I grew up near your town and I can't ever remember when it was nice. Only thing Etowah ever had going for it was the Bar ( Vera's ) and the Starlight. And both places were dangerous due to rednecks and cheap beer. Now with both places gone the only excitement over that way might be the little store Fredericks of Garden Point.

If I was trying to sell my house and was worried that my neighbors yard was bringing down my property value... I sure as hell wouldn't be telling people they would be buying a house next to people who allow their kids to carry weapons to school. I'd say your mom's gossip probably hurt the property value more than the neighbors yard did.
