ANTA FE, N.M.-- The Santa Fe County jail warden was caught on camera imitating a hanging and laughing about it.
A picture shows Warden David Trujillo wearing his badge and holding a noose over a former coworker's head. Santa Fe County Jail Director Annabelle Romero said she didn't know about the photo until Action 7 News showed it to her. Romero said she's disappointed, because suicide is an issue in jails that the staff takes very seriously. "I want them to know we do everything in our power to prevent suicide and that we care," Romero said. The warden will talk to his staff and let them know that type of behavior is unacceptable, according to Romero. It's possible that the warden will face disciplinary action. SANDOVAL COUNTY, N.M.-- Two suicides were reported at the Sandoval County Detention Center just days apart last week, and now an internal review is underway.
According to county officials, Kenneth Traiger and Stephen Vincent both hung themselves last week. They said Traiger used a ripped sheet and Vincent used his shoelaces. The facility has had only one other suicide since the early 90s. A county spokesperson told Action 7 News, "We're committed to making sure this doesn't happen again." He also said it's possible that admission procedures could change, including the policy to let inmates keep shoes with shoelaces. Inmates undergo a psychiatric evaluation when they move into the jail. County officials said neither Traiger nor Vincent was thought to be suicidal after that evaluation. Vincent was in jail on charges of sexually abusing a child, while Traiger was in jail on a bank robbery charge. Read more: http://www.koat.com/news/30018846/detail.html... |

A 47-year-old Los Lunas woman has been indicted on a charge of involuntary manslaughter after police said she helped contribute to the death of an inmate last year at the Central New Mexico Correctional Facility in Los Lunas.
Department of Corrections spokesman Shannon McReynolds said Sheri L. Stone was charged after she mailed a letter to inmate Joseph Segura that contained Suboxone, a drug know for mitigating the effects of withdrawal from heroin. McReynolds said Stone sent the inmate two watercolor drawings that contained the drug, which Segura ingested while he was housed at the correctional facility. “It was something that he was able to lick off of the paper,” McReynolds said. The drawings looked as if they had been drawn by a child and were of a bright yellow duck and one that had the sun with a stick figure that read,“I love you daddy,” according to McReynolds. Stone is also charged with bringing contraband onto prison grounds, conspiracy to commit bringing contraband onto prison grounds and distribution of a controlled substance. Segura died of an overdose on Feb. 19, 2010. McReynolds said officials didn’t know the drug could be ingested at the time of Segura’s death. “Remember, this is a new phenomenon,” McReynolds said.“Now, we know what to look for.” |

KOB Eyewitness News 4 has questions about security in the wake of this weekend’s escape of a prisoner from the state prison in Los Lunas.
Prisoner David Mansfield was allowed to work on state prison property, feeding cattle on the prison’s 1,800 acre farm. Early Saturday morning, he walked off the farm and escaped. Mansfield, 54, was captured Sunday afternoon. He had fallen asleep inside a car for sale at a Los Lunas car dealership. But we talked to a neighbor of the prison who says Mansfield’s escape comes as no surprise to him. Richard Goheen, who lives right across the street from the prison, said he’s seen inmates outside and unsupervised plenty of times. “At least one or two occasions I've seen them out here without a guard - even further up the road, a quarter mile up the road and they were unsupervised - no guard, no anything,” Goheen said. Goheen said he was so concerned he drove into the prison facility – both to complain and to test their security. “There was no guard, there was no gate, the gate wasn't closed - nothing. I drove my truck right on in right up to the front door and walked on in and I asked a guard what was going on, how come there wasn't any supervision out there and he said; 'Oh heck some of these guys have been here so long they can do whatever they want'." We asked prison officials how Mansfield was able to escape. “We had one of our officers call looking for him saying he hadn't reported in so that's when we went to go look for him and he had walked away from the facility,” said prison spokesman Ken Sandlin. We asked Sandlin if Mansfield’s escape is making prison officials re-evaluate security. “Anytime we have an escape or walk-a-way like this type, we will review every policy,” he said. Goheen said he hopes that review will mean more security for inmates working on and off prison grounds. “It's still a penitentiary and people need to be kept safe from the people who are on the other side of this wall,” he said. Mansfield was charged with escape and is being held temporarily at the Valencia County Jail. His escape could add even more time to the four years he is already serving for embezzlement and car theft. |
