Liggett refiles $159M lawsuit over failed Brownsville real estate plan

I used to live in Brownsville and as far as I can see ,the Liggett's let their properties rot.

They deserved every citation they got and more.

Try doing the same thing in Monroeville and see what happens.

The main difference between Brownsville and Monroeville is money.

Monroeville has a tax base that wouldn't stand by and let speculation destroy it's infrastructure through neglect and apathy.

This is just another stalling tactic to drag it out in the courts,hoping that this bankrupt town will not be able to fight this out in court.

Evil and greedy are two of the terms that come to mind whenever I read about the Liggert's and what they have done to that small quaint town.

The people of this town tried to show some pride by trying to force the Liggert's to maintain their dilapidated properties from falling down and injuring people.

Until someone can find an economic purpose for those buildings to be there, they will be a liability to the owner, no matter who it is.

Liggett gambled on gambling and he lost that bet. All he wants now is to get out of town and salvage what he can. He won't sink anymore money into property that has no reason to exist today.

Give him his money back and he's outta the game. Approve gaming and he'll put a new face on the Neck.

I wish I could get the big money back that I invested in GM stocks and bonds. When you gamble, you sometimes lose.

If I remember correctly,some of those buildings actually had tenets until they were forced out by rent hikes and not renewing leases by the new property owners.

Those tenets then moved up to the 166/40 crossroads to newer buildings(Doctors and businesses) instead of staying in buildings that they were no longer welcome to occupy.

I know the local state rep for the area and according to that person,unless the puritan middle of the state voters go along with riverboat gambling,it's never going to happen.
Only the Philly and Pgh areas want it.

If Liggert wants out ,sell it to somebody who is willing to try a different approach.

NAFTA and such have killed that area and brought forth this wave of south of the border immigration that plagues many of the border states.

1 out of 10 people in California are now illegals.In the area I'm in(SF Bay),it's more like 2 or 3.

There are many reasons for Fayette county's demise and hoping for gambling as a silver bullet to end it's woes ,is a pipe dream.

I have no connection to Liggett, but I'll bet he would take half of what he paid for any of those buildings right now.

It was the private automobile that spiraled Brownsville down to a ghost town and it started in 1947. The shopping patterns changed as the auto became the preferred transportation. That change severly crippled the public transportation systems all over America and spawned first the strip malls and then the enclosed malls with acres of free parking.

Later Walmart* converted the business districts in 100s of small American towns into second hand stores and store front churches. Illegals had nothing to do with that.

I can list many reasons for the decline of Fayette Co and environs and illegals played no role, but I find it impossible to envision a single reason why anyone would start a business in downtown Brownsville that would attract clients from outside the immediate area in numbers large enough to cause a resurgence. I really wish I could.

Liggett is not going to put any more money into those buildings and BARC will eventually become the new owners and they will have to think of a way to keep them from the wrecking ball. Good Luck.

Make Liggett an offer....any offer and you can own a derelict and find a reason why it should still be there, but I wouldn't do that because I have not been able to think of one.

My ancestors were among the earliest settlers and they are buried in the Friend's Cemetery on Cadwallader St. with 58 other Quakers in unmarked graves. The first burial there was in 1795 and the last was in 1854. The cemetery is a playground today.
