga Lee wrote: I am glad that the crackdown is in effect as there will be many drunks on the road. The LIRR needs to run some lines north and south, or provide more connections to north and south lines. It think this may deter people from riding and instead driving. If you need to only go N-S you need to go all the way to Jamacia just to change direction. That in itself is ridiculos. The f'n LIRR can't run east and west. You want them to run north and south?

If you know the cops are setting up roadblocks, you won't drink and drive. What if the drunk driver doesn't know about the crackdown and kills somebody a block from the checkpoint. If he'd known ahead of time, he might not have been drinking and driving

drinkers need to accept the discomfort that will come as a result of not drinking and realize that there is more to life than getting high.

The police should be out there anyway, without having to "announce" it. They should always be out there. The police should have an ongoing program of checkpoints - this would be more effective. The article makes it seem like the cops that are actually enforcing the law are doing something special.

Suozzi and Nassau Police Commissioner Lawrence Mulvey flew Thursday morning in a police helicopter looking at high-traffic roads in the county "that might be amenable to checkpoints," So in typical Nassau fashion, Suozzi took to the sky in an expensive helicopter to look at roads. I suppose a map or Google earth just wouldn't do huh? Equally effective, but not nearly as theatrical. Money wasting jack@ss.
