Had the government done what you suggest, other than Ford, the program would have been called "Clunker for Clunker" Let's face both GM and Chrysler are not brands that come to mind when you think fuel efficency.

2 Well, other than the bombing of Kadafi's home, which ended up killing his family, and we never heard from him again! |

2 On the other hand, that Silverado/Yukon/Suburban was made mostly in Mexico. Trainloads of frames, engines and drive trains are hauled to the US factory for the finishing touches. So, which vehicles are American-made ? |

1 'Lebanon' and 'Libya' are two different countries. I don't think Quadaffi was ever connected to the Beirut bombing in any way. He's a nut, but that wasn't his doing. |

Gaddafi is the leader of Libya. I wasn't aware of his link to the bombing in Lebanon. Where can I find more info on that? |

Bruce H. Bentson: The CARS program is for ANY vehicle that gets a combined MPG of 22 or greater. It's sad if American cars don't get that. It's a signal to American auto companies that people are flocking to buy new cars that get a combined MPG greater than 22. Americans are voting with their (and the government's) dollar. Maybe the American auto companies will finally listen.
Details of the CARS program: http://www.cars.gov/index.php/faq#category-07 (combined fuel economy is about halfway down) |

Good point. The strib has an article about how Ford's sales have increased in June thanks to the CARS program: http://www.startribune.com/business/52359602.... |

1 The Strib's article claims that's the cause but we all know better, don't we. Ford is being rewarded by car buyers for not taking the government money. "46% More Likely To Buy Ford 'Cause It Didn't Get A Bailout" http://news.yahoo.com/s/rasmussen/20090727/pl... |

1 That's exactly why I bought a new F150! It is a great truck and can haul all the different trailers I have. It is the 1st Ford I have owned and am happy I bought one. The next rig I buy will be a Ford product also. |

1 Sorry, Mellers. I'm going to have to call a misfire on you. The CARS program did not start until July as indicated in the sentence below that I copied out of your Star-Tribune link. "Congress approved the plan early in July, but the government considered suspending it on Thursday after an overwhelming response threatened to deplete the $1 billion allocated for the rebates." Any increases in sales that Ford had in June is unrelated to the CARS program. Any increased sales that anybody has in July (and maybe August) will be offset by decreased sales in September, October, November, December which is the time frame in which these people were planning on buying these cars anyway. You are probably feeling good that your money is putting more fuel efficient cars on the road. I'm not feeling quite so good that my money is preventing low-income families from having affordable transportation for work, health care, groceries, etc. |

1 You know how I hate to be technical with you but technically, the government doesn't have any dollars of its own - its all Americans' dollars. |

1 I mis-wrote; yes, I meant to write July. Even the article mentions July (I think it was actually in the headline, but the wording of the headline has changed a bit). Again, yes, I meant to write that auto sales for Ford have improved for July, according to the Strib article: http://www.startribune.com/business/52359602.... "July sales of Ford, Lincoln, and Mercury light vehicles rose 1.6 percent from the same month last year." (I think the headline was something like this, this morning). Thanks for the catch, and the fairly respectful way of calling me on the error. I appreciate both. I too am not saying that we've achieved miracles in the economy here, but simply saying it has done 'some' good. |

Agreed. But you do get my point, and at least I acknowledged that the buying power people are using isn't just their own dollars-I was trying to be fair to recognize that. But heck, if that's the only criticism of my "cash for clunkers posts" then I must be doing oka! |
