My name is Claud Morris Burns III. Better known to my friends as Morris. I am writing in regard to a project my lifelong friend, Rick Norvell has begun.
Rick and I have been close friends since we were twelve years old in Mr. Stegall's math class. We're both a little older now. I play drums and percussion in two Gulf Coast bands and work at a shipyard when I'm not. Rick owns a modest recording studio and media production company in Greenville, Mississippi.
On June 26,2006 Rick and his wife Sue's world was forever changed when their only son was found dead. Chris Pearson was Sue Norvell's only child. He was Rick's beloved stepson. Rick and Chris were especially close because of a shared passion for music. Chris worked as staff drummer, guitarist and keyboard artist in Rick's studio when he wasn't going to college.
On June 26,2006 Chris's body was found in a ditch on a lonely country road outside the small Mississippi Delta community where he lived. He was lying on his back, his shoes placed neatly in front of his feet. The night before he had been at a party with his friend Jeffery Bassie. He had been pursuing one of his passions, Playing penney ante poker with his friends. He was drinking beer. His friend Jeffery was drinking also. Chris left the party with his best friend Jeffery. Somewhere between the party and home the truck wound up in a ditch. Jeffery apparently used his cell phone to call for someone to take him home. His truck was pulled from the ditch by a tow truck owned by Jeffery's family. The next day Chris's grandmother awoke to find him missing. She became worried enough to call the local sheriff's department. Upon investigation it was learned that Chris and Jeffery had been to the party and left together. An incident report by a deputy noted Jeffery's SUV in the ditch. Although the SUV had been removed and apparently washed it's location in the ditch the night before was the last place Chris was known to have been. A subsequent search of the area was conducted and Chris's body was discovered only after a k-9 unit was called in.
Jeffery was questioned by Mississippi Highway Patrol investigators and claimed he could remember nothing.
Now almost a year later...Chris' death is still a mystery. Jeffery remains free and still claims he can't remember anything of the events of that evening. Rick and Sue Norvell and the Pearson family, struggle with the loss of their son and the restless pain of not knowing what happened to him.
A couple of months ago Rick called me to ask my help in recording a song he had written expressing his feelings about their loss. He called it "Face the Music". I was proud to be a part of this recording as I knew Chris from his childhood and was very fond of his easy going personality and deeply intense musical abilities.
Rick has given me permission to forward this song and another tune called "Back From the Dead" which was ironically written by Chris himself to whomever I please. The tunes are copy written but Rick gives his blessing to whomever may want to make a copy of them. He has told me it is not his intention to make any money from this. He is using his own money to make copies and distribute them. Included in this forward are mp3 files of "Face the Music" and "Back From the Dead" as well as printable cd covers and liner notes. I have also included newspaper articles concerning the incident from the local paper where Chris lived.
It's been a year and the investigation into chris's death is reportedly "at a standstill".
Rick wants to keep the investigation active. Rick wants Jeffery Bassie to hear "Face the Music". Rick wants to know what happened to his son.
