Why is this even a debate? its her own fault shes fat, they didnt have an extrs seat, it has nothing to do with race, and the airline already has a policy in place. Whats the debate about? If she is too fat to fly in one seat, she either abides by the airlines rules or stays home.

This is ridiculous! How did this even become a story?
You people using racism? So if a chinese lady, an indian lady or white lady of large size get charged for 2 seats then we are being racist toward them? I love black people. But this is insulting.
Airlines sell the product by the seat and also more weight means more fuel burned. What was oil today?$118? Sorry, if you take two seats, you pay for two seats. The person sitting next to you has a right to his/her little space also? If we follow this logic, then lets charge less for smaller people because they take up less space.
Get over it people. It's a non issue
If a court doesn't throw this out, I just lost faith in the justice system!

I feel sorry for her but it's only fair. Because one time when I was flying I saw a sistah who was taking up 2 seats as well, and they had the arm up. It was on the window isle that had three seats. There was nobody sitting next to her, but if 2 people wanted to sit there, only one could.

Wow, this has nothing to do with race! She IS extremely heavy, she had to pay for an extra ticket because she could not fit in a regular seat. That's it, end of story. Nobody was at fault besides this woman, because she was the only one making a fuss about EVERYTHING! As far as I am concerned, she embarrassed herself - END OF STORY!

She needs to pay for two seats if she is taking up two seats simple as that. If you book a double room in a hotel and it is just you you pay for a double room. I think this woman should be investing her time in Jenny Craig instead of bringing media attention to her big ass. I know two people personally that are very large and have had to pay for two seats. One of them being my husband. My husband paid for two seats because he took up two seats simple math isn't it? She needs to run around that block a few times and quit crying like a damn baby. Lose weight before she purchases another ticket(S)..lol

And I think some comments here are offensive regarding jenny craig etc. Obesity is largely due to the pituitary (sorry for the spelling) gland and is a disease, not a result of eating etc. But some people can control it if they tried. But this is not the issue. You have 2-3 seats in a row. Now, I have been assigned a seat in the middle between two obese people. They both are in my seat basically and I have maybe 60% of space left. Is that fair to me? No. Should the other person have bought a second seat so they don't intrude on another person? YES! Did sue the airline? No. But I have the right to my little space also. I hope this get tossed out of court in a hard way.

I appreciate the Southwest policy. I fly them often and nothing is worse than being squished by a fatty....but, if there was no one in the seat next to her in the back of the aircraft, where is the need to humiliate her. Southwest can go overboard and does apply its rules on a whim.

pure crap wrote: Southwest airlines had a reality show that was on cable a few years ago and on their show there was a white woman who was also clearly overweight and they told her she had to purchase two seats. and no matter how much she cried, stompped and cursed the ticket agent they told her if she was going to get on their plane she was going to need to purchase two tickets. She even went as far as to claim she didn't have any more money for a second ticket. To which they offered her a full refund so she can take her money to another airline that didn't have the same policy and fly with them. when she realized they weren't playing with her she got her mother on the phone and used her credit card to purchase the second ticket. and all of this was caught on the reality show they had centered around their airline about two years or so ago. so for this woman to number one, act like this is so unexpected and out of the blue. The airlines have had the right to do this for years and made it public when they began to do it in the begining. Number two, she's stupid to come out and say it was because she was black without doing her research anyone who would have watched the show back then would clearly be able to throw the race card out the window and I hope a judge throws her case out along with it. FAT IS FAT IT DOESN'T MAKE A DIFFERENCE WHAT COLOR YOU ARE. I feel that if she can produce a valid note from her Dr. stating her condition is caused by something other than overeating & lack of exercise. Then yes she should be excused from buying the second ticket and be given the extra seat just like they would make spical seating arrangements for any other passenger with a medical condition. Or reduced prices for people who are traveling due to a death in their family(to which they would have to produce a copy of the person's death certificate on thier return trip) but if she's just plan ole fat for fat's sake then she should take some of that money she uses for food and buy her second seat when she's ready to take her fat show on the road. and in case any of you are wondering, yes I am a woman of color, I'm not fat by any means but my best friend is over 300 lbs. due to simple overeating and lack of exercise. She simply doesn't fly airlines that would make her buy two seats. she's inteligent enough to check with an airline BEFORE purchasing a ticket to keep from puting herself in such an embarrising position. and also realizes that no one whats to be squished up by her fat coming over the seat at them either. People doen't just wake up one day and their too big for airline seats. They are very much aware of their size before they decided to travel. So instead of suing an airline she should take the money she's paying the lawyer and buy a gym membership!! Out of the many comments that I've read on this article, yours is most likely the most intelligent and insightful. Let's put away the racial deck of cards and base our words and actions on truth. On a personal note, it's fascinating to me the cross-section of Americana that one experiences when observing the many different opinions on a subject such as this. By the way, she probably is just a stupid fatass. Just my opinion.

Easiest way to say it, "Quitcher Bitchin" if you don't like the rules, don't fly. I have a very good friend that is slightly over 425 pounds, and he does the obvious, finds a different mode of transportation.

And, please be smart enough not make a comment about an entire race becuase of one misguided individual. You are just as misguided as she, if that is truly how you feel. People playing the race card help to worsen the problem also. One gets tired of hearing such claims when they, in fact, have nothing to do with a supposed problem. It hurts the person who really does have a racial issue.
