A poll on a ballot would tell the council exactly what the public wants. If the majority of the public wants a ban, then it would have to be law. Or if it went the other way it would have to be law. Sounds like a democratic action. Thought that was the way it's supposed to be. Not the opinions or the feelings of the council but the way the public wants it. Like they did in New York lets get rid of half of the council and save some money and get things done right.

You need read the first sentence again. It is a "non-binding" poll. It will be merely a survey, nothing else; but, it seems like a good way to find out the sentiments of residents regarding the sale and use of fireworks. It should be interesting to see if voters take this opportunity to send a message -- yes or no on fireworks -- to the mayor and councilors.

Honestly, how much do you believe the town collects in fireworks sales each year? Remember, the town only receives a fraction of the 6 or 7 percent of the sales tax on each dollar.

I have been a life long resident of silver city and have seen alot of change the last few years. one of the big movements is this firework ban. with all the other real problems that are present in silver city such as the large number of robberies from businesses and homes the huge drug problem among all age groups the massive amounts of unemployment the unneccesary monoply and over priceing of gas an unrealistic cost of living the low wages. the priceing of all the locals out to make room for retired people and non native residents the list can go on and on. but no the important thing is fireworks that is what the city governments efforts need to be spent on . fortunatly they will take true public input into account rather than decid based on personal bias lets just hope the word the word the question properly and not in a deceiving manner as we have seen before

If I had my druthers I would ban fireworks all together by the public. I support a show supplied by the town/city. But since there is not such an option, I support the council's plan.

I suggest we take our own poll. Those who live in Silver City and are registered voters, how would you vote in this poll? Yes to ban fireworks, or No to keep the law as it stands today? Remember, only recently, the council voted in a new law that limits the number of days that fireworks can be sold and set off. Also understand that only registered voters should vote because only they will be permitted to vote in the real survey during the city election.

This should be interesting. Let's run this poll through November 30. On December 1, we will tally the votes, both for the ban and against it.

Don't cheat. You have to be a registered voter in Silver City. If you vote, I guess we will just take you at your word that you are a registered voter in Silver.

I forgot to vote. I vote "Yes" to ban personal use of fireworks in Silver City.

CB, we agree on many issues found here in topix, but on this one, I vote "No" on banning fireworks.

Daily Horoscope for December 19

Gemini

Maybe it's pre-Christmas tension but people can turn nasty in the blink of an eye today. This is especially likely if they've got a lot on their plate or they think they're very important, and you may have to treat them with kid gloves if you want to avoid getting sucked into a bad-tempered war of words. Some gentle humor may help to rescue the situation before it descends into acrimony.
