Hi-
Nice site. I'm looking for a list of York Co. buildings under either local or national protection. Is there nothing down in Shrewsbury twp?
It seems to me that the old Ehrhart Tavern/Inn should be on some preservation list. It was willed by the emigrant J.Wilhelm Ehrhart to his oldest son Thomas in 1781. Thomas seems to have enlarged it as his name is up near the roof & is dated 1791. Thomas died in 1799 leaving it to his oldest son John. A big celebration was held there at the election of a Pennsylvania Dutch (German) governor, as recorded in Gibson's history. John died in 1825 & I have not researched what happened to it then.
J. Wilhelm's original acreage in 1753 was a strange shape to include several springs with their ensuing creeks - & a long stretch along a road labelled "Road from Yorktown to Maryland." Surely where he built the tavern/inn. Named neighboring landowners were Ernest Olp, Michael Myer & Henry Hease/Nease/Kease.
It appears that they made at least some of their own liquors as the 1781 will listed the still by the apple trees, which would have been for the distilling of apple(& other fruit) wine into schnapps.
The beautiful, stone building appears to be still in great shape & I'm told is occupied as apartments. It is certainly large enough to have been an overnight stop for travelers along the old Susquehanna Trail, not so far from the Maryland border. Perhaps a day's ride from York at the time?
Why isn't it a historic preservation?
sincerely,

Evedene Bennett,

I think you're looking for buildings on the National Register of Historic Places.

http://www.nationalregisterofhistoricplaces.c...

The newspaper doesn't place buildings on the National Register. Either a land owner or people with interest in a site do the research and apply for National Register status.
