Regarding street sweeping on Wednesday. I went to City Hall to renew my business licence on Wednesday, so I know the Citywas working. And why shouldn't Veterans have clean streets?

1 Everything this city does is a sham! Tickets on Veteran's Day?? You might be interested that last Friday was the Moore League Cross Country meet at Heartwell Park. The south side of Carson is No Parking 3-6pm and dozens of people got tickets.(I guess I understand the traffic problem.) BUT when we warned people and we moved our cars to the north side of Carson and in the neighborhood, there is a small sign added to the streetsweeping sign that this neighborhood requires a parking permit, so dozens more people got tickets. This left a distinctly bad taste in everyone's mouth. It is hard to respect a government that screws its own citizens. I shop outside of Long Beach. |

1 on the need to heed our laws. I suppose you think you should be given special treatment because of your military status? How about equal application of the law, THAT merits a bit of reflection. |

Re "Brown has some Democrats nervous" (News, Nov. 11):
It's amusing that some Democrats are worried because the public employee unions and other big money interests have bought them a presumed nominee for governor that may not fit their perception of the party. For decades, these same interests have bought candidates in gerrymandered districts with no complaints from those elected, who then voted as they were told, and killed any attempts at reform. It takes more than slogans to be the party of "change." Bob Horvath Long Beach Hey Bob, Justwondering but, are you aware that Jerry Brown was the Democratic Party's California Governor from 1975 until 1983? |

If anybody thnks street sweeping is about sweeping the streets I have some lovely ocean front property in Iowa i'd like to sell you.
Street sweeping is about revenue. Parking ticket revenue. All you have to do is look at the streets after the sweeper has gone by. Instead of garbage in the streets you have wet garbage in the streets. However, on a a daily walk this past Wednesday I counted 50 cars in a 2.5 mile area on Ocean Blvd. with parking tickets on their winshields. That's $2,350 in revenue to the city. Multply that by 2 (for each side of the street) and than again by 4 (weeks in a month) and just Ocean Blvd. nets the city nearly $19,000 a month. Now imagine that over all the streets in the city and you can see why street sweeping to keep our streets clean is not a primary concern of this city. |

"On Veterans Day, when the U.S. Post Office is closed"
Currently, the post office lobby is open 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. Customers can use the machine to buy stamps and send mail. Also, access their mail box. |

The Truth. I agree. We more law abiding types are all for ticketing the scofflaws who insist on impeding the street sweepers that clean the streets, but one would think there are enough "youthful offenders" for the city to dispatch to clean up all the spaces afterward. What ever happened to being sentenced to doing public service? Ronald |

Perhaps Vivian C. Nelson and Jean Stewart need to read those missives a little more closely. It isn't about screening but rather the number of hoops the ASPCA LA requires potential owners to jump through to adopt a pet. They are arbitrary, inconsistent and refuse to identify the adoption standard they use in determining who and who does not get a pet.

Apparently catcher does not appreciate the irony of the city ticketing a veteran's car on a national holiday set aside to honor veterans. Next time I am called to war, perhaps I can designate who will benefit or not benefit from my service. Catcher and the rest of San Fran can pretty well kiss off having me fight to preserve their freedoms.
Happy Birthday, Skipper, and I hope you enjoyed a good Veteran's Day, despite the city. |

Or else it just pushes the wet smutz up into your driveway skirt. Where I live there's hardly ever anything in the gutters anyway. It's a scam for sure. |

To: Felix Mendoza Jr., Captain, USMC, Long Beach
Captain Mendoza, Thankyou so much for you service to our great country. My Family and I are greatfull for all you have done. I am saddened by your forced donation to the city budget, however please rest assured that even I, A Hospice Nurse who works out in the field got a ticket by the City of Los Angeles, when I explained why I was parked on the street and showed them my ID that says "HOSPICE", the kind person said that "(he) I cant take you (me) spending time with a dying person as an excuse for parking 20 minutes past time for street sweeping!".......I was even wearing my scrubs and had my nursing bag, even offered to show him my credentials....my ticket is 60.00. |

I was in the animal shelter on Spring St recently to get a dog license and was pleased to see all the people who were adopting dogs. The lobby area of the shelter was so full of people and dogs, it was standing room only. I shared my sentiments with the one of the shelter workers. She sadly looked up at me and told me the people were actually returning the dogs. She also told me they get more returns than they do adoptions. I too applaud the animal shelter for its rigorous screening process and can now understand why.

on Coronado Ave. between PCH and 17th streets i watched parking enforcement pass cars starting at PCH and when he got to the last car he placed a citation on the car the young man on active duty in the NAVY had only pulled up 5 minutes earlier to pick up his girlfriend.why was that?

It should be noted that LB Animal Control licenses animals, responds to trouble calls, and - sadly - is forced to euthanize unwanted animals. Animal adoption is handled by spcaLA housed in the Pritchford Companion Village. Adoption rules are prepared and enforced by spcaLA. A number of my friends were denied a dog because they stated the animal would be an outside and inside dog. Apparently, a dog spending the day in a fenced backyard is not acceptable. Cat adoptions are strictly to indoor only homes. I applaud the good folks at spcaLA for their dedication; however, they are not the ones having to euthanize the animals denied a loving home. spcaLA is blissfully unconcerned with the unreasonableness of their rules. After all, they don't have to deal with the consequences.
