Did anyone know that they are teaching gambling at the middle school? In Lexington? You know like Texas Hold Em and other like it. They even play with pretend money. Lets just create a bunch of gambling addicts while were at it, in this for good for nothing place. Its a new math teaching technique. Are you serious. This is as good as the educators can come up with???? The students cant get a higher education than gambling? The school must not expect much of the kids. "Well since your gonna be stuck here might as well learn how to gamble. God knows your to stupid for college."

They teach them how to make bombs too! I called the police about this video and they said that the kids learn to make bombs in middle school. They didn't seem too concerned about it. The scary thing is that kids who make little bombs for fun will probably be making bigger bombs next!

That's amazing, I did not know they were teaching gambling. In fact I did not know this because I taught the class. Maybe you should get the facts first before you bash an educational institution. The class description stated it was a NON-GAMBLING community card game. Students learned the history of how the game became popular in the West, and how it became a Tournament game broadcast on national television today. They learned how to interact socially with other students whom they would normally never talk to, they learned problem solving, probability, and strategy in a card game after having learned all the suits, hands, and powers of each. These students played with red, white, and blue plastic chips. Yes they did have a monetary assignment to the chips but I felt it necessary for the game. These kids were reminded constantly that this was not gambling and that gambling is illegal. Lastly this is a TOURNAMENT game. If you have ever watched this game on tv you would know that each contender pays a fee to enter the tournament, plays the game with plastic chips, and if they win they recieve a cash prize. I used to race motorcycles. When I went to a race I would pay an entry fee, try my best to win, and if I did I would win a money prize. And by the way, maybe you should type your response with a little better spelling and grammer. It really shows how intelligently thought out this tpost on Texas hold'em really was. I had a class of young kids that were excited about a card game when most had never even picked up a deck of cards before, some even went home and taught their family so they could play a game on their family night. That will no longer happen now because some poorly informed person complained to the school that their child was being taught how to gamble.

It's interesting that you believe that bomb making is in the curriculum at the school. There is nothing in the video to make one believe they learned this in school. But they do however teach kids how to do many other safe and educational science-related things. Maybe you should attend the Science Fair they have once a year, or the Science Olympiad. I'll agree that there are some bad apples, however the Middle school does not condone, nor do they teach these kinds of things.

I have been to the Science Fair and the Science Olympiad and that is not the point of what the kids are doing in your classroom or in the Science classroom. How about teaching the kids how to play Monopoly or another game that's not associated with gambling? I betcha most of the spanish kids have never played it. If you had paid attention to what I wrote you would know that the POLICE told me that the kids learned how to make the toilet bombs in school. According to your way of thinking toilet bombs aren't bombs and Texas hold 'em isn't associated with gambling.

Well I guess the police would know since they are in our class rooms observing.

Monopoly is taught in another Activity as well as other games. And you're right, most have never played a board game before. But guess what, Monopoly uses paper money, Pitch uses plastic chips, and so does Yahtzee and numerous other games. You can gamble on anything if you want. And I do see the other side where Hold'em could be seen as gambling. However, read my first post. The description of the class, as well as the curriculum was based on the idea of it (the class) being a non-gambling community card game. And I think my analogy of the racing is pretty dead on of it being a tournament. Golfers do the same thing. Are they gambling? If this person had known the facts and posted a disagreement about the card game being associated with gambling I wouldn't have replied. But when someone tries to slander my profession, and say that we are teaching kids how to gamble and build bombs, it gets me a little fired up. Not to mention getting down on the kids. It amazes me how everyone BUT the teacher seems to know what goes on in the classroom.

You silly person. The card game with the chips is inherently a gambling game. Some people who begin to gamble become addicts. You have no more right to teach children poker than to buy them thier rirst beer. Not even a "near beer". Shame on you.

What is investing? Do you absolutely know the result of whether the stock you buy will go up or down? No--so strictly speaking, it's gambling.
I don't know the context of what they are teaching, but poker does have firm roots in percentage, ratios, estimation, comparison, etc.

It's a creative way to teach a difficult subject. Granted, it can become a dicey issue, if not introduced, monitored, in a strong way.

But it's ignorant closed-minded people like you who make teachers teach by the book.(i.e. no creativity, no inspiration, etc.) OPEN your mind.
