Exploring war relic's tie to isles - Hawaii Features

Full story: Honolulu Star-Bulletin

"There comes a time in every rightly constructed boy's life," mused Mark Twain, "when he has a raging desire to go somewhere and dig for hidden treasure." Civil War relic hunters are a special breed.

Return the coins and pin to Hawaii so that it can be taxed and we can save state worker jobs. I command thee to obey! Obey I say.

Being that it was dug up by some relic collector Id be suspicious of the accuracy that it has anything to do with Hawaii....could be a bust of any bloody Civil War general...they all had beards and receding hair lines...
for criminees sake.

No.
I think it was put there by George Ariyoshi, in an effort to avoid paying import duty.

Looks very similar to this painting of Liholiho, including the flower like pins on his jacket.

Or it was a soldier who met Liholiho, as he was there in 1850 in that general area on a diplomatic mission... Coincidentally, the battle occurred the year Liholiho died.

It's of an African King, go look it up. Royalty from Africa wear the same items.

Great Article Burl B !!
I look forward to hearing serious replies, in an effort to possibly pinpointing the historical significance of the bronze bust found at the Hansborough Ridge Civil War Site in Virginia. Also, whether or not one of the 25 known Native Hawaiian Soldiers that served with the Union Army could have been responsible for placing the coin purse “that contained the Bust” it in the wall of that winter hut there in 1863.

The 1847 large cent was the only coin with a hole in it. At times it was common to wear a coin with your birthdate however this was usually done with children or women. If so the owner of these coins could have been as young as 15 or 16 years old? Maybe a drummer boy or file marker? It is also possible that the coin purse which contained the cape pin could have been stolen and hidden? Since most of the deaths occured by disease and the site was fairly close to a hospital could yet again yield some clues? It may be possible to pinpoint a regiments or companies position during the 1862-63 site which since they know exactly where the purse was found. I suspect the owner of the purse may have been born in 1847 and knowing the location might be able to determine the regiment and hospital records could reveal the deaths of soldiers in the area. I would think that this soldier whoever he was might have been in the State Volunteers as oposed to regular U.S. army because of the cape pin. Because of the heavy influence of the Irish one might want to look in that direction?

Mr. Brooke may be correct in suggesting the Irish influence. It is possible that the cape pin may well be that of Sergeant-Major John Lucas of the 40th Regiment,an Irish recipient of the Victoria Cross. The Victoria Cross is regarded as the most prestigious award for gallantry in the face of the enemy that can be awarded to British and Commonwealth forces.

Mr. Whitcomb brings up a valid issue however in speaking to many Civil War collectors they have been able to at least convince me that the item in question although it might look like a cape-pin may NOT be one. Serious research with countless hours involved may provide a clue? For right now assuming this or that will only lead one down a wrong road. Theories should be valid have have something to be based upon. Having said this a connection to Hawaii seems be be an extreme long shot. Perhaps someday another such like item will surface that may provide some insight as to its origin. From prior research of the great American Civil War, it is of my opinion that the soldiers tended to be younger than what most of us realize and that many of them were first generation Americans if not foreign born.

Actually, I think it looks like King Kalakaua. I always wondered where he got all those medals, sashes and military decorations.
