ruston is not a bad place. it's getting better. everything is centered on religion and politics. it matters who you know, mostly. you can still get out of arrest if you know the sherrif or chief of police. but, you can still leave your doors unlocked...in some neighborhoods. it helps to go to church. if you are anything but baptist you are second class. however, you can still see stars at night. and "bad traffic" means an extra 2 mins getting across town. when you go to the store chances are you'll see someone you know. gossip is still king, and word travels fast, here. there are positive/negitive just like everywhere else. we have yet to enter the 21st century. but, we're getting there, albiet kicking/screaming. and, for such a small town it is incredibly diverse w/international students. there are tons of opportunities to do volunteer work in various clubs, orgs, churchs. it's a great way to weave yourself, and family, into the social fabric. just b/c you don't go to a certain church doesn't mean you can't help out there. good luck.

Oviously the wrong people are on this site giving out horrible information. I have met some of the nicest people by living here. Everyone speaks & if they don't they are one of these people that are just haters. I hope you find your way in our small town.

I agree with the last post. I've lived here for 37 years and love it. I'm a member of a local women's philanthropic group (our biggest project is St. Jude's Hospital) and also a member of a women's chorus based on Ruston (part of an international group). If like to sing harmony, check out our blog at www.pineyhillsharmony.blogspot.com . We won't have rehearsal July 3 b/c of the holiday, but will resume July 10. There's contact info on the blog if you'd like more information. Sorry ... no digital page for the philanthropic group yet, but the contact people in the chorus can point you toward the Ruston chapter of Epsilon Sigma Alpha. Welcome to the area!

The most honest evaluation of this town. It is getting better everyday. Other towns in the area has alot more problems then our town. My son moved to another small Louisiana town and he misses the different international people everywhere instead of black and white. Great town compare to other small towns. Crack heads are a minimum and crime is not bad. Baptist are hardcore and if you open a business and not part of the community, it usually fails. But alot of old crazy-rich folks are leaving quickly and the younger crowd wants a change. Great Town but needs more jobs!
