Who cares about the EPA's emission standards? A generator is used so infrequently I'd just run it dirty. You using Yamas at the ranch AC?

all im implicatin' is that i buy all sorts of brand new coleman generators, tents, ez-up canopies-n-stuff for pennies on the dollar from classifieds or even goodwill...i never ask where the bought the stuff err nuttin'...but without fail the best deals are always from police, fire chiefs, or teachers who i assume the bring the stuff home from werk, until they run out of room, then peddle it out on the cheap..

i can see the LoCo lawyers and judges now dreamin' watt their going to salvage from the soon to be demolished c-house..they just take it home with them like it's nobodys business....

i better go baste my baby back rib racks now.....Baby!

From my experience, I would advise no one to by a GUARDIAN, manufactured in America by ENRAC POWER SYSTEMS, IN WI. I purchased a 17kW in April of 2009. It has been run less than 50 hours prior to the recent storm. Prior to the storm, the machine had given some trouble and required a part, which the manufacturer provided at no charge, but billed me for a service call & the labor. During the storm, it ran for a few hours & died. The copper fields that surround the armeture are following out in the below pan, and as a result, the machine will produce no elecricity. Of course, the three year limited warranty has just recently expired. I will be contacting the company to see if they will give me some consideration, but I am not opimistic. If they come through with some help, I will let you know. Also, I know there are several other such machines in the area that have the same problem.

No, it's assembled, maybe manufactured in Wisconsin.

The first 72 hours of operation are critical for new mechanical and electrical equipent. When you buy a new generator, TV or what-not you should run it straight for at least three consecutive days. The same goes for any replacement parts supplied by the manufacturer or distributor. After that three day break-in period your chances are pretty good. Just to be on the safe side, I would repeat the brea-in test about a month before the warranty is due to expire. That's the time to catch any components that need replacement. You snooze you lose.

I don't see a problem with portable gas generators ( http://thepowerbwithu.com ). They can be very useful. I'm actually looking for a new set.

I am a little skeptical of the value of portable generators that you will maybe use once in 10 years. They are heavy and bulky. It takes a bit of struggling to get them from storage into a location away from the house where they can be run safely. Then you have to run extension cords from the generator to various appliances inside the house. All this often has to be done in rain and darkness. Meanwhile you don't know if some problem may have developed within the unit during the years it has been in storage. Do you have reliable gasoline on hand that hasn't gone stale? For the most part outages are repaired within two to three hours after you call them in. Is that worth all the hassle?

If you are going to do it, the thing to do would be to install the generator permanently in a weather-proof housing at a distance from the home. Have the cables run underground into the house to the electrical panel. Use approved disconnects so the generator is never connected to the incoming power lines. Personally I favor natural gas or propane units over gasoline-fueled generators.

As an afterthought, I believe I would line my weather-proof enclosure with galvanized steel rabbit cage wire mesh to keep out mice and other pests. If you elect to go with a self-starter, make some provision for keeping the storage battery topped off with a solar panel or a float charger attached to the house electrical wiring. There are generator systems that will self-start whenever power from the grid falters. If they are fed from natural gas or your propane tank, they will continue to run for as long as needed.

Being on co-op,I don't use my generator very often. Now for the people with DP@L,get one!!!My generator gets more use by other people.

You don't have to have the state of the art full house generator.3000w-6000w will suffice. Most modern gennys start up on the 1st couple pulls.

The main thing with a basic emergency generator,is trying to hook up the central heat during the wintertime and country folk have well pumps. You can't easily hook those up to a plain extension cord.

You don't have to mess with a lot of cords either. You can get a transfer switch installed.Another option is called the generlink collar which fits under your meter.Either of those installed, then choose which circuits you wanna run and shut off the rest.Prices for both should be close unless you have a buddy that is a certified electrician for the transfer switch option. You'll have to pray to see if your electric supplier will allow the generlink collar.LC CO-OP highly recommends the generlink and will install it for you in under 15 mins.

http://www.generlink.com/about_generlink.cfm

Keep stabilizer in the gas in all your outdoor gasoline engines.Stabil lasts 6 months,Gunk lasts 12 months.Run the genny once a month.Keep a couple gas cans full just in case. You can always dump the gas in your car and just re-fill with fresh gas at the next trip to the gas station.Keep those other gas engine items like lawnmower, tillerATV,Golf cart, etc full of stabilized gas and you could always siphon out the gas to use in an emergency.

I highly recommend a clear gas hose for the siphoning!!

NP, thanks for the info on GenerLink. That sounds like a very reasonable and safe way to go. I'll contact the electrical engineers at DP&L and see what their attitude is.
