Fortunately nobody else was hurt! I live just a block from the accident on a VERY popular street for trick or treaters. Right around the time of the accident there were a ton of little kids out trick-or-treating. When I first heard the sirens I was so afraid it was a child who got hit.

I hope this teen learns his lesson, he could have created a tragedy!

California (along with all the other states) has it all backwards. When you turn 16, you should be allowed to get a moped or a scooter. When you turn 18, a motorcycle of up to 550cc. When you turn 21, you may then drive a ton and a half of steel around on the roads with your fellow citizens.

Completion of the EMT course should also be mandatory in the junior or senior year of high school.

People would be much better drivers, and crap like this would happen way less often.

Lucky nobody died.

The penalties need to be swift and severe, or this person will once again get behind the wheel with a head full of alcohol and kill an innocent victim.

Yeh, it seems like we're starting to hear more and more of these bizzare stories of people drunk driving. Some people just never learn. They are known as royal F''' ups.

If his family IS reading this, they should be more concerned with the fact they didn't teach their 19-year-old to NOT DRIVE WHILE DRINKING. They should be counting their lucky stars that the drunk didn't kill a small child or his underaged passenger.

Since they SHOULD be concentrating on where they went wrong, they shouldn't have very much time to worry what a random stranger wished on a Topix thread.

Often, in spite of a parent's best efforts and teachings, their child will mess up. Badly and sometimes tragically. A 19 year old away from his parents will sometimes push the envelope, sadly enough.

I, too, am glad this came to nothing worst than a car off the road. I hope this teenager learns from this shocking mistake and re-thinks his values.

Yes, this is the firt generation of drunk drivers, ever. My father, back in the day drove drunk, frequently. Fortunately, his accidents never involved another vehicle. He would stagger home and buy a new car the next day. Back then, it was "boys will be boys". I drove drunk once and almost drove into a building. Scared me so much, it never happened again. My own mother was hit by a drunk driver and spent over a year in the hospital, in 1952. So, drunk driving i nothing new. Now, it has swung to the other side, with higher speeds and heavier, faster cars, made of plastic. never good to drive while under the influence, but wishing people more harm or locking them up and throwing away the key is not the answer. I hope this kid was shaken up enough to have a real scare and gets some help

Pretty scary deal here . A 19 year old takes a17 year old out on a Saturday afternoon and gets drunk while driving a high powered "sports' car thru the mountains .

Time for the parents to stand up and check what kind of friends their 17 year old hangs out with these days . Kids dont always make the right choices and maybe these parents need to reevaluate what type of friends their 17 year old has ,

Still I am glad to read no body was killed at least and Im sure the familys of both involved here agree, thats the good part of this story for sure.

More Liberal attitudes and a total lack of responsibility exhibited by young adults who grow up in Liberal Land. Maybe if he had been ONLY smoking pot, he wouldn't have crashed! NOPE! He would have been under the influence and still unable to control his vehicle!

__________

ABSOLUTELY . Im glad to see someone else here is looking at how the parents of both teens involved need to look at their part in this behavior as well .
We all know kids make bad choices , but its the parents duty to honestly look at the situation and see if in fact they too had a part in this behavior or was it just one of those bad choices that kids will sometimes make .

Wow, Jack3y, pretty harsh words. While I am not making any excuse for the 19yo getting behind the wheel, you have to remember that he is just 19. Do you remember when you were 19? I bet you didn't always make the best decisions in everything you did. I know that I didn't. I got nailed for a DUI on my 21st birthday back in 1987 and that scared the cr*p out of me. I was raised in a good home, loving parents were strict but fair, I was a good student, but I made a BAD decision that night. Despite what I knew what right and wrong and how my parents had guided me to that point, I decided that I was still going to take a chance and get behind the wheel. Thankfully there was no accident - I was just pulled over, arrested and taken to jail. Now, I am 43 and have not had a single incident with law enforcement since. And if I do happen to have a couple beers now, I still remember that night vividly and will not get behind the wheel whatsoever, even if I feel that I am not impaired. Let's hope that this kid will do the same.

Oh, that is such bull! Yup, He is 19. Old enough to be tried as an adult for homicide. He made a mistake and committed at least two crimes. Let's also not forget that he is under the drinking age (purchase and consumption) of 21.

What if he was the driver that killed the motorcyclist on 1 on Sunday. What if his address was a homeless shelter. Would the comments in this thread be the same?

Why were they flown out by helicopter if they were able to get out on their own? Wasn't Dominican good enough to check for bumps and bruises?
