Ford's increase in sales is because they are producing cars that are of a quality to compete with the Toyota and Honda's of the world. The other Detroit auto maker's have not got it yet.

GM had to go to China to get a small car and Chrysler does not have cars that the American public as a whole want. I agree with someone who said about the foreign manufacturers producing cars made by American workers, just not UAW workers. Personally I am very happy with cars made by Nissan, Toyota and Honda and will continue to purchase those cars. I have a saying, if it ain't broke, don't fix it. Mine ain't ever been broke.

I just saw a story on BusinessWeek.com about Ford's success.
The number one vehicle traded in was the gas guzzling Ford Explorer.
Focus sales are up 44%
Fusion sales were up 66%
Escape sales were up 95%
Total Ford Hybrids were up 323%
All versus 2008 sales

Finally the estimated gas savings over 3,000,000 barrels of oil.
Ford must be doing something right compared to the other 2 Detroit companies.

Yes, of course-they actually moved with the times and created vehicles people wanted. I didn't exactly think Ford had it with them, but I'm pleased that people are voting with their wallets.

And after so many months of no one buying cars, I'm so glad that consumer confidence has improved. It will likely have a positive impact on other markets.

Sorry, my mistake. I'll admit when I'm wrong. Thank you for pointing out my error.

The Strib's article claims that's the cause but we all know better, don't we. Ford is being rewarded by car buyers for not taking the government money.

Agreed, I talked to a Ford dealer a couple weeks ago and said the Ford Edge will probably be our next car and one of the main reasons was because Ford did not take bailout money

One of the lessons here is that all recessions eventually end because people NEED to buy things to replenish inventories and to replace worn out things. There's no need for government to get involved, and in fact, when they do, it actually delays the inevitable recovery.

This recession is now 18 months old. It should have been over 6 months ago.

There is really some interesting dynamics taking place in this country right now dealing with the automobile industry. What you are saying speaks volumes about how these other two companies really screwed up their own business and never adapted to the changing times. On the other hand Ford management saw what was occurring and changed their business plan to fit the changing consumer mood. Right now GM and Chrysler cannot compete with Ford and their Fusion, Focus or Escape or for that matter any hybrid vehicle.
I have never been a Ford supporter, but I am impressed with the way they have been able to produce cars the American people want and yet still have their popular F150.
Now if they could only apply that effort to saving the Ranger.
