This is not right. I have lived in this area for years and have never seen nor felt racial tensions. Who ever is doing this needs to leave - they are not welcomed in this area where many people of many backgrounds come together as friends and families. We like Shiloh, and don't want any of this stupidity showing it's ugly face here.

This is amazing his shows how racist this area is. If there is a crime commited by some minority the comments don't stop. Let there be a hate crime such as this, you have one individual. This is just prove that individuals don't care about freedom, race, equality in this America. This is just so disapointing to us in the military. That were serving for your freedom. What freedom.

I completely agree with you. It is sad that when some black girls get caught stealing, there are 4 pages of comments about the color of their skin, but when crosses get burned in someone's yard, no one thinks twice about it. It makes me sick really. As a white person, I would hate for anyone to put me in the same category as these ignorant people who are burning crosses. I am sure that is how A LOT of black people feel when they are discriminated against because of the black crime in the area. Thank you to Amazing for fighting for our country......just because there are a FEW people who are racist and stupid, doesn't mean we are all like that. It is frustrating, but most of the people in the area are GOOD people....you just have the few bad one's (who come in every color) that are giving us a bad rep.

It wasn't a fence. It was a gait that the Signal Hill residents had erected because they were sick of thugs, coming up the hill and ransacking their homes. But, of course, it got turned into a racial issue. It had to do with the mentality of the people, not the color of their skin. Made headlines on 60 minutes. I guess, it would be better for home owners to have guns. That way, when a thug breaks into your home, you can shoot them. Then, the crime might stop.

Correct.

The gate was placed on an entrance to the Signal Hill neighborhood. This particular entrance was off of Highway 157. Signal Hill was still accessible from South 95th St., as well as Foley Drive, and a couple of other secondary entrances.

As mentioned, the purpose of the gate was to limit access to the area, after a string of crimes, one of which was, if memory serves, a home invasion involving sexual assault. I don't recall if these crimes were gone into in any detail by the "60 Minutes" people.

The gates were not even located in the city limits of Belleville. As I mentioned in another thread, Belleville mayor Richard Brauer had his own video crew document much of the interviewing of city officials by "60 Minutes."

As I recall, the impression created by the version edited by "60 Minutes" was quite different from the impression one had after viewing all of the mayor's raw footage.

Signal Hill is right on the edge of West Main and Edgmont Hill. Edgemont starts where West Main and 157 intersect. It is the dividing factor between Belleville and ESL. I really don't know if the gate is up or was taken down. I can't elaborate on that.

Let me tell you the word about the cross burning is all around the Base judging from the posts I read on this stie it seems that the local whites are scared to death of the blacks wound here, and fear and lack of understanding breeds ignorance there are more than a few racists in the area around Scott AFB. They all seem to be ready to pounce when some one of color does something wrong. I really hope its just a few racists crazies posting on here the more I read the more I will keep my eyes open when shopping off base.

It's crazy how racist some people are. It also cracks me up that people are so blind to ALL white crime. I keep seeing all these facts on black crime, but no one is mentioning any of the white crime in the area, and believe me, it's there! Your right aout the ignorance thing....it is so sad to read some of these posts.

About 10-15 years ago, the former owner of the only tavern in Shiloh once told a civil service employee not to bring his black friend into the bar. The incident made the News Democrat and as a result the base commander placed the tavern off-limits.

Funny you mentioned that Jay the base actually "sends out" people to apply for apartments and some couples may be of different races and some may be of the same race and if they are treated differently or given different prices (ie. giving the white couple a cheaper rate) the complex is put off limits.

I just wanted to post this. And that I totaly disagree with the base CC's remarks. It's evident that he is not in touch with this community. Maybe he should read the racists remarks on this forum. Wow. I can't believe something like this happened . I'm ust disgusted with this area! I'n my 20 some years serving in the military I've never felt such a hate that I notice in this area. I would just thank this community for welcoming service members stationed at Scott AFB in this manner. I'm sure the individuals who are deployed at this time are able to focus just so much more on their task at hand when they realize what there loved ones have to deal with in his or her absence. Again thank you so much for making me understand what I'm fighting for.
in our area Burning cross found on lawn of Airman Staff writerPosted : Wednesday Dec 19, 2007 12:30:14 EST Top of Form 1 Bottom of Form An Airman at Scott Air Force Base, Ill., was the victim of a possible hate crime.Police found a burning cross on the airman's front lawn in the town ofBelleville, just outside the base, on Dec. 8.Neither the police nor base officials released the airman's name, though areport in the Belleville News-Democrat cited a neighbor who said an airmanand his wife lived in the home where the cross was burned.A statement from the Belleville Police Department said the cross was about 5feet tall, made of wooden two-by-fours. The bottom two feet of the crosswere burned when police arrived on scene, and racial epithets were writtenon the cross in black marker, the statement said. A neighbor reported thecrime to police while the airman was not at home."KKK" and "white power" were written on the cross, the News-Democrat quotedPolice Chief William Clay as saying. The FBI will assist in the BPD's investigation of the incident, the police'sstatement said.Col. Al Hunt, commander of Scott's 375th Airlift Wing, issued this statementon the matter:"The cross burning incident is absolutely deplorable and not indicative ofthe true climate of the surrounding Scott communities. Local neighborhoodslike Belleville and Shiloh have been enriched by Joint Total Force Scott'sdiversity and have embraced every opportunity to welcome us, regardless ofour race, religious preference, political party, or gender."Additionally, Scott Air Force Base is working with officials in the localcommunity to prevent future occurrences like this. The safety and securityof our service members both on and off base is always a top priority."

It was not around part of the town just one side street. It might have been Bluff Rd. off of 157. It was a gate. They thought it was being used as entrance and escape route to commit crimes in the Signal Hill area. Barry Biehl was the police chief I think that was interviewed by 60 minutes.

No the gate is still up. The residents have cards to use to open the gates up to enter from Hwy 157. Remember that there was also an issue regarding police and fire protection if they had to enter that area from Hwy 157 but don't remember what the outcome was.
