Seems like people with "Aspergers" regard themselves as superior to people with Mild Autism. They should be ashamed of themselves!

Jim you are wrong. The parent of the Aspergers child is smearing children with autism by saying that her children would be ruined by being labeled autistic. She should be ashamed of herself. Where did you get your medical degree? They are all on the spectrum, that is why it is called a spectrum disorder. I think Brent was trying to say that the group looking down on another group should be ashamed, and they should be. Grow up Jim.

As a parent of a child with Asperger's Syndrome I am a bit concerned that many children will not be diagnosed properly. My son is very smart and often amazes me with his mind, but he is completely clueless when it comes to having relationships with others. This is just one of many issues an Asperger's child faces. I hope this is a change for the better!

as a teacher, who has all ranges of the spectrum in my class, I can assure you that changing the diagnosis will not change a thing. It is quite obvious that the same social issues are an issue. While some aspergers kids may be very smart, in fact, many of them are quite average with some very strong relative skills(much like other children). The very thing that impacts their success, socializalization, is the major thing that impacts their success.
Call it whatever you want, it is still autism.

The point I'm trying to make about misdiagnosis is that the term "mild autism" with reference to Asperger's Syndrome is used very frequently already. If you are a parent of a child with Asperger's you know that often people look upon the difficulty with social behavior in children with "mild autism" or Asperger's Syndrome as a "discipline problem", especially among teachers and those who are not aware of the problem. I just hope that when doctors make their diagnosis' they treat every child as a unique individual and take into account that every case of Autism is as unique as the child who has it. One size does not fit all!

Fixing the way diagnosis is done would've been more useful.
Yes there are some children who are labeled autistic and then grow up and are intelligent and successful BUT maybe these children were diagnosed wrong and should've been called Asperger's.
The most severe ASD cases compare to the most mild like apples and oranges. On the one end some never speak, never are toilet-trained, and spend their entire lives in institutions. On the other end some are not only intelligent and successful but even achieve social success and are even appreciated by their friends for their weirdness.
Take a brief description of the mildest and most severe cases of spectrum disorders, mix and match, and present them to aliens the aliens would never pair up the two ends of "autism". They might even be puzzled that the milder one is part of a disorder at all.
It's nonsensicle to call them the same disorder. Instead better guidelines about differentiating between Asperger's and Autism should be in order maybe with an intermediate diagnosis with its own name for cases that start as "autism" that turn into "asperger's".

asperger's syndrome is a form of autism
many autistics are retarded
but those with high-functioning autism and asperger's syndrome are NOT retarded
thus, the confusion

According to the current DSM, asperger's is a form of Pervasive Developmental Disorder (PDD) and it is a diagnosis under that category. That is where the confusion is, when people say asperger's is a form of autism. Does that mean asperger's is a form of Retts too? Or childhood disintegrative disorder? Would it then be fair to say autism is a form of asperger's? There's also no such diagnosis as high-functioning autism. That is a descriptive term only, mainly used by schools (I think they invented the term actually; they tell you this just before they deny services). Mental retardation is a measure of IQ with standardized tests. Many with asperger's and autism do poorly on tests, so they would rate a low IQ but those tests would never depict the true intelligence of those with these disabilities. Behaviors also do not depict MR or IQ.
