Nice editing, Associated Press. Your headline, I mean. "Police use meat cleaver to kill man." Am I the only one who sees this?

Because it happened inside a temple, police may have had to abide by kosher rules in bringing down the suspect.

Dispatch Web Editor- I read the headline the same way as Ed from Up North and Columbus Resident- I was wondering when police were allowed to use meat cleavers as weapons.

Tasers and Mace not available, or working? Was it really necessary to gun this guy down?

Try using the word "wielding", as in "Police kill man wielding meat cleaver..."

Yes it is necessary to respond to a suspect that is using deadly force with deadly force. I don't know about you, but I am not going to bet my life that the mace will stop him (I can shoot and fight after being sprayed with mace) or that the taser will work effectively on the suspect. If you are willing to needlessly risk your own life, step right up. www.odmp.org has many police officers killed in the line of duty because they decided to use a taser or other inappropriate level of force during a lethal force situation.

A meat cleaver is a really good weapon in one of the Mafia Wars locations. Maybe the cops were collecting a bounty from the hitlist ;o/

There is an saying in my parts "Don't bring a knife to a gun fight" Maybe that applies to the greater Cleveland area too.

Seriously, if some has a knife they can close the distance damn fast and thus become leathal. Many times Knife user get shot because it is not worth the risk to the officer to try a non leathal tool only to end up dead or permanetly mamed. I beleive shooting him was the right choice to take. I typical7y am anti tax collecting doughnut eater ( you call them cops).

So, no answer to my question about mace or tasers? How many times have you tried to "shoot and fight after being sprayed with mace?" Is this a regular weekend thing with you?

Oh, and is there a website showing us how many times cops used EXCESSIVE force in such a situation? Or would you just prefer not to read that one?

God, give it a rest. You probably are one of those guys that think cops should "shoot to wound".

This clown came at them showing that he intended to use deadly force. That's what a meat cleaver is, idiot, deadly force. Police are entitled to match deadly force with deadly force. Nothing requires them to wait until the thing is buried in their forehead before they protect themselves. If he had come at them with a tire iron, it's a lot closer call. A billy club ? No way. But a meat cleaver ???? Come on, dude, quit smelling your ganja weed and smell the coffee instead.

Everytime you arrest a suspect and somebody uses mace, you end up fighting after being contaminated with mace. There are many other factors to look at here. In this case the officer was alone, and the suspect was rushing towards him. If the taser or mace was ineffective what do you suppose would happen? Police officers are not paid to take stupid chances with their own life. They have the same right that you would had this individual charged you with a knife. The same right to defend themselves. Are there occasions that officers use excessive force, of course there are. Hopefully those officers are properly punished when they do. Based on the information given in this article, it does not appear that this is a case like that. A knife wielding suspect that rushes a gun wielding officer will get shot. I could see using a taser if there was another officer there that had a gun out in case it was ineffective, but this officer was flagged down and his backup had not arrived yet. He had to act to protect the public from the danger and harm the armed suspect presented. Lets remember the real point to this story, the suspect, not the officer decided what was going to happen in this case. He could have easily put the knife down or not charged a police officer. Had he done either of those he might not have chosen to die.

I wasn't there, and neither were you. No one's saying they should let the guy "bury it in their forehead," of course.

Think about the words "mace" and "taser" some more, and get back to me with a real reply.

You imply that he was making a serious, informed choice, not a guy in the grip of rage and possible mental illness.

I'm calling for an investigation, and I'm sure there will be one. Let's hope it clears things up and doesn't simply whitewash this apparent execution.

I understood what you meant but it does sound funny when pointed out the other way. This could be a good one for Jay Leno's Headlines!

Daily Horoscope for May 23

Aries

You're idealistic and impressionable today, and want to see the best in everyone. Look straight past their faults, pretending they aren't there; concentrate on their good points instead. If a new relationship gets off the ground now it will always be characterized by an aura of romance and fantasy, and a slightly otherworldly quality.
